Official Gigabyte DS3 Owners Thread

Think I may have sussed it but I would like your input first.

My PSU has 2 sets of 4 round pin connectors that powers up the internal case fans and at the end of these leads is a small different connector - 1 called P7 the other P11.

Now when I had the board out and got it running I didn't have either connected but all the fans came on.

Now I had the P7 lead plugged into the SYS_Fan connection on the board as I assumed as the 4 pin connectors were attached to the case fans it made sense.

I have now tried it connected to the bare board and it didn't work, so I think I have sussed it.

Right I've put it back in thw case and connected a few bits - i get the error beep for no graphics/monitor so I know thats working (card not installed yet)

But I do have a strange thing happen - not sure if this a problem though.

When I turn the comp on it starts up for 1 second - turns off and then back on and stays on.

Seems strange that it turns off but for all I know it might be a safety measure.
(bare in mind hardly anything is installed yet)

Thanks for all your help.

thats normal mate ,something to do with fan speed etc setting in bios i think

I'm overall very pleased with this new rig but I had a couple of Q's I wanted to put to you guys

Has anyone tried removing the NB cooler and check the TIM? It's just that the cooler is bl00min' hot

My mobo and ram seem to run out of steam at the same time. I'm at 466*2 and I can only run my ram at 5,5,5,15 @ 933 on 2.2v. Shouldn't this stuff most likely run 4,4,4,12 at that speed. Don't seem to get much more by dropping the FSB and putting the ram on a 3 multi? Oh, and boy does it get hot too

I think I might get some extra cooling in there. Something over the NB (Zalman bracket perhaps) and probably the ram too. I could even Dremel and intake fan hole too as my case has none  I don't expect it to help the OC but there are worrying heat issues.

What mobo voltages are you guys running?

You only need to use a floppy like that if you are setting up RAID. Else, just boot off the Windows CD like normal to install.

The only things you need to do in the BIOS before installing Windows, would be to set the date/time and remove any components you don't need - i.e onboard audio, serial ports etc.

don't you have to install the SATA drivers on winstall in order to enable SATA-II advanced features like NCQ and 3gbps transfer rates. I forgot this and was quite gutted when I realised my drive was running in IDE mode. I'm sure the performance difference is only small but that's not what we're about is it? I'm not going to re install anyway, just annoyed with myself.

regarding my post on the previous page about my ds4 and geil 6400. can someone help me overclock my ram further please.

I have the same problem as you. Dissappointing performance with the GEIL RAM. It could just be a poor batch but I rather suspect it could just be a setting somewhere. Only problem is there are too many settings. I'm new to Intel after a long beak and don't know too much about ram. I don't want to go higher on voltages either as the CPU is easily the coolest thing in the case (48 loaded)

i did this yesterday actually :D
the die on the NB is a mirror finish, the tim is very sticky so it needs a twist to get it off and was a bugger to clean up.put some AS5 on there and drilled a 40 mm fan to the top
hasent lowered the temps by much really :(
idling @ 35 oC atm

So not too much point in refitting it really. I'll just put a Zalman fan bracket and 120mm over it and perhaps the RAM.

Guys with high FSB, can I ask you what Mobo and RAM settings you are using?

Thanks

Right up and running and so far so good.

Would just like to say a big Thank You to everyone that offered support and help.

Very much appreciated.

Just one small problem now - it appears as though my Windows activation code has expired so unless I can sort that out I will be unable to use my comp in 30 days.

Never heard about this before, do I need to buy a new activation key? - I wonder how people cope with this who format their Windows installation every few months.

Very strange and very annoying.

Again Many Thanks to everyone who helped.

Has anyone tried the F7 bios yet? Release notes only state support added for kentfield but you never know, there might be some magical stuff in there.

It also solves an annoying problem with X-fi cards.

With F6 bios my DS3 would loose my X-fi, resulting in software re-installs. F7 sorts it.

Ah! My DS4 STILL does that occasionally, had to take out and reseat the card, didn't need a driver reinstall though.

I had nothign but problems with ANY SoundCard in my DS3 at first.

I already had F6 BIOS, so saw no reason to update it.

The problem did sort itself out on its own however, and I really dont know how the hell it did it, but I have NOT upped my BIOS.

One thing that I will say however, and this is a real weird one...

I have a TV Card in the bottom slot and a SBLive24 in the middle slot and they work just fine now... If I take the TV Card out, or move the SBLive to any other slot, it stops working... I can get that maybe the SBLive needs to be in the middle PCI slot, but removing the TV Card? Now, thats a new one, but thats what I am having to do on mine?

Well weird.

I have a problem now.

Everything was working fine so I thought I would run 3DMark 06 - everything was fine until the snowy test and then it froze and stopped responding - I gave it about 10 mins and then restarted my comp, now it wont boot.

I get as far as the Windows screen with the blue bar and then when it changes to go into Windows it hangs with just a black screen and the Floppy drive light comes and stays on.

I haven't got a clue what to do now so does anyone have any idea's?

Many Thanks

Didn't get a chance to try.

I turned my comp off while I used a Laptop to post and when I came back to try it - it loaded up normal.

Thing is I had turned the comp off before and left it and it didn't work so now I'm really confused.

I'll try running 3DMark again and see what happens.
