***Official Final Fantasy XIV Thead***

Yeah that was my bad! I was just trying the 2 dodo leves haha so I picked some different ones last night and i'm all good now!

Still wish i could find a better weapon than my starting gladius though as im fast approaching lvl 20 physical :(

What you need is a Brass Gladius. Make your way to Ul'dar with your 67,000 gil and buy it. Alternatively, take a look through the market wards, the game is old enough for the crafters to have made something nice for you.

Remember, you can equip any equipment, you don't have to be the level listed, it is an 'Optimal Rank' not a 'Minimum Rank' and anything is probably better than the weathered pos you are wielding.

My lancer character is rank 16 but wearing a nice set of rank 27 armour and will grow into it. She looks very glittery in it, the monsters should be able to see me coming from a large distance :D

I just bought myself a bronze helm, looks like I have a kattle on my head but boy do I look mean :p

So what are peoples opinions of the game now they are actually seeing it for what it is?

I'm potentially really interested in the game, I wasn't put off by the controls that much, and now there is a hardware mouse i'm hoping it won't be an issue. I liked the look of the combat, the world looked stunning as well and I'm not a hugely active player so I'm not too worried about the limit on leves. What I really want to know about though is actual content, is it just a solo grind, or are there meaningful group quests, are people getting close to the max level yet? Is the crafting any good? And really what else is there to do other than grind mobs? I'd really be interested in the endgame as I've heard no mention of it anywhere.

Doing this on my iPhone so excuse the errors.

My personal opinion is that the game is great, it has potential to be fantastic but it certainly does need some work. A brief run over your points;

crafting - unique system and personally not seen another mmo try something like this (though one I have never played may have) it's engaging and plays a lot like a mini game with some very worthwhile rewards. It can however be very frustrating as the interface to getting into the craft system isn't exactly speedy and the lack of an ingame recipe book is plain frustrating. I enjoy it but it still does my head in at times and I wouldn't be surprised if it put some people off crafting at all.

Interface - still needs work. It's not even the tiniest bit as bad as sone of the drama queens make out but it certainly isn't as easy and hassle free as wows. Needs tweaked but not game breaking.

Mouse/keyboard - again not game breakingly bad but still frustrating at tines. Again it's something that needs tweaked.

Combat - I have no issues with it. Others do. I think this would be a personal prefernce choice. It's a lot more engaging than the bog standard mmo and if targetting is looked at (no more self targetting grrr) it would be brilliant.

Solo/group - Game is soloable at least as far as I have played (15) but it's not as fun. The game actively encourages partying. Difficulty, enjoyability, levelling speed are positively benefitted if you group. Many players still suffer from wowitis though and seem to only want to solo grind so picking up random parties can be difficult. Find the right linkshell or pack of mates and you are set.

Leve CDs - this seems to be the biggest bugbear. Does not bother me so much as I work away and can't play much but the main ones complaining are those who want to power level to the top. Then probably sit there and whine about how quickly they got through the game. Personally I think a 24 hour leve cd would be best for all (imagine this will happen as it's been brought up a lot and so far SE have listened to the players) but you are only personally limited to 8. Group with others and you can get the bonus rewards from completing their leves as well as the xp buff. Basically SE promoting party play again.

Content - i have had no issue with this. Others scream "no content" yet have no evidence to back this up. The gane unfolds nicely with you being able to pursue multiple classes whilst completing leves as well as having the impressive main story unfold along side this. Then at 20 the game opens up more with access to faction and guild reps. I think the lack of content debate is do far all smoke. But at higher levels this will become more apparent.

Levelling - well paced. Certainly not too fast and I have yet to feel like the game is purposefully holding me back. Not sure if anyone has capped out yet but there will probably be someone somewhere who has.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask. :)

personal opinion is great game and more than playable and enjoyable in it's current format. However it does need done serious tweaking but when this happens the game will be great. It's a good game and a challenging game which is nice change in the current mmo market. They have tried to back in time to old school mmo's but rather than keep the best of both they have fulltly reverted. More than expect the tweaks to be ironed out though as SE have durprised me with their proactive response to player suggestions.

Buy it and enjoy would be my advice, however others would disagree I am sure :p

you must be one chilled out dude mate, the mrs just came up to see why i just smashed my razor mouse into about 40 bits. Has the worst menu UI in the history of any MMO even the FFXI was better then the garbage they have given. Defo game breaking for me no chance i can play a game 3hrs a day in that menu state. Tend to agree on your othere points mind but i guess it depends what you expected. As a massive FF fan and 5 years on FFXI i can only feel...well empty seems like they went backward was expecting to be blown away but i have to force myself to play to give a proper chance. Each to their own i dont force my views on any one i just hope i can save someone teh £25 for now :)

I've been called horizontal before :p

I agree the ui is frustrating and it annoys the heck out of me I think it's just that I'm enjoying the rest of the game enough for it not to put me off.

As you said though, each to their own, certainly until they.sort out the issues it will be like marmite (which I hate :p)

I'll give you me opinion. Sort answer: the game is superb and I am having huge fun playing it.

I will agree the game isn't perfect, but the combat is good, the crafting system is excellent and the visuals are stunning. I can't comment on the story yet, I have get a little way into it but I need to see more.

I an quite upset the cooldown on the leves was reduced from 48 hours to 36 as I am finding so much to do I am not getting chance to do them all. 48 hours where we get 2 evenings to do them would be better, currently we get 2 evenings every other set.

Grouping for combat is still odd. I have been convinced for some time the experience you get for killing things is bugged, you can kill 2 identical monsters one after the other and get 200+ rank points for one and none for the other. Grouping is possible and the linkshell I am in is very active in grouping to complete leves. Last night we were trying to do the level 20 behest near Gridania, although it didn't go well. if you can find a good group of people then the game is very playable.

I don't think anyone is near the max level yet, I know no one in my linkshell is. I heard rumours that people had got classes into the mid 30's a while back although I suspect they has been exploiting an experience bug for Thurmatages.

As for the endgame, you know as much as anyone outside SE :D. I am not convinced it is in the game yet, and even if it is nothing has been said about it yet.

My main complaint is it can get very laggy if there is a lot of people on the server, during the Japanese prime time there can be over 3,000 on the server and the wait for things to happen can get noticeable. During our evenings it is better, fewer people and there is less of a wait. It gets so bad at points that a number of members of the Linkshell have taken to crafting in the market wards to alleviate the problem.

The main thing that worries me about getting this is hitting a grouping brickwall like I did with FFXI. While I generally find myself a guild in mmos, I hated being absolutely forced to group to progress, especially when half the server doesn't speak your language.

Is is really more solo friendly, or am I likely to hit the same brick wall if I want to just log on an advance a few bars by myself?

Up to 15 it is completely soloable. After that im not sure.

Andrew what server you on?

SE have made fairly clear regarding solo content, they want a MMO that forces group play 1-15 is your solo time and learning curve. ill bet any money at lvl 35+ you wont be able to anything but craft solo much like ffxi before all the patching

Just got this game and initial impressions are mixed. Initial negative points for me have been:

Account signup process was a bit of a pain, nothing as bad as playonline, but they still managed to complicate it.

Graphics seem weird, like everything is smeared in vaseline. I'm running at 1920x1200 and it feels like a game where everything is 800x600 but has been stretched to fit to 1920x1200, the font seems especially blurry. Could be my system, or driver I guess, but I have a feeling it is the game, it can look lovely in places but something is just not quite right with the look of the game.

Seems like there is almost no tutorial or guidance provided in the game, the very first quest had me going to a place to 'lay hands' upon this crystal thing, I get there and have no idea what to do, I'm double clicking, trying to tab target it etc, turns out you have to open the game menu to interact with it!

I'm even stuck now on my first crafting quest, it is telling me to use the 'Lay of the land' ability and I cannot find this ability anywhere and have no clue as to what to do. Chat seems almost non existant other than people trying to sell things, I've tried asking for help and only once been given an answer. I'm all for hardcore, but they should at least give a new player a fighting chance and explain the basics.

The general interface just feels really bad, nothing seems intuitive, the controls feel awkward. And the worst thing is that alt+tab crashes the game, and due to the lack of any help ingame, I'd like to alt+tab quite often to google for help. I've resorted to using my iphone to browse for assistance, lol.

Yet strangely I'm quite enjoying what I've played so far. Certainly a game with potential imho.

I think the lay of the land ability is when it shows you where the mobs are on the minimap.

It gives you the option to use it after you accept the quest.

Thats the thing, I've accepted the quest, the countdown timer is running and I've gone through all my abilities, even changed the filter for each of the other professions and nowhere does it list a 'lay of the land' ability

The strange thing is that there is already an area highlighted on my map anyway and when I go there I can see these sparkly things, but I can't seem to interact with them. But then I don't even have a mining implement in my inventory so maybe I need to buy one first and equip that or something

I definately need to find a 'Final Fantasy XiV guide for Noobs who never played the beta and are a bit thick'.

Yeah if it's a mining quest you need to get a pick from the market area.

Only played the beta so not really an expert though!

Also you don't have to actually initiate the lay of the land thing, it does it for you which is why you can see the marked areas on your map.

Hi 24 conjurer, 15 Pug, 10 Thaumaturge, Cooking 18, Fishing 14

Sadly have given the game some time but just not getting on with it at all. Hate the targeting system and casting is just a pain in the ****!

I really enjoyed FFXI and felt I got more sucked into it, be it the first time running to Jeuno, the chocobo quests or even the subjob quests. Where as with FFXIV for me it just feels like it's going no where. I hate the fact that the creatures to kill are all just plain and boring.

Maybe I will come back to it one day in the future, but for now I will play the remainder of the free month and give it a rest.

Having problems with the graphics frequently locking up on my main machine (actually the graphics don't lock up, everyone around me is moving, I can rotate my character on the spot, but I can't move or use menu commands). It was running fine and never locking up with a 4890 in it. Problem is only with a new GTX470.

Any help/advice please ?

Same i logged today and thought this really poor, account ended hope the LS does well though peeps

I am really, really trying to enjoy this game, because I am a huge fan of Final Fantasy and MMORPGS - especially Final Fantasy XI; however, I am also really, really becoming very irritated with Square Enix. How on God's Earth did they think it was O.K. to implement such archaic systems into the game?

Sorry about grammar/spelling I am tired lol.

  • Account Management - HAHAHA HAHA HAH HAH HAHAHAHA HAHAH. It's so bad it just took me 7 minutes to find where I log in. It also took an extraordinary amount of time to register my account in the first place. They don't even use PlayOnline anymore and they still managed to make it so ****. Why not just have an account management page like WoW's rofl it's so simple and 12 million people seem to be happy with it.
  • Market Wards - WHAT?! Ok, I actually liked Everquest 1's take on this idea: The Bazaar. FFXIV has simply made this convoluted, and it really isn't necessary. Why is there no option to search through currently sold items? Why do I need to reselect retainers and hit browse to again, and again (and again) to find an item (when I don't even know what I am looking for anyway).
  • Loot - Sigh. Ok I understand the idea for the loot system, because I'm having to admit that the PC release of FFXIV is just a way for you to make the perect PS3 release, but COME ON. It's so god damn annoying when soloing to have to jump to the inventory screen and distribute items to your bag. Especially when you have to select the loot, move the cursor to distribute, move the cursor to bag, and then do it again, and again for each item!
  • Leves - Lmfao. People moaned about the patch in WoW that allowed people to teleport directly to instances. Well this just takes the ****. Am I right in saying that ALL there is to do in this game is stand around a crystal starting leves, running to a location and completing it and teleporting back with your group? Really? Are there no instances/raids/dungeons or actual quests with NPCs and Storylines? The whole progression system feels like reading from a Children's Fairytale Picture Book.
  • Gathering - Such a stupid way of doing it. It's so bland. A whole class to GATHER? Am I missing something?
  • Classes - FFXI has amazing Jobs, but FFXIVs seems....well.... a bit boring. I know there is supposed to be a way to tailor your own character, but seriously, releasing the game saying there are loads of classes when really theres only a lot because you've separated crafters and gatherers into individual classes is annoying. The actual combat classes seem too similar as well.
  • Pet Class? - No pet Class? Lol. Forgivable, but Lol.
  • Battle System - Basically you have to use Macros. It's really starting to GRIND MY GEARS how annoying it is so have to keep pressing my main attack fifty times in a row and hearing the interface sound go Bleep, Bleep, Bleep, Bleep.
  • GOD DAMN MACROS - They are necessary, but nowhere in the game does it tell you the commands or how to make them properly. And considering you can't frigging alt and tab to check it's even worse!
  • FullScreen Alt Tab - You can't do it. Don't tell me to use AutoHotkey, or Windower, or ShiftWindow, because I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO. And why the hell do Square Enix send cease and desist orders to people trying to make programs allowing you to alt tab. FFS Square Enix, you let people run in Windowed Mode, but you say allowing people to Alt Tab would give people an unfair advantage? Are you idiots? They can just run windowed mode anyway!
  • Combat Animations and Actual Inflicted Damage unsynced. Come on, it's the year 2010. At least take THAT from WoW.
  • Community - Feels QUIET. The chat options suck. The Chat Window Sucks. No chat bubbles (ok not necessary but something indicating someone is speaking would be better. No general chat. Even everquest's social functions surpass this. By the way, I LOVE EVERQUEST. Everything about communicating in this game just feels clumsy.
  • Graphics - The graphics are amazing! The art is amazing! But it just doesn't feel good. Personal taste I guess, but it's missing something. WoW has **** graphics, but looks AWESOME! Do you understand what I mean?
  • Numerous other things I hate, which I hate Square Enix for making me Hate, because I want to love the game. There's only one Final Fantasy, and they've ruined this one for me - unless they make some changes in the coming months(unlikely) or I buy it on the PS3.

I hope it gets better, but I am having my doubts. There are so many things I hate that would have to be fundamentally changed, if not involving a complete remake :/ I want to play, but every hour I put into it the more I realise it's not a proper mmorpg in my own eyes. Don't know how to explain what I mean, but everything feels like a hindrance. I know they wanted to make a game similar to the original mmorpgs, but they completely overshot/missed it.

Will continue to play for the remainder of trial and see what happens. Maybe if I get a Linkshell it will get better.
