***** Official Football Manager 13 Thread *****

Proper LOL at that. Sums up the supposed *revolutionary* developments they manage to come up with every year, which if they sat down for more than 5 minutes, could have bottomed out 5 years ago and released in one version of the game. Its the same as all these "newly improved recipe" style adverts, its all flannel. If a new "feature" is so *fantastic* why didn't you think of it twelve months ago and put it in then.

Very excited about this. Hadn't played FM12 since I got burgled in May, but new laptop meant a new game with Bath City in anticipation for FM13.

I think the loan system they've had in place has been outdated for a few seasons. Players not playing regularly should welcome the opportunity to go out on loan, whether they be EPL youngster to a L1 team, or a L1 youth player into the Conference, I've felt that loaning a EPL youngster on £25,000 to a Championship club and expecting them to cover the entire wages is ridiculous!

Also, the caveat whereby the team avoids paying the loaned players' salary if he gets game time should also be included IMO.

As always, I'm eternally angry at how badly rated the players are at the team I support. I now find myself wanting us to be towards the top of the table IRL as it may bump up a few attributes in the game, rather than wanting me team to actually go up during the season proper... :p

Looks like the refs are actually going to get coloured kits at last :D

All good stuff in those videos, the absolute highlight for me - and I suspect many others - being the "export your team from your single-player game and use it in network matches" ability :)

Right I skipped the match engine 2 one because its just footage of the match engine, which was dull as sin!

Here's the next two though, director of football and new staff roles videos

Both sound sensible/logical updates to a frustrating staff role system (could never get what I wanted out of the youth team without basically doing it my self, which is a lot of work)

There's one facet of the game I sincerely hope they improve as it's been frustrating me for many a season - to the point whereby I consider the game a failure based on this one aspect :p

When you select only English leagues as playable, the English youth system produce far inferior players than other countries. For example, the quality of youngster generated in French, Italian, German and Spanish leagues is incredibly high whereas I find English regens to be Ok at best. This means that when you're ten seasons into the game it's almost impossible to have a squad of players which include decent enough English individuals (or trained at nation).

Also makes managing the England team in the future incredibly difficult.

It's happened constantly with each release for a number of years and I find it overwhelmingly annoying - particularly when managing at lower league level!

England are on par with the rest of the nations for me. Brazil and France are the best. Italy produce crap players but they do well.

Also, buy when they are <=18 and they will be home grown.

English youngsters are traditionally overrated :p

Actually I have found England produce a lot of world class young players, but because there are so many English teams its a pain to bring them all together...

Also today's blog

I would love to see the stats on how many relationships/marriages break down due to this game :)

Still married....but I do have a snapped in half FM 2010 disc to show for my addiction :D

(she still let me play 2011 and 2012 though  )

Really? I rarely find this - maybe it's to do with how my database and playable leagues are setup?

I find that you can trawl through the peripheral leagues in South America, Central and Eastern Europe and other regions, and find plenty of young regens with (particularly technical) attributes in the high teens, whereas the amount of English regens with such features is severely lacking.

For example, after the first season I spent a good twenty minutes searching through all of the Agentinian league and must have picked out 10-15 regens with excellent, if not amazing, current and potential ability - whereas the amount of such English players is comparatively unsubstantial.

Also, I have an issue with the amount of decent regens that come of of Leagues 1 and 2. The average team in those leagues may get one good regen ever 3 seasons maybe? And hardly any of these go on to achieve much in the game - perhaps the odd one - and I think this lacks realism.

If you look at the current England squad, nine of the current players began their careers with clubs outside of the Premier League, with six more beginning their careers with teams recently promoted (QPR, Southampton, West Ham, etc.).

I think this is a complete and fundemental misunderstanding by FM as to the manner in which players move around and thusly improve. Granted, 10 seasons into an FM game there will be a few players in the England squad that began careers outside of EPL clubs, but in my opinion it's comparatively few compared to the real life England squad.

But meh, I still play it addictively, and have recently had to let the new girlfriend of 7 months aware of my playing habbits. We're in the stage where she thinks it's "silly but cute" that I play it, and I can get away with sending jokey emails like this one yesterday:

Slept well thanks, but did go to bed at 1am after a frustrating close-season with Bath City as I prepare to go into League One for the first time (following my promotion last season). I’m struggling a bit with a couple of factors, mainly the lack of decent free transfers willing to come to the club (as we’re so small) but also the lack of Premier League teams letting their youngsters go at the end of each season. Obviously I don’t have a transfer budget, but I seem to be well in the salary structure laid out by the directors… I even have a transfer budget this season. Now I’m just having a think who to make Captain and Vice-Captain for the season, and also to settle on either playing a 4-4-2 formation or going for 4-2-2-2. What do you think?

Little does she know that I'm actually being serious... :D

Well there is a flaw in the way it creates newgens in that each nation has a characteristic of players, so England tends to produce physical players who are worse on the ball when other nations produce more tech players...

But on most of my decent saves in the future new gens in 12 tend to come out fairly balanced... Oh and most big England players at one point or enough aren't in the big English teams :p (most tend to get hoovered up by the big guns after a few years, thought that was reflected fairly well)

Good luck with the girlfriend :P Most have stared and gotten very very confused by FM enjoyment (well addiction) :D

Here's todays video blog for 13

Bam! And now comparison has big bold colours to compare players...

The actual interesting part is they are trying to get past the mystery staff rating stuff so you don't have to luck it in getting a decent back room staff setup sorted out.

Well today's blog and teaser is about transfers

Interested with this one as by the looks of things you can now shout at the game to develop how you want to play football!

*drumroll*

Deadline day actually becomes a minigame like moment in this one (if you want to do it)

Quite like the principle in this one just to panic sell the odd player on the last day...

Jim White is going to be all over that transfer dead line day feature. I expect him to save pre deadline day and just reload when it's over, repeat until the end of time.
