**Official Gigabyte Z87X-OC Discussion Thread**

I'm planning on ordering one of these boards this week, can't decide on the following:

Whether the 4770K is worth the £75 more than the 4670K

Whether I can do much overclocking with a good air cooler (been looking at the akasa voodoo venom) or whether I should just buy a closed loop cooler like a h100i or x60 kraken

My case is a Corsair 540 so should be about as good as air cooling can get I'd have thought.

the k2 mount doom is a good air cooler,id be looking at the top/high end air coolers

as for the 4770k id pick that if you can afford it,otherwise the 4670k is a decent chip

Is the Akasa Voodoo Venom a high end cooler?

Thing is. The most CPU intensive apps I run are games and perhaps multiple clients of Eve if I get back on there.

If I could see a benefit in either of those circumstances then I could justify the extra £70. Man maths ;)

Not sure if this the right thread...but..

I'm ordering this board, with a 4770K - and I want a 16GB Kit to go with it (2 x 8GB), any advise?

I'm leaning toward corsair vengeance pro 2133Mhz - but is this optimal?

Thanks

Loads of good RAM to pick from with nice high speeds and decent timings,

So, Corsair is no go?

No they are ok but there are alternatives, look at the prices, look at the speeds and the CAS latency (9, 10, 11 etc, lower is better) and decide. Maybe having RAM that matches the boards black+orange is a factor to you? if not then the TEAM Frost 2400MHzCAS10 above is epic.

Also your cooling on the CPU maybe a factor as some of these RAM kits have huge heatspreaders which can cause interference issues.

Thanks - Going with a H105 - so shouldn't be a problem - and that RAM does look the ......

Not really fussed on the colour - as long as it works :-)

I've been putting up with some issues for a while now but they are finally starting to bother me again so I've started trying to figure out what the problem is again.

50% of the time when I boot the PC and log into Windows (8) it freezes a few seconds later. It doesn't unfreeze if left idle so I have to either hit the reset or power button.
I have seemingly random crashes where the main screen shows random patterns of colours (different every time) and the secondary screen just goes black.
Sometimes when waking from sleep mode the PC fails to properly wake up and I get nothing back on screen.
Once when entering sleep the screens went black as expected but then the fans all went to 100% in the PC.
Also after failing to boot the libraries (documents, videos, pictures and music) are getting corrupted requiring me to delete them and restore defaults, not happening every time.

I previously RMA'd one Z87X-OC due to errors similar to this but with a couple of others which made it unusable. I was told on the phone by an OCUK staff member (can't remember which one now) that there were compatibility issues between this board and the Corsair AX860i PSU which could cause the issues I was experiencing with the previous board but that it was strange for them to be happening with my Corsair AX860 PSU.

Anyone in here using this board with the Corsair AX860 PSU and having any similar problems?

I'm trying to rule out each piece of hardware but some things I can't rule out without spending money (board and PSU at least).
So far I have had memtest run fine for 6+ hours, SSD and Hard Disks tested fine with SeaTools, GPU tested fine in 3DMark and Video Memory stress test.

Bios settings are stock, currently on F7b but after posting this I'm going to try switching to F8a. All drivers are up to date.

At some point this week (had meant to do it at the weekend) I am planning to do a fresh install of Windows 8 on an 80GB HDD with my SSD and other HDDs removed to see if the issue still happens on a fresh install before any updates (pretty sure it was an issue when this was a fresh install though).

I am getting to the point where I am considering just going ahead and replacing parts but without knowing which to replace I'm likely to end up spending money that I don't need to spend.

Anyone able to offer any suggestions that may help me at least get closer to the probable cause?

This might sound random, but Core Temp (RC6) randomly freezes Win 8. It took me a while to work out what it was. If you have it, try Real Temp instead. :)

http://www.alcpu.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=2569

That could be part of my problem I guess, I have Core Temp RC6 running at start-up. I guess I'll get rid of that and have 1 less problem to deal with.
Thanks :)

Tried updating to F8a BIOS, wouldn't boot. Going to install F7 instead of F7b now.

Confirmation of Core Temp causing the freezing issue: Closed it then re-opened to edit the start up settings and my PC froze.

Edit: Now running F7 BIOS and removed Core Temp, wonder what issues will remain...

random coloured screen crashes are usually gpu

try setting power control slider in ccc to 20%

I'm fairly sure I tried that before sending my GPU away for RMA before (they couldn't find anything wrong with it so returned it). Upped it to 20% again anyway, hopefully that will help. Thanks :)

Thanks Stulid, Ordered the TEAM Frost.
