*** Official Mass Effect 2 Thread ***

Have been playing this for about 4 hours now. I loved ME1 and I couldn't stop playing it till I finished it but somehow ME2 feels different. It doesn't have the awesomeness feeling anymore even though everything seems to be improved, especially the cover system, I think something must be wrong with me or this could be my recent Fallout 3 discovery which was a superb game.
Keep at it, as I felt the same way being a major ME1 nut. The first couple of missions were dull as hell and it only picks up once you begin to assemble a your team. I am happy that the current in-reconstruction Citadel is more compact though as the original one was just too large.

Quick question relating to a new renegade playthrough. I generally want to be an ass to everyone in the game including my squad members. Will this affect the availability of loyalty missions or do they offer them regardless of the way you talk to them?

Thanks!

All the loyalty missions are offered regardless but I was renegade in Tali's loyalty mission which resulted in not gaining her loyalty...

Thanks. Just wanted to make sure since this playthrough will be on insanity and their loyalty skills come in handy!

Is it me or is sentinel class completely useless - atleast early on in the game... most of the powers you get aren't useable against anyone with armor, shields or barrier - which is most of the enemy... and your weapons too weak to take advantage of the extra sheild abilities.

Sentinel is a classic tank, jack of all trades, master of none... easy mode once armour and warp is upgraded though (+ pick an ammo upgrade for biotic barriers).
edit: didn't bother with any points in cryo and overload skills, heavy warp pwns everything. Add fully upgraded geth shield if you want to become indestructable...

I didn't like Zaeed at all. He felt so tacked on and didn't really fit in.

Yeah, a missed oppotunity like monolith, would've been great if he was a proper Ray Winstone type gangsta!

I found the opposite. I'm playing on hardened and while it's a challenge the warp and overload skills are a godsend against everything from Blue-Sun mercs to Collector Assassins.

Hmm I don't have warp or overload - tho I've only just done the first bit leading upto omega.

EDIT: Guess I'll have to put the points into getting there... deffinatly very underpowered without them trying to do the arcangel mission.

I can't really make my mind up about Biotic/Tech skills in general tbh. It seems against general fodder, that is, the weak enemies without Shields or Armour that tend to attack in packs, skills like Incinerate, Cryo Blast, Overload, Pull, Throw, etc, and obviously the Unstable Warp has a massive explosion radius but requires 2 Biotics to use it, are all useful for taking them out, but then again, what isn't? Almost all the skills are rendered useless when an enemy with massive shielding or armour comes to play which is where you tend to actually need them.

It seems that Soldier has gone from being terrible in ME1 to been far superior in ME2 imo. His skills just seem so much more useful in all situations and thanks to a full selection of guns you don't have to worry about ammo too much.

I agree - first play through ME2 as soldier with maxed out concussion, maxed out adrenaline rush, commando, barrier (advanced training) with heavy pistol, light machinegun and viper sniper rifle (I didn't go for the widow) - everything was very easy on the hardest difficulty - biotics were pretty much dead in 3 shots tops. Bosses were dropped v. quick too. Getting low on shields - hit the barrier and instantly back in the fight.

Playing as sentinel I've had to drop the difficulty.

About half way through your 'recruitment drive' you are able to research a tech that for a small amount of eezo all your points are refunded to be reused, so don't be afraid to experiment!

when i first started playing mass effect 1 it took me a while getting into it.
at first it just seemed too big a game..getting used to the game, the controls, all the places to go, the upgrading..all these weapons..yet it ended up being 1 of if not my favourite (sp) game of all time.

now i love the graphics of mass effect 2 but it just seems so much more restricted..dumbed down..consolized(is that even a word?).

i bring up a map yet i cant place a marker...so i walk and now when i try and bring up the same map i get an arrow pointing to tell me where to go instead.

i try and pull my gun out(prepare for combat) but now all of a sudden it isnt allowed until its spotted the enemies.

even though the places are more populated the places seem smaller and less rewards for exploration as its usually a straight(ish) route to your obj(slight exagg) and the rest is blocked off.

combat has changed...now instead of long fire fights and using your powers every once in a while to change the balance ....you seem to have to fight with your powers sometimes more than with your guns as YOU WILL run out of ammo with your preferred weapon....and talking of guns where have they all gone ?

upgrading from earned experience was great as it happened quite often with about 10 different areas and 12 levels...now i get 4 levels with just a few different areas ?

now im not very far into the game and it will probably get better but from first impressions its a quite a bit of a let down...maybe because i only just finished mass effect 1 a few days ago and it seems too different to me.

a better way of describing how i feel is....think first level of Deus ex(newyork, statue of liberty) and that freedom you had of doing what you want the way you want in a nice big open location....what a beautiful pc game.
now think deus ex invisible war(consolized)....not a bad game in itself but just too different from the first.

I think the actual levels should have been much larger and offered many more missions

I spent about half the game on the Citadel on ME1 and most of the levels were quite large.

Combat is pretty good I think, but the levels are all painfully organised. It is always painfully obvious when your about to step into a fire fight because there are lots of mini walls or crates laid around the room.

Although I really do like ME2 I really do feel there is a lot of room for improvements.

Also I would love some higher res models for us PC gamers.

I loved playing the game and really got into it. One thing though, did anyone else think it was a bit short? I did all the side missions before doing any of the story lines but I still can't help but think there was more that could have been thrown in.

Agreed, it seems sorter than the first one. Most of the game is spent recruiting then gaining your team's loyalty not following the main story.

Absolutely loved it though, just wish it was a bit longer.

Like the first game, I'm confused that people are saying it's short. I'm about two thirds of the way through with 29 hours on the clock. 35 hours was the length of my average ME1 play through.

I can only assume people are skipping a lot of the optional dialogue, side quests etc.
