Official Home Gym Building Thread

The bar is a bit pricey but if you grabbed 4 20kg bumpers and a cheaper bar that could easily help maintain some muscle.

Edit:
Just do everything with an axle :p:D https://www.mirafit.co.uk/mirafit-5ft-axle-bar-black.html

That looks horrific :p

I just need a good/cheapish 20kg bar.

I do love the Origin stuff though.

I'm also unsure about working out on the patio, although its pretty solid and would be fine with rubber plates.

With bumpers and a mat, no issues. Overhead drops, probably not so good :D

Very tempted. Unsure how well it would survive outside though. What kind of mat would you suggest?

Personally I wouldn't drop that kind of money if it was outside. I'd be looking to get a barbell I can put inside and some bumpers. Urethane is pricey, although better quality.

Origin have some rubber tiles, you can probably order 2 of those for where the bars make contact with the floor.

I'd store all this indoors, then roll it out for a workout. Could add some squat stands too.

15 days lead time on these squat stands - https://www.bulldoggear.eu/collections/squat-racks/products/bssr-i-bulldog-series-squat-rack
Could again put these inside when not in use.

Not a bad shout. I guess by adding a bench the squat stands could be added for bench press?

Yup. I've found the trick to keeping things sensible is adding things gradually. You could wait a week and keep checking websites and find a cheaper bench and squat stands. If you're not that fussed about keeping price low, then pick what is available.

Yes, I think that is the solution. Start small and build up, eventually I'd love to not have to rush home from work for a squat rack and end up queuing constantly - it will also be a nightmare when the gyms reopen for a while. I'm not sure whether I'd miss the buzz of the gym though. Its finding that balance I think of not spending crazily, but perhaps one day having a room at home where I can workout it. I even have a corner of the property that could be redeveloped for it and needs tidying anyway, but that is also a fair cost.

I think those squat stands are a good shout. Can do a fair bit with them and reasonably portable.

You can always do both. I may join a gym again to train some things like legs.

The powerlifting bar has centre knulring and a different coating. This bar has black oxide coating which means you'll feel that knurling more. The powerlifting has chrome coating which is better at resisting rust.

I might wait for the powerlifting bar to come back in stock then.

Well, I took the plunge.

and

In the winter I can either go to the gym or workout on the patio under the floodlights. Eventually I'll get a new summer house, but before then I can keep everything in the current shed/summer house and for the winter I'll buy a mini lockup tucked around the corner from the patio. At least I won't need to stress over queuing for racks anymore and I've quite liked the idea of an outdoor gym.

Thanks for your help @LiE, but my bank account isn't thanking you :p

This should get me going for the main things I want to do - deads, squats, OHP, bench, rows and I may eventually ditch the gym if I get the setup right.

Looks like I'll end up with some spare dumbells. I ordered 14's and 18's from Origin, then when I realised they perhaps weren't actually in stock, because after a few days nothing had happened, I emailed them to ask to cancel. Three days later I emailed again. A week later I raised a claim through Paypal and then within minutes I got a dispatch notice...

In those minutes though, I ordered some 15's from Mirafit. When I got the Origin dispatch I emailed Mirafit who also said it was too late and they would be on there way...

Nice! Some serious kit there. Look forward to some photos and thoughts.

Noice purchases! :D

I'd love something outside but Scotland gonna Scotland :p

I'll let you know how I get on with it, I just need to wait patiently now. It didn't record my house number with the Bulldog order, but I've emailed them, so hopefully they amend before it ships.

Whilst I've got storage at the other end of the garden, its a bit of a hike, especially in the winter.

I might look to get something like this that I can tuck out the way around the side of the house next to the patio, although it may need to be slightly bigger/stronger:

Anyone got any tips? Obviously needs to be water tight, strong, but needs to breathe too.

I received my Dumbbells this morning, I ordered on 27/04 so yea took a little while.

I'd put the bar in the house if possible to keep it from rusting. Plenty of shed options here too - https://www.tigersheds.com/storage-sheds/

Good shout, the bar can live inside. I guess the plates will be fine being mostly rubber? The rack may be able to live outside a fair bit?

Good website for sheds, thanks.

Plates will be find, rack I'm not sure. I wouldn't want it to be exposed to the elements so store that in shed if possible.
