Official Home Gym Building Thread

Hi guys

this is the guyformerly known as dhillon83, have no clue why i was chucked off, hopefully it wont happen again.
I have decided against the bodysolid not a fan of the 3inch spaces between the holes. I have been given a quote of £883 for the below items from Fitness-Superstore:

Powertec Rack- PTWBPR11-B
http://www.fitness-superstore.co.uk/power_cages/powertec_workbench_power_rack_black_/13503_p.html

Bench- PLPFID125G

145Kg Rubber Weight Set- BPOSRTG145
http://www.fitness-superstore.co.uk...bber_encased_trigrip_olympic_set/17317_p.html

would you say this is a good deal, i know its all new but this is a bday gift for me so i will probably add with used goods later on, i can see plenty of good advice on mats on this forum which i will take note on.

will try to haggle although the guy from fitness superstore said he applied some discount already to it i think i can get some more out of them hopefully.

contacted powerhouse for a quote on the BodyMax and Body Craft models they have and will see what i get, although i heard these are their in-house designs and probably not as good as powertec.
they do have this package online but with iron weights, trying to see if they will do a custom one for me.
any advice much appreciated budget inc mats is under a grand preferably under 900.

I'd go for either the Powertec or F430 personally. Be prepared to weight getting on for a month for the rubber weights from Powerhouse. My F430 rack arrived within a week but my weights will be delivered this week sometime; 3 weeks+ after I ordered.

Do you also need a mat? Maybe get a better bench too? I went for the F602 and although I haven't used it yet it looks solid and looks like it will take a lot of weight, but it is £70 more than the one you listed.

In summary go for either F430 or Powertec and perhaps invest in a slightly better bench.

Hi thanks for the advice I basically got told from fitness superstore they won't budge on price I'm considering a body solid utility bench they have which will take it to about 950 odd but it looks more solid no pun intended, slightly wider as well.
Apparently powerhouse have the weights in stock although that could be just to get the sale. Looking at psycho Sunnys first post it pays in the long run to get quality so I think although it will cost nearly 200 plus more the power tec package is slightly favourable. Will decide before end of week as I want to cancel gym pretty soon.

i would get a better bench in the powertec package, that doesn't seem to have any max capacity advertised for it, etc. you want something which can easily handle your weight plus say 100+ kg on top of that no problem, to future proof yourself. i think mine is rated for 1000lbs which is around 400kg+.

you don't need to spend £300+ on a bench but i would pay slightly more than £150 for the safety aspect of it. whereabouts do you live as gumtree can have really good second hand stuff, but harder to find in less populated areas.

i managed to find about £3K worth of stuff on gumtree from a gym which had closed down for about £1K.

the guy was also selling a rack which i already had as well as a lot of other stuff which i had no use for, but the stuff was so cheap i decided to just get anything i think would be worthwhile for me in the long run so i bought a second bench off him.

but it takes months to find decent stuff second hand most of the stuff is the cheap argos crap and you will need to sift through all of that to find something decent.

buying new is usually the only choice if you want the stuff right now, and don't have access to say a van or large MPV to get the stuff from A to B.

as for matting strength shop do some really cheap ones which you can double up in the area you will be deadlifting on, everywhere else should only really require 1 mat, or if you want really thick mats try and source horse stall mats nearby locally, there are lots of different types though of horse stall mats and a lot of them are unsuitable for gym use, so make sure you check them out properly before doing so, only every buy rubber mats not eva foam or foam, they are terrible and wont last long.

avoid the horse stall mats which have holes in them, you want a thick solid rubber mat with some slight pattern on it or no patter at all, it's rubber and shouldn't be slippy when dry whereas horse stall mats are used in damp areas so some come with holes, etc which make them not that suitable for a gym.

thanks for the advice I am looking at the powertec package as I want a decent rack and overall they seem to have more favourable reviews then powerhouse’s own brands. In terms of bench fitness superstore have offered to add the body solid folding one in to the mix which ups the total to 950, although I am also thinking that the non-folding one might be ok. I am sure they will reduce the 950 if I go for that one as it is £20 cheaper than the folding one. Do you guys have a preference on one?

As this is a gift my wife is fine forking out for good kit additional items like weight tree or curling bar etc I might get used later down the line, as I am in a good catchment area for gumtree/ebay.

being a smaller guy the folding one might be more ideal although without seeing it I cant be too sure, the warehouse is about an hour away so I might give it a look if I can but too many commitments at the moment to take time out to see it.
regarding matting I am in SE London/NW Kent and might look for some local distributors for horse mats but strength shop and endurance mats might be the way to go.

Apparently the Powerline bench i originally put up is only good for 200kg although some sources say more than that i think thats just a little too low for my liking as with my current one lift i would be close to 180Kg including my weight.

Hello everyone

Have any of you come across a top bike/set-up that's good for recording stats? I saw this 'smart bike' thing - http://blog.loxone.com/enuk/smart-bikes/ - and it got me to wondering about the best way to log distance and stuff for training purposes. Anyone know of any other gadgets or gizmos that do the same thing...? Cheers all! :)

restylefitness sell decent bikes for home use but they are expensive, as for converting a road bike to use indoors, surely that defeats the purpose of it being a road bike, etc also no wind resistance, etc making it a lot easier so comparing stats would be useless with outdoor sessions, etc.

therefore either use the bike outdoors and use a gps system like endomondo to track stats or buy a decent indoor bike.

Cheers I will likely go for that one, just looks a bit to tall but I think it will be fine for the rack. Body solid is meant to be quality. Regarding mats stay away from Eva foam yes?

eva foam is useless, rubber is the only matting worth buying.

strength shop do cheap thin mats, fitness superstore do some expensive thick mats. otherwise try and find a local supplier of horse stall mats which are also suitable for gym use.
