**** Official Microsoft Flight Simulator Thread ****

Bit of a noob with the tech here so I hope someone can give me some advice. My current spec is:
i5 8300
GTX 1060 6gb (mobile - this is a laptop)
16gb RAM (2666mhz)

With my settings, I get about 25fps which for a flight simulator is playable in my opinion. On task manager though, it says it's using c.40% CPU, between 11 and 12gb of RAM and 95-100% of GPU. This means I'm GPU limited right? If I upgrade my RAM to 32gb, does that take any load off the GPU at all? As noted above, I'm a total noob with this stuff so go easy on me for what could appear a basic question to some of you. Thanks in advance.

Go to sound mixer and yo will have sliders for separate applications, I suspect FS is on 0, this happens occasionally especially if you mute game during download.

From what I've heard on the grapevine, the sim is an absolute mess behind the scenes. Rushed out before Asobo were ready, MS forcing them to gimp core access to make sure it has feature and add-on parity across both the PC and XBOX versions. If anyone in this thread is of the ilk that uses PMDG or FSL-level add-ons, you're in for a long ******* wait.

EDIT: As for the British voices, good luck. Sim doesn't even support metric units (litres or kg for fuel, hPa for altimeter/QNH settings), doesn't support supersonic flight etc. It's a mess.

When you look at what Asobo have done previously (cartoony console games), kind of wonder why they were chosen.

Should either have gone back to Dovetail, though it grieves me to say so, or tried to get some of the old FS team back and do in house.

Roger that on PMDG or any study level stuff. Probably not even going to get any decent freeware if it's that bad under the hood.

I’ll preface this by saying that I’m enjoying the sim, don’t have any real issues to speak of outside of niggles and refinement so I’m not in the camp of “it’s a total mess”. Clearly others are having issues though and that’s hard to ignore, I’m sure some are somewhat self inflicted but certainly not all.

That said I’m also not one for conspiracy theories, but I will say the launch of this came out of nowhere. One minute it was pootling along in alpha, one of the surveys that came out had a question along the lines of “would you buy the sim in its current state”, and next thing you know it’s having a 2 week beta period and released! Everyone was expecting a fall launch at the earliest, and the release date announcement was met with incredulity looking at the weight of sentiment among alpha testers.

Why did they suddenly go from no set date to launching the next month with a ridiculously short beta? Another month or two in the beta bug polishing oven and they could have released a much slicker product which wasn’t beset by installation issues and crashes, released with VR and triple monitor support all included etc.

Does strike me as odd. The plus side is that you get to try it out now like all the alpha/beta testers... I think we’re still beta testers now!

Once they’ve had time to fix the most egregious errors, implement support for VR and triples, move over to DX12 and third parties have had time to release decent products then I think this sim will really find its stride and be magnificent. Question is when that all happens, maybe not this year... in the mean time it’s still enjoyable for me though, it’s just not fulfilling its potential.

I recently upgraded my system ram from 16GB to 32GB and found that over all stutters during flights in MSFS 2020 were way less, especially when trying to stream/record video footage from the sim. I managed to record a night flight from EGLL to EHAM with little to no stutters whereas I did a similar flight before my upgrade and it certainly wasn't even worth trying to record a video at the same gfx settings (mixture of ultra and high).

So if you can afford it, I'd highly recommend upgrading your system ram.

To be honest, after years of swearing at X-plane 11 crashing and running at 19fps in overcast conditions I'll take this version of MS flight sim over that any day.

Just because of the stunning scenery quality alone I've got back in to VFR flying and GA aircraft. The ATC in its current format is leaps and bounds ahead of the default crap in X-plane and the weather system is amazing.

Just hoping the updates come along nice and steady and when the Airbus is fully functioning again I'll be right back at FL340

Got my sound back, Selected headphones in the UI, Doh! I didn't have to do this initially when i first installed the game? Odd? I'm on the £1 game pass so i went into marketplace to try and purchase the standard edition that i am 'using' Only get the options to purchase the Deluxe upgrade £66.99, The premium deluxe upgrade £70.99 and the premium upgrade £83.49, My worry here is that if i purchase one of these it will tell me i need to spend another £60 on the standard edition to upgrade to? Confused?

I have seen people saying they have got replies from customer service that you wouldn’t need a game pass subscription to keep access to the upgraded versions... it’s about as clear as mud though so not without risk I guess.

Also note there’s an apparent error and the premium deluxe is cheaper than the premium... so don’t buy the most expensive one if you go that route, the premium deluxe is the top tier despite being the middle price tier.

Not 100% sure but think I remember seeing for other games that if you but any dlc for game pass games and you cancel the subscription you lose the dlc as well as the game. If you can try and message Microsoft at least that easy you have it in writing

Thanks for the swift reply's fella's, Apparently they are dropping a massive update over the next few day's which pretty much mean's a reinstall at 80GB, My plan now is when this update drop's i will uninstall my game pass install and repurchase it on Steam, Hopefully the initial install problems will be improved upon in the big update, Either way i just want a fresh, Tidy install into my Steam library, Microsoft win, They get a quid out of me for game pass and i purchase their game, MS objective achieved!! :D

I can't think for the life of me why it would be anywhere near 80GB?

Maps streamed live so can't be that, plane tweaks and improvements won't be that big either
