***Official Final Fantasy XIV Thead***

It will never compeat with wow as the only thing common is the fact its MMO, i have a hatred for WOW after playing from the start and building my toon up over the months and years, i can reactive my account and be in top gear within weeks(which i have done both expantions). FF will never be like that they want to sign those devorce papers and quit your job to get the gear ;) for that very reason people wont buy it some people just want best gear for Nothing.
And that coming from someone who works 50+hrs a week and has family and kids to juggle.

Thing is SE had an opportunity to bring a very polished product out but they have learnt nothing from their time with FFXI. There are things in game that are made counter intuitive for no apparent reason other than to make it different.
We're not asking for it to be a walk in the park just that things could have been more refined and could have taken a leaf out of their improvements in FFXI. yet they almost went back to square 1 with FFXIV.

Ah i see what you mean, and you have a valid point mate, I have no idea what it takes to make a game like this so maybe they just focused on getting a stable mmo out there and lets be honest its stable with no stupid waits and no major unplayable lagg. Ill give it time it far from the worst but defo ff fan focused :)

FFXIV will have it's market share but it's no way ready to compete with the likes of WoW in it's current state. (and i don't mean server lag/instability).
To capture the mass market it needs a very big overhaul, which frankly isn't gonna happen. This will appeal to a niche market and obviously, console users but thats about it imo. We'll all still be playing it mind :p

This.

Great game, I absoloutly love it but it will never be a big Market contender.

To be honest think I will prefer the game being like this especially after seeing what wow has turned into thanks to it wanting to pander to the masses and maximise their profits.

If it stays a niche game which (to me) is fun and not a complete cake walk I would be happy to enjoy it and play what content I can. I just want to enjoy it and despite it's sometimes frustrating flaws I think I may have found the perfect mmo for me.

But we'll see longer term :p

I think we are all enjoying it at the moment despite some issues.
I kind of see the PC release as FFXIV's proper open beta where everything will be fixed for when the Console ports come out. we'll also magically see an AH appear then too :p

Anyone got an crafting info that seems to work? To do with the flashing colours on synthesis and all that jazz, Everything Ive read is conflicting at the moment, Dont want to keep wasting mats failing stuff!

Having followed the thread avidly in the weeks running up to release, I have to agree with Bunny on this one. Claims that so much content was being held back, that the beta was a year out of date, were just wildly optimistic.

I'm not terribly surprised to see posts start to tricke in along the lines of "what else is there to do?" The signs were pretty blatant for anyone not blinded by the hype machine.

Anyone who believes such claims is extremely naive. I'm surprised it keeps working with each new MMO release...

Here is a research paper that looks at the fundamental question of why we play games. Its conclusion identifies 4 key areas that induce an enjoyable gaming experience.

analysis of best selling games such as
Bejeweled, Halo, Grand Theft Auto (GTA), EverQuest, and Mario Kart Double Dash reveals
that these games create emotion in at least three of the Four Keys.
These are summarised as:
Quote:
Hard Fun - Emotions from Meaningful Challenges, Strategies, and Puzzles
Easy Fun - Grab Attention with Ambiguity, Incompleteness, and Detail
Altered States - Generate Emotion with Perception, Thought, Behavior, and Other People
The People Factor - Create Opportunities for Player Competition, Cooperation, Performance, and Spectacle.

I don't even understand this.

Hard fun: yup, sometimes a challenge (defined by how easy it is to fail) is fun. but nobody wants non-stop challenge. Self-evident. No cookie for him so far.

Easy fun? I have no idea what the heck he's talking about. "Grab attention with ambiguity"... What? Incompleteness? What good is an incomplete anything? Definitely no cookies here.

Altered states? Does this mean playing when drunk/ high? Oh wait, he says "perception, thought, behaviour and other people". Well... er... What? Geez, louise, this is completely meaningless. Those terms are so ambiguous, and good design isn't ambiguous about anything.

The People Factor: 100% the key thing you have to think about when designing an MMO. Should be more important than anything esle. EVERYTHING should be designed with an eye to "how will this affect player interactions?" Should be self-evident, however.

Anyway, I'm sure you meant to sound all scholarly by linking to a "research paper". Shame it's mostly a load of crap, tho.

I always go white normal, yellow the longest one and red the quick synth. Generally tends to work but it also depends on how hard the recipe is foryour level if things come off.

Least that's what I have found :p

Really, really hope they release an ingame recipe book. Even if they locate only in guild houses or something like that but I still find it daft to have to trawl websites for recipes

Search ffxiv and lionhearts on google should bring up their webbie.

It says this:

"The Linkshell 'Lionhearts' has been made and current exists as 3 people in Gridania. If you need inviting to the Linkshell then send a tell to:
Terracus Partisian (so that's /t Terracus Partisian)
Angel Lionheart
Dresfab Ayto
Chilli Vanir
Pretan Draco"

Gridania? Wrong server

Aha, After a few crafting Leves last night, Seem to have got something that works for me anyway.

If its White or Gold, I tend to just use standard, Until its almost complete, then use Bold I think it was to try and up the quality, if it fails too much back to standard to get it finished.

And Wait everyturn its Red, Flashing, or has Sparks.

Yeah right:
1. Join a guild that has cleared all content.
2. Get an easy ride through all the raids and get free epics as everyone is geared already.
3. Come to OcUK forum and troll how easy the game is.

Ignore that. During beta they were on grindinia they re-rolled trabia live but for some reason it's not updated on the webbie.

I am getting slightly frustrated with this game now.

I am by no means a hardcore player, but all I have been able to do today is grind mobs/recipes because of the quest limits. I tried picking up a different class but because of having completed quests for other classes I can't do anything else. Like many people I work all week and have free time at the weekends, it frustrates me that during the 2 days off I have a week I can't spend more than a couple of hours progressing my character.

The recipe system is slightly mental in itself, there needs to be some method of looking at what you have learned in game rather than having to keep coming out and googling everything.

The game world seems very empty despite the number of people playing. Because the game is so laggy and slow I hardly ever seem to see other characters loading even though I know they are there, plus because everyone is speaking in different languages it cuts the number of people you can actually understand on the server to very low levels.

The game is not user friendly in the slightest. I undertook a quest where I was told a location was marked on my map, I opened my map to find nothing. I spent time searching my map and scratching my head. I eventually worked out that I had to press a map button in the journal, which told me where to go. This didn't update in my main map so everytime I wanted to check the location I had to keep going through the painfully slow journal.

The targetting system in this game is awful, I am playing with a controller because the mouse/keyboard combo doesn't work properly. When I fight a group of monsters and the first one dies it doesn't select the next one, it selects my character (why??).

I also get a lot of mob resets (similar to what happened in WoW when you experience lag), its a bit confusing to half kill something and then have it run to a preset position and regen health very quickly. Also simple things like doors taking a minute to open (especially in the Ul'dah adventurers guild) are driving me round the bend. Considering that synthesis and harvesting are big parts of the levelling procedure the massively lag ridden ui for these activities hugely slows the game down (and makes me want to give up).

The game is not stable - I have had a few appcrash issues as well as 'failure to find directx device' crashes, when this happens you auto fail your quest and can't attempt it again for 36 hours. This is a pretty big bugbear for a game that isn't stable and already restricts how many quests you can do.

In all honesty I have played the game for perhaps 5-6 hrs and feel that with an unrestricted number of quests, user friendly interface and a completely responsive server (i.e. if I were playing WoW) I could have done the same thing in a maximum of 2 hours. Personally I don't find this type of progression restriction fun or interesting.

This game feels like it needs a massive update applied to it before it will become any fun at all, and I suspect a lot of the issues around responsiveness relate to the servers all being located in Japan. At this point I don't expect I will renew my subscription after the first month.
