***** Official Football Manager 13 Thread *****

He has such a massive PA rating on this one, in my save in 2030 he was just amazing, was the principle reason Blackburn became a force in England (and since he has left why they have dropped massively again).

Tried to sign him on a free to CAFC but he chose to retire instead. :(

I've noticed the game has been horrendously unstable recently, Laptop and PC.
But I don't recall an update lol.

I've started getting a few more crashes again (large database well into the future), did a reinstall and just remember to save a little more often/not leave it running all day seems to help.

He's still at Derby on £37k per week in mine and he doesn't look anything special (now 2024, he's aged 28). Played plenty of games each season too, so it's not like he's been stuck in the reserves.

Yeah PA isn't a guarantee their CA (current ability) will match up, so sometimes he'll be amazing and sometimes he'll just be alright, depends a bit on training facilities, coaching, the team he plays in and so on (so sitting at Derby for 10-15 years in the champ has sort of killed off his ambition to be as amazing as in my save). It's interesting because sometimes it's human player interaction that makes them amazing and sometimes it's just a bit of luck/random events in FM engine.

Losing about 5 games in a row now on my Anderlecht game (FM12 though)...Need some tips to stop the rot, tried moving from my attacking formation to a more solid 4-5-1 but i've lost 2 1-0's in a row using that?

Do a team meeting in FM12, tell them you think a lot more can come from the team, that tends to inspire them.

Awww no!!! What year are you in? Have you tried going back as far into the save as possible, making a separate file/verifying the game content or even making the save uncompressed for a bit?

Ah that could be the cause then, steam will get the right files to redownload and hopefully it'll fix it.

No idea why files become corrupt but I have had to do it a few times over this FM when things go wrong.

Also for creating a new save of the save I mean going to save as and just renaming the file instead of over writing it, I tend to do it once ever season or two in the last few FM's just to keep a track of my progress/not loose much to a corrupt save file.

Yeah, it's a sensible way of being uber careful. There is nothing worse (in relative terms!) than losing a legendary save. I still fondly remember saves going back into the 90's!? Millwall, Wolves, Nottingham Forest... ah :)

Has the problem sorted itself out Phil?

I must have been massively kidding myself when I tried to quit cold turkey last week. I managed about a day and a half of professional/grown up productiveness before my excellent start to the 35/36 season started creeping its way back into my thoughts. Turns out I was right though... comfortably top of the league with Crewe in my third season in the EPL with six games to go, my summer transfers have worked a charm and I've got a first leg lead against Bayern in the QF of the CL, having beaten Barcelona.

I had to have a proper chat with my girlfriend last night... It's very difficult trying to explain why I'm not doing anything worthwhile whilst she get's up every morning, goes to work and leaves me fast asleep in bed. My excuse of "Technically I'm still in my non-compete period and I've still got all my savings" didn't go down too well :D

Does anyone ever win penalty shoot outs? After losing yet another (despite Liverpool missing their first two penalties), I've gone back through my entire history this save to have a look at my team's track records. Won 3 Lost 12

Haha! I am amazed you're back in already! :p

Been breaking the new girlfriend into how much FM gets played and what happens with real life football as well... She doesn't need to see me saturday afternoon or wonder at the importance of Cafc being top of league 2. At least you've gotten the 35/36 season is underway! Can't go this far without seeing it way to far into the future...

How can you have never won penalty shoot outs though?? Do you not sign enough players with composure? I think I have won about 60% of penalty shoot outs including a champions league final one...

It worked!! Amazed to be honest but the validation has worked. It has let me continue my game.

Hurray!!!

surprised no ones mentioned the appearance of FM14 on the sigames site :)

Should really get round to making the FM14 thread for it so not to clutter this one, just too early to get excited about 14 when there's plenty of fun to have with 13 :D

French Hero - Check

JoeBorg_NewsInbox_zps488cd005.png

Took me 3 seasons.

1st season I finished 2nd in the National.

2nd season I did quite badly until the last 2/3 games, which propelled me from 17th to 12th/13th.

3rd season I got 3 good loan players, and I good player on a free. Things immediately started well. I arrived in the Semi Final of one of the cups (lost to European Champions, PSG) and I am currently in the quater final of the other cup. I am 2nd in the league 1 point off Monaco. There are some 7 or 8 games left.

Really cba finishing the league, although I was already getting quite a few good players on a free.

Next up is Scottish or Brazilian Hero.

Nice one! Please do Scotland without Rangers... ;) Brazil just looks mad/fun as the league is a bit full on with games

Well its March the 8th 2031 and CAFC HAVE WON THE LEAGUE!!!

League 2...

That's it won with 8 games in hand :D

Also got to the 5th round of the FA cup (4th round win over premier league watford on tv was a nice bonus) and I am in the final final of the JPT! Actually excited as the L2 and JPT wins are ones I didn't do last time I was at this level.

Going to aim to beat the in game l2 points record of 100 first then Plymouths real life 102 record...

Scored a new L2 points record of 106 and won the JPT :D

So pleased with my second cafc season and busy sorting out a good 3rd....

Arrrghhh injuries...... :(
i get so fed up with injuries in this game it just feels so unrealistic. Most of mine occur when the players are playing for their country - and there is bugger all I can do about it. At the moment, I have 8 injuries. Most are long term, and the worst part is that the long termers are my best players. My star striker has been out for 3 weeks. I've got a £40 million winger (who cost me £70m two seasons back) out for 6 months with a broken leg. I've got a £40m midfielder out for 3 months. A £35m defender out for 6 weeks.. and more besides.. It's a nightmare. There is also a good chance some of these guys will lose form over the term of their injury. I'm now left fielding 18 year olds.

Weirdly season/career ending injuries happen a fair bit more in this FM than previous ones, it's really frustrating but I think they have just coded more players to have B and C injury proneness ratings, sort of like in real life there are very few world class players that are then also bullet proof....

Just annoying in FM they sort of all coincide a bit more

Just wondering what tactics people are using? i have a good tactic iv used for big teams but when im in the prem with a small team i struggle a lot even after investing in decent players!

In game there are 3 big ones that work.

Classic 4-4-2

My 4-1-2-2-1 (game says its 4-3-3 but it has a compact 3 in midfield, 2 attacking wingers and a lone striker)

or 3-5-2 weirdly.

Lots of variations work, including amusingly a lot of sweeper based formations but they are the 3 the game managers use a lot (there is a notable mention for 4-2-3-1 but that only works with a quality playmaker and attacking formation)

For the most part its all about getting the right players in for the formations you want to play more than anything else.

Any top tips for someone new to the game, cant get the hang of it at all lol

There's a couple of ingame tutorials to follow that will be worth it if you're not sure what to do, also just throw your self into the main game, only way to learn really.

I can't wait for 2014 :D

*coughs* we have a FM2014 thread ;) (this is a tongue in cheek reminder of the spl style season split between the two games that happens every year)

Cafc are building me a statue :D

Won the JPT again and L1 much to my surprise!

Le Champ is going to be a nightmare...

Just about to play Chelsea away in 2019 at the Zola Stadium. Only just noticed this. :)

Yeah when they move to a new stadium the game picks a legend from the information screen and names it after them, Burton named one after me in FM12  Bishops Stortford will do the same in this game eventually...

Haha! That's awesome, might have to dig about for the screen shot of my Burton Albion one...

I wish there was a tacky theme hospital style unveiling of my statue outside of the Vally in this one though

I got to 2035 as QPR and I was winning a lot of stuff every season including the CL. It wasn't boring at all BUT the problem I had was my team was so good that I couldn't find new talent. It got to a point that I would be lucky if I could find a single youth player to add to my list every season. 2.5 stars was the equivalent of a leading premiership player, so you can imagine finding 4 or 5 star potential youth was near to impossible. But I've also an issue with leagues/database sizes and I still don't really know how it all works. ie does having the minimum leagues BUT the largest database mean you still get access to all the players or not? It's very confusing.

Anyway, I put that save to one side and restarted in 2012 as unemployed, with sunday league experience. I am now managing a Blue Bet Premiership team after having made promotion. But the games are really tough. Every one is a challenge. At least there are LOADS of 5 star players available :D

You do realise the 5 star thing is relative to your position in the game?? So when you are a top top team finding proper talent is impossible because everyone in your team is so good to start with? So being a 5 star player isn't a standard label, just a reflection of potential/actual ability compared to the rest of your team....

On the CAFC front I came second in the champ after drawing the last 5 games and screaming at the team in a team meeting for just not playing towards the end of the season. Then again 4 back to backs with 2 league wins and 2 jpt's is still great going :)

Who are you managing now??

The team talk bugs me a bit but it seems essential to get the right sort of results (or just scream at everyone).

Size of stadium isn't too much of a problem in L2, when Bishops Stortford got there it was ok with 2k and CAFC only got about 8k into their 24k stadium. When you get to L1/the champ you'll need a bigger one but hopefully will get to ground share, like when I had to play at Stadium MK for a season (record attendance for Bishops Stortford is still there 18k as the max for their stadium is only 16k)
