Official Home Gym Building Thread

Hello everyone

Have any of you come across a top bike/set-up that's good for recording stats? I saw this 'smart bike' thing - http://blog.loxone.com/enuk/smart-bikes/ - and it got me to wondering about the best way to log distance and stuff for training purposes. Anyone know of any other gadgets or gizmos that do the same thing...? Cheers all! :)

Had a look at a turbo trainer and TrainerRoad?

restylefitness sell decent bikes for home use but they are expensive, as for converting a road bike to use indoors, surely that defeats the purpose of it being a road bike, etc also no wind resistance, etc making it a lot easier so comparing stats would be useless with outdoor sessions, etc.

therefore either use the bike outdoors and use a gps system like endomondo to track stats or buy a decent indoor bike.

eva foam is useless, rubber is the only matting worth buying.

strength shop do cheap thin mats, fitness superstore do some expensive thick mats. otherwise try and find a local supplier of horse stall mats which are also suitable for gym use.

Hi
what would you rate the fitness superstores mat to the strength shop one?

2 mats at £114 free delivery as part of my rack package

or

i would get 4 mats inc delivery for about £90, these would be doubled up i guess

2 mats are only going to cover the power rack.

if your okay with deadlifting inside the rack then you won't need any more, but should you move to the side slightly, the weight is going to hit your rack and damage it.

i have like 6-8 mats in my garage in total i think.

2 fitness superstore ones and then around 4-6 strength shop ones.

imo you need at least 3 fitness superstore ones (2 for rack then 1 for deadlifts) or 6 strength shop ones (2 for rack, then 2 sets of 2 doubled up for deadlifting) as they are smaller in size as well as depth.

if you want to save cash you could get away with 2 strength shop ones for the rack and then 1 fitness superstore one for deadlifting but postage is high so probably better ordering all from the same place.

should you want to add dumbell work in you would require 1 more additional mat.

so i would order 3 mats from fitness superstore unless you want to do dumbell work as well then get 4. you can then haggle with them over the phone for discount.

my mate has like 10-12 fitness superstore mats in his home gym, but he does have a lot of equipment.

As always thanks for the prompt and informative reply, been approximately working out what my total package cost will be with the variations of the mats. I will likely do very little dumbell work have some lame york ones that i will do light work sitting on the bench if i do any.

£1,064 2 mats from fss
£1,117 3 mats from fss
£1,090 6 mats from strength shop
£1,050 2 from ss and one from fss approx
could be the sweet spot of getting one from fitness superstore and 2 from strength shop for the rack. although i think my budget will allow me to just up it to 3 from fss and make it look tidy.
from the pic the ss ones look a bit rough.

the strength shop ones are made from recycled rubber, it's like chipboard (compressed bits of tiny rubber), the fitness superstore ones are made from new rubber and are solid.

i have both and although both have their merits, the fitness superstore ones are far far superior in every way, if you can afford them they are the ones to go for, but for those on a budget strength shop ones are good for the money.

2 fitness superstores mats is what I use, they're real heavy duty and weigh a lot too.

being a smaller guy the folding one might be more ideal although without seeing it I cant be too sure,.

If by smaller you mean height then dont buy a bench thats too tall or you will find it useless no matter how strong it is.
I'm 5' 6" and anything over 18" tall is an absolute no no, 16" is around the perfect height for me but good luck finding a FID bench that low :)

The non folding Body Solid bench is around 22" tall so i would scrap that one no matter how tall you are.
