****** Official IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad ******

I can't agree with that at all, if you want button clicking goodness then it will satisfy that, but when it comes to having a fluid campaign, and well priced aircraft addons they fall down every time. The only reason I stopped playing A10 is because there was no sense of completion at all.

As you say, we will see, but comparing the quality of ED and the RoF teams i'm with RoF every time

Seriously... the quality of 777 the makers of RoF is rather poor when you compare it to ED, sure if you want a good campaign then yes they cater for that, but ED have tones of user created campaigns... However the biggest complaint I have with 777 is there attitude to the community, some of there aircraft Flight Models are KNOWN to be wrong and they flat out refuse to fix them... unlike ED who actively try and get to as real world figures as they can... I hope that 777 will be different with BoS but I doubt it.

While I enjoy 777 products I would never even DARE to compare them to the quality and craftsmanship that ED has when creating there aircraft... if they didn't they would not be able to charge such a high price for them.

I suppose it depends on what you want, but since DCS WWII is been made by the original founders of il2 I expect a good campaign :)

well you're probably right about the fidelity issues between the two, A-10 was near faultless however the 'quest for more DLC' attitude with them is one of my major bugbears.

For instance there are modders creating free aircraft yet ED think they can charge silly prices, including having a kickstarter for DCS WW2. Is ED not big enough to stump up $150k??? Plus 2 of the aircraft for it are already finished and have been a paid for addon for ages now.

In all fairness I hope they both do well, a bit of healthy competition is always good ;)

Two? The P-51 is the only one out atm :( I cannot wait for the Fw 190.

But yes I hope they both do well and with luck people will start to breathe more life into the genre... War Thunder -> BoS -> DCS WWII

Well that's what I hope anyway ;)

game is shaping up great, DON'T spend $95 on it yet though, there is now a lot to do but it is still experimental and not feature-full.

When I'm sober tomorrow morning I'll update this thread as there has been a lot of changes!

As of now (20th Apr) there are a few aircraft in-game,

LaGG 3
Bf109 F
IL2
Ju87
Pe2
Yak 1

Multiplayer is enabled although I think it might be slightly problematic, I'll keep trying to have a go today.

No campaign as of yet, although there are a few single player missions just to get the hang of flying and stuff. You can set up a duel in the same way as rise of flight does,

IMO the only problem I have with it right now (personal preference) is the fact that there is no 'summer' map. The battle of stalingrad started in August 1942 and after a while of playing you will get sick of SNOW!!

All in all it is difficult to reccommend as I enjoy it but would not want someone to be disappointed by it not being finished etc. If you are desperate to look at some nice snow for $95 then its probably a good purchase ;)

No way will I pay in advance after the cluster**** that was CLOD.

Fair point, like I said $95 is a lot but personally im enjoying it.

Just had a blast on the multiplayer, I love the fact that you can multi-crew, so one person can fly and another can take over the rear gunner position!

Just had a great game as the PE-2 rear gunner, managed to pepper a 109 that was all over us :D

Would like to play with fellow ocukers if there is anyone wanting a rubbish gunner? :D

Yeah, that's far too much money. I'll keep an eye on it though. I might dig CLOD out again this summer and give the Team Fusion patches a go.

I have my own issues with DCS as per the thread here, namely as you put it the lack of any sort of dynamic mission or campaign, I've literally run out of fresh content - all the missions I know like the back of my hand, there is no fun in knowing what's to be expected.

However, your part about lack of completion is a bit odd - Pretty much every combat sim is about, within reason, the freedom to fly what you want, against what you want, with end conditions in the bounds of the product.
Completion is starting a mission and finishing it, is it not? (Or not making it back!)

'quest for more DLC' attitude with them is one of my major bugbears.

So you're saying you don't want more modules? Out of the handful we have you think it's enough? Do you really expect E.D to be able to make the amount of 3rd party modules there are currently all by themselves?
Isn't the point that if multiple studios can all work on different products at the same time we as a consumer are going to get lots to play with?

Luckily ED have seen the light regarding sales, there was a time they wouldn't at all, but once they hit steam and sales hit it was pretty obvious they saw a lot more income where non would have come from.

I've also played pretty much all the sims people talk about and fidelity is one thing DCS trumps, but only for a select few products which I hope grows.
IL-2 BoS Looks like something to fill that WW2 gap, because previous titles really didn't feel right, you could do some really stupid maneuvers where the flight model just ***** itself and doesn't know what should happen.

I don't think I'd ever buy a WW2 aircraft in DCS unless there was a whole package with high fidelity, right now they've got one, with some studios making others, but without AI and Ground units of the same era it's not worth it and that's why I'll turn to IL2.

Modern stuff? It's gonna be DCS :P

But seriously, find me modders who make DCS:A-10C quality products.

That for me would be a deal breaker.

Alas, $95 for early access is beyond Kickstarter territory.

If they still had the $50 level, I would be in.

The genre needs to stop being so elitist, it is at the point where it is as though it does not want to succeed any more than being niche.

What I was getting at by 'completion' is the effect you have on the wider game by flying a mission, think of a dynamic campaign in IL2, Falcon 4.0, Comanche Hokum or similar, I have never once given two **** about the result of my DCS missions.

As to the modders. there were quite a few doing it for free before ED monetised it!! Given the option of free of £20 a pop I'm not surprised they're doing it!

I'm really hoping the price drops to $50 post- early access, I think it might force them into a corner

It's the early access beta that is available, it is also cheaper to buy it direct from their website rather than through steam.

Don't be fooled into thinking it has been produced by the old Maddox team either, the core team is the one that produced Rise of Flight (nowt wrong with that mind you) with some of the staff from the team who produced cliffs of Dover.
