*** Official Kodi (née XBMC) Thread ***

Guys,

Sorry if this has already been posted, but a quick question.

Is it possible to boot straight into XBMC? So it's like an OS instead of having windows then load it as an app? :)

Thanks,
Jake

I use XBMCLauncher, it lets you choose xbmc as the shell, so it just loads straight into it. Even lets you specify launch programs as well i.e. if you have software that needs to be installed for remotes etc

I would love one but SWMBO lives in the dark ages, she can barely do the simplest of tasks.

I'm still trying to teach her how to use browser tabs :mad: { Get the picture yet ? }

That's the advantage of the harmony remote. Once you, the geek, get it set up, the non-techies (like my parents) can use it fine. It replaces the separate PC and TV remotes, and with the press of a single button, switches both TV and PC on (and puts the TV to the right input), and then when you are finished, one button switches them both off.

I have my harmony set up to switch between windows media centre and XBMC on the PC, then to switch over to the actual TV itself if ever necessary, and also to switch the TV input to the Wii's channel.

For XBMC and WMC, I have the different keybindings set up so that the parents press the same keys on it for the same functions and don't have to learn different keyboard layouts.

For an encore, I also use the remote to switch the fire on and off.

^^^^^ they had one of these still in stock....

I had just bought one (with two free bags of sweets) for my Son and it works a treat.

I would not really bother too much about a remote control that your better half can use, unless you have better luck than me. We have had expensive LCD Universal type remotes to replace the several needed for our system and my wife can still barely turn on the TV. Labelling up with stickers the individual remotes did not help much either. She will often spend ages just trying to get the TV to the right HDMI input and the sound to optical, never mind take the HTPC out of sleep. I did script all of that for one of the expensive remotes but that only changed the problem to something else.

The remote that I linked above works a treat for my Son and his wife when using the utilities that I noted a page or two back.

That's where the Logitech Harmony remote excels. The person using the remote generally does not need to know about TV channles, HDMI inputs, etc. They have a bunch of labels on the LCD screen like, "TV", "Videos", and they just press a button and everything is set up for them - including changing HDMI input/outputs, sound through a receiver or not, etc. It's streets ahead of all other universal remotes.

That sounds really good.
It reminds me of the Pronto / Phillips type that I had a long time ago. I would connect it to the PC and customise the LCD window and make my own icons etc for scripted controls. All this was an attempt by me to make it easier to just switch on all the devices for the person using them. It sort of worked ok, until my Son broke the glass on the LCD and that buggered that up.

Since then my wife just passes me the basket of remotes to switch the TV and amp etc on.

I have to agree. The Harmony One is brilliant. Ok it is a bit expensive. But I have had mine 2-3 years now. Brilliant piece of equipment. yes takes a bit of time to set it up.

Mine in the lounge controls tv, dvd, htpc, sky, squeezebox, AV Amp. So easy to use. Brilliant. I can leave all the other (6) remotes in a drawer with batteries removed. Only needs charging once every 2-3 weeks.

Get one. You really will enjoy it.

So true, so true .... ahhhhh the days of idling time on ukha_d have long gone too

ps I'm going for a cheap solution - will post details when it arrives and is setup before upgrading to a fancy remote that will be out of reach of the kids
