***Official Formula One 2011 Thread***

I've not bought a physical copy of a non-Steam game in ages so I've one question: do games usually still require you to have the disc in your drive while playing? Specifically did F1 2010 require the disc while playing? That Shopto deal is awesome but I really don't want to swap discs everytime I start the game, not in this day and age.

It's a good point. But when I installed Quake 3 and Quake 4 from discs many years ago, there's serial numbers you have to put in to verify it's genuine, but you don't need the discs after that, game just runs from the hard drive. Should be the same for F1.

Anything that's steam activated or bought through steam doesn't require a CD to play, in fact most PC games now don't require a disc since they've changed it to online authentication in DRM.

Wouldn't assume that to be the case, it's still very rare a disc based game works without a disc in the drive.

The last disc based Codemasters game I got (Dirt 2) certainly requires a disc to be in the machine. I see no reason F1 2011 would be any different.

Unless they use SecuROM, which F1 2010, as well as a few other of my most recent games, does. F1 2011 probably will, but hopefully it won't. You get that annoying "no disc inserted" message if you... don't have the disc in.

I expect so to knowing Codemasters but I do think it is a genuine question.

It will likely be swamped by the Codies fanboys before getting locked I would assume.

Just read this:

* There is a bug when cars cross the line closely. We had 2 people in 4th place at one point and no one in 5th. Ian mentioned that this happens when cars cross over the line very close. It was too processor intensive to have them continually update all the way round the track. Hopefully this wont result in weird finishes in MP.

Really?

Ok, I tried to post my impressions which I cant keep up with because of the migraine I had. I thought I would make a quick thread which shows the good things, and bad things that came out of our experience at CM yesturday.

(And it stops me rambling)

Negatives;

* AI dont seem to start on correct tyres when going from dry session to wet.

* Visual glitch in MP when going from dry quali to wet race. Drivers look like their on slicks at the start of the race, but by the first corner they switch over to the correct tyre. This is visual only, unlike the AI.

* Safety car 'lag'. This was confirmed by Ian that a fix has been applied already.

* Damage is improved and more fragile, but still know where near what we would like. (This is wholly down to FOM with licensing)

* Pit stops are ok, but we have lost control of putting the limiter on and off.

* Driving over the white line out of the pit doesn't incur a penalty.

* Visual glitching through wheel nut guns when driving out of your pit box and through another teams pit box. (Hard to explain)

* Too much ghosting for my liking. As soon as you spin you tend to ghost almost immediately.

* AI is not competitive enough when grouping together behind a safety car re-start.

POSITIVES:

* Handling is far superior

* Tyre compounds really work well this year. You have to look after your tyres.

* Kers and DRS are perfect for a game and work perfectly.

* AI is competitive and dont show huge slow down at corners. We couldnt try all tracks for time restrictions but personally I tried Australia which is fixed.

* Pit stops are working correctly now.

* AI are definitely effected by Tyre wear, Fuel, DRS, Kers, failures, mistakes.

* Tracks and cars look 100% better.

* Mechanics wear gloves when working with tyres. :)

* Cars look and feel grounded.

* Spectate mode works well and you can view any car and see when they use Kers and DRS.

* Marshalls wave flags and boards flash correct colours. Fully functional.

* Steering wheels look good, with no visual lag when changing gear, or audio lag.

* Drivers look at move their heads towards apex (T-Cam view). Small and nice touch.

* Audio sounds fantastic this year. would have been nice to have the aggressive blow-off sounds of the diffusers. The game overall is lovely to listen too.

* Race engineer is much more detailed, and keeps you up to date with many aspect of the race. There were no silly comments in any races I had.

* Despite a few niggles the safety cars works beautifully.

* Controller and wheel feels great, and both are competitive.

* The new fuel management system works brilliantly. This shows you fuel mixture, engine temp, tyre and engine wear and your position if you were to pit. Its probably one of the best features this year.

* 3d racing line is a nice touch. Works well but can sometimes obscure cars already taking the corner in front of you.

I will update this when people remind me from the community day.

Yes, there are some good positives, I just hope they iron out the negatives as a few of them could become very annoying.

May I ask why in the "Active Users" list at the bottom of the forum you have a + next to your name?
