**** Official Microsoft Flight Simulator Thread ****

Hopefully it will be a similar experience to when XP11 went from opengl to Vulcan. Changed the game for me in terms of being smooth

That update looks crazy good. At 1440p with a 3080, I’m hoping I should be able to hit 70-80fps totally maxed with this.

All relative, I see 90fps over Grand Canyon with ultra wide at 1440p (3440×1440). When you say 70-80, is this average or over NY for example?

I find it so hard to benchmark this game :p

Agreed….the same setup can you 50fps at 1080p and 70fps at 4K simply depending on where you are but it’s mainly cpu limited.

I'm wondering if they've come up with anyway to address this discrepancy for the xbox version. Would be madness to target 30fps over dense cities and keep the same compromises in areas where settings could be much higher.

Dynamic resolution scaling is the most obvious solution, but I guess other settings could be changed on the fly as well.

No I’m talking FBWA320 low over built up areas. Turboprop scenery flights are no issue at all.

Just the OSD of rivatuner (bundled with afterburner).

I can definitely believe it only heavily using fewer cores at any given time, especially whichever one the mainthread has been bounced to at that moment in time, but it definitely seems to spread load around for me going by the OSD.

Its a bit of a joke if MS cant make their own directx work properly across cores for their own game, cant be easy for anyone in that case. I guess its work in progress, hope I hear better things soon

Microsoft Flight Simulator Update 5 Improves Performance Tremendously, Available July 27th

The upcoming Update 5 for the Asobo Studio-developed Microsoft Flight Simulator will be a welcome boon to any and all players of the simulator. The development studio has issued an update via YouTube describing the performance improvements they've seen with their latest work into the game engine, which has integrated DX 12 capability - taking advantage of its "closer to the metal" capabilities so as to improve performance.

The update is dropping on July 27th, the same time that the game will be made available on the Xbox family of consoles. One can easily construe a scenario where Update 5's DX 12 and performance optimizations were made mostly as a way to make the game perform better on Xbox console hardware - the game is absolutely capable of bringing the most powerful graphics cards in the world to their knees at high resolutions and highest quality settings. With the same hardware, quality settings and playable scenario, average performance went from 32-40 FPS before the update up to the 55-60 interval post Update 5 optimizations. The update sees CPU utilization dropping by 25%; memory usage drop by 50%; and GPU utilization climbs from 75% up to 100%. Look for the break for a video showcasing the latest version of Microsoft Flight Simulator - with Update 5 applied.

I can't wait for this. I fly airliners almost exclusively and my 2700x is a huge bottleneck for my 3080. With glass cockpits going onto another thread it should mean I can enjoy them without final approach into big cities turning into a sub 20fps mess.

How do I get this to download to my games drive (D) and not my Windows drive (C) when I press download initially it downloads quite quick I did select D drive before that, but when I start up and get the 90gb update or whatever the game is, it keeps wanting to go into the C drive in window/etc/etc won't let me make a folder in my D drive next to where all my other games are. Says I cannot copy stuff to the new folder. Something about permissions. Will it have to be a folder in the main directory of D?

I think if you install from the store it doesn't give you a default install drive, the xbox app does, that's what I used. Also it should give you a path for the data files during/early on in the install which defaults to the c: drive. There's also a chance it just installed wherever it wants as the installs can be a pain in the ar*e. :) and yes the game install files are protected and has to be a standard folder/location.

Yeah it kept wanting to go into my C drive, got it downloading now to the correct drive. Had to make a flight sim folder on the main page rather than in program files on my D drive to get it to start downloading. All good now though.
Thanks
