**** Official Microsoft Flight Simulator Thread ****

After the bug fix update which followed world update 4 I deleted and reinstalled and a month later when it had finished I copied the entire game to an external drive so if I do need to delete again in the future it shouldn’t take that long to reinstall.

Quick update - complete uninstall and reinstall seems to have done the trick. Shouldn’t have to do this though, ridiculous.

Also, download speeds are terrible for MS uk servers it seems. 5Mbps max. I used a us vpn location and it was way quicker.

Really hoping we will get DX12 next month. It will be nice to see the game using more than 4 cores.

I'm really looking forwards to the performance gains they've teased too, but I see comments like this and I wonder what is going on...

It is definitely extremely mainthread heavy, and that is often the limiting factor in performance, but aside from that bottleneck it's clearly using more than 4 cores on my system already - are other people really only seeing 4 cores being utilised or am I missing something?

I’ve only looked at the plots in Windows task manager and it looks like only 4 of the cores are doing any ‘heavy lifting’ at a time. How did you get this display up? Is it part of dev mode? I can do the same and see what I get and report back.

Just the OSD of rivatuner (bundled with afterburner).

I can definitely believe it only heavily using fewer cores at any given time, especially whichever one the mainthread has been bounced to at that moment in time, but it definitely seems to spread load around for me going by the OSD.

Just got a RTX3080 today - tbh, MSFS still struggles and prefer XP11 and Xenviro for the weather.

I'm getting ~30-40Fps at 1440p 34 widescreen paired with a i5 9600kf at 4.9ghz, 64gb ram.

Whereas XP11 now getting 50-60Fps with XEnviro and with Orbx UK IMO looks better than MSFS 2020. Let's see what DX12 brings, but with that said my CPU is only 6 cores/no HT

I'm possibly stating the obvious with this post, and this is just me being a bit thick. Maybe it will help someone else though. I reinstalled this over the weekend after 8 months away from it, and noted something in settings that is suprising to me. Initially I had the gamepass version for a few months between August and October 2020, but I purchased it outright this time around. Despite uninstalling the game pass version last year and reinstalling a different version (the standard one), nearly all of my settings were maintained between versions, which is great. But "bing data world graphics" was switched off (without me realising as it's been months) which is really fundamental to the experience of the sim! I don't even remember having to switch this on the first time around. In fact I didn't even know such a setting existed that made such an enormous difference to the visual quality. Perhaps there is a set up wizard that you go through on the first installation that explains all this stuff, and being a returning player I wasn't given any guidance?

So after flying around for a few hours and getting reacquainted with everything, I thought the scenery looked really poor in places compared to the last time I played. When I say really poor, the normally lush green landscapes of Norway were just a fuzzy mess, like the foliage from a 20 year old game. I was quite disappointed about it, and wondered if updates to the game had aged my hardware even more, or if I was looking back through rose tinted specs. I was going through the graphics settings trying to work out what was wrong for a while, and at a loss, I then went to the data section to see that the aforementioned setting was off. All other online stuff was still switched on though. Turning it on again transformed everything as you'd imagine! I'd have thought there'd be some kind of prompt to let you know the experience is massively diminished by having the setting off. Especially given the difference it makes, and that most people have unlimited broadband meaning the data it munches is not an issue. Anyway, like I said, I might be alone in missing that setting off but maybe it'll help someone!

Yeah the framerate on a 3080 isn't much better than my 2070 Max Q. It's not really pushing the GPU

Anyone interested in trying their luck to beat the masses and help test the new performance changes, MSFS are going to be opening for 500 testers of the new “Performance Plus” flight.

PERFORMANCEPLUS FLIGHTING OPPORTUNITY

Posted by: Microsoft Flight Simulator Team

Thank you to everyone who has helped provide feedback in previous builds! We are excited to announce our next flighting opportunity – PerformancePLUS. This build has significant performance updates and more, and we seek users who are willing to provide feedback from a diverse range of setups, peripherals, and experience.

OUR GOAL
We would like simmers who are very experienced with our sim to help us identify regressions from our work on the update based on the most recent live build (World Update 5) and target areas of the sim in performance, stability, compatibility with hardware and devices, and aircraft.

Sign up will be through Xbox Insider Hub and requires a Microsoft Store version of the sim. Like all previous flights, it is under NDA, and all feedback and communication will be via a private forum category.

WHO WILL BE INVITED?
Registration will open on a first come, first served basis through Xbox Insider Hub on Wednesday, June 30th at 8 am PDT (3 pm UTC).

In addition, we will be including subject matter experts, past active participants, 3rd parties, and more from our internal list of users. We sent out forms earlier for aircraft experts as well as peripheral testers – if you have been picked out of that group, you will be automatically added to the Xbox Insider Hub and forum group before the flight begins.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE
When registration opens, only 500 spots will be available.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Because of a change we are making to how save files work, if you choose to participate and download the new build, you will not be able to revert back to the previous version as your save data will no longer be supported on the that version. Please keep this in mind if you would like to participate.

  1. On your Windows 10 device, launch the Xbox Insider Hub.
  2. Navigate to Previews > Microsoft Flight Simulator.
  3. Select Join.
  4. Joining will direct you to the Store to install Microsoft Flight Simulator
  5. If you do not sign up in time before the slots are filled, you will receive a notification letting you know that the test is full and there are no more available spots for this test.
  6. If you DO NOT receive the above message then you are in the test! An update for Microsoft Flight Simulator will become available for you soon (date TBD, will keep you updated) and can be downloaded through the Store app. This update must be installed to access the test.
  7. If you have been selected, you will soon have access to a new area of the forum to provide feedback. Anyone on our internal list will be added within the next few days, so please be patient to find out if you are in the PerformancePLUS flight.
  8. Be sure to review the NDA here.

Dev video about SU5 giving some look at upcoming performance improvements.... looks massively promising. From Seb's example at the beginning there on his i7-9700k and 2060 super @4k ultra (only 40% render scale due to GPU) in SU4 he was getting 30-40fps flying through New York with juddering. Exact same settings running SU5 and it's 50-60fps with much better pacing. Huge CPU utilisation improvements.

Really interesting is that despite the big performance updates coming for PC, it is not getting DX12 at the same time as the Xbox launch, but rather at a later date... so these improvements have come from a big refactoring how the core sim works even outside of any DX12 enhancements that might be possible. Seb mentioned there may or may not be further gains possible when PC moves to DX12 too.

Perf improvements will be grand. Kinda lost interest in playing on a monitor, but have to crank settings down so far in VR it looks a bit pants, and I can't bring myself to buy a new GPU atm.

Had an awesome play last night in the new motion rig - I flew a spitfire around some thunderstorms in Brest. Everything from the shaking of the engine to the bumps in turbulence around the storms, right down to feeling each tyre touch down… amazing!

I also have to say VR performance has already improved for me recently with the latest windows/nvidia/msfs updates. Not so much in terms of frame rate but it is much smoother for me than it has been in the past. I’m really looking forward to the improvements coming this month!

Praying this update fixes the VR performance issues.

Spent more time than I care to mention tweaking and testing this game in VR (G2) and have now basically given up playing as it’s a total dead end. And this is on a new build 3090, 11700, 32gb of **** hot ram, nvme drive etc etc. It had better bloody be better!

Also reckon the latest nvida drivers made everything much smoother. Never felt like this needs particularly high framerates - even in VR - so I'll be pretty happy if SU5 allows me to increase the image quality instead.
