Had a go on the multiplayer with 'Mr Fantastic'

rolleyes

, 20% full grid, Expert, at Catalunia cos i wanted to see that final chicane with the new suspension for myself (much better).
About 2 laps in, unseen by both of us one of the Mercedes cars flipped and was in the gravel trap at turn 5. About 2 laps later, at which point im sure it'd disappeared, out came the Safety car.
We were mid-pack, however i'd already pitted because the Fantastic one spun and kindly reversed it across the track into my path taking out my nose on lap 1.. So i was around 18th and looking to gain from everyone else pitting, MrF was about 12th, he pitted under SC along with a few others and before long i was into 5th for the restart (3 frontrunners pitted on the restart lap, despite deciding not to the previous 2 passes under SC).
Divebombed 2 of them into T1, and passed the leader a couple of corners later... or at least thats what i thought! Half way around the lap, Webber sets the fastest lap of the race!
The aussie sod had somehow never been picked up by the SC and he'd been driving around without being slowed down, and had given himself a nice 45sec lead.
This cant be possible under F1 rules, the SC picks up the leader, and i dont see how under any circumstances someone could evade the SC as the lead car in the race, while 20 odd cars queue behind the SC for 3 laps.
Something certainly wasnt right about that.
Also, the discussed '11 suspension', its quite easy to do this in career mode, 1/1/11/11 is just stupidly quick, you just have so much more grip your pretty much untouchable.
We started a co-op career off, 50% distance with everything realistic on Expert, and were driving as Force India as i wanted something that was mid-pack but could get us in the thick of things. The race first wasnt great, i managed 10th to pick up a point and was pulling in Webber in the closing laps. However my fastest lap was 0.3sec slower than Vettel, done 7 laps from the end on Primes (white), and MrF did 0.1sec on Options (yellow) about 5 from the end. That wasnt using 11/11 either, but a slightly reduced setting (which worked in F1 2010), and clearly we shouldnt be able to take the fight to teams like Mclaren, Red Bull and Ferrari.
We're both experienced racers, and F1 2010 i took WDC & WCC on expert in my first season as Lotus with default settings... F1 2011 is better in that respect, but no single setup or specific combo of settings should make any car stupidly competitive. The option may as well just be removed from the game because who in their right mind is going to say "i'll dial down this, i want to go slower". The only reason is for competitiveness and 95% of people arent interested in realism, but 'make me faster'.
I saw the thread on the codies site about this, and initial suggestions that its easy to mod the game to abuse grip levels, it proves nothing. Its a 5min job, fire the game up, do 3 laps with the abused settings, and then 10 with anything sensible, and im pretty sure you'll struggle to beat it.
Im pretty sure in our co-op game we'll just be running something that doesnt take the .... but gives us a reasonable chance. Its a shame that we have to come to our own agreement not to abuse a car setting because its badly coded.
