Even more interesting that it was Nintendo of America that came up with the name :)

(not purely on their own, but mainly them)

please tell me your joking ?

(I always though they pay companies to come up with these idea's)

Most of you fail to notice that Americans dont call urinating wee wee.. So its only us brits that its a joke.. You may find the UK version has a altered name. Personally i like the branding, logo and name..

I really like the name. It's grown on me.
Most people didn't like the Gamecube name iirc... it grew on people.
Nobody liked the Wii's controller... now they do...
It'll be the same about the name.

Plus the WHOLE internet has been talking about it since it was announced. Good publicity if you ask me...

On a related note...

Don't know if anyone had subscribed to Game.Net news and chose to keep updated of any Revolution news?

Had this email, check out the sense of humour...

Dear Customer,

Welcome to your Nintendo Revolution Update!

Nintendo has officially announced that the name of their next console will be "Wii" - pronounced "we".

The company has yet to release any details about Wii, but you can find out more by checking out their official announcement at http://revolution.nintendo.com/

Nintendo has not announced a release date yet, so we have no idea when you'll be able to have a Wii. We want you to have a Wii as soon as possible, so we will keep you informed as soon as we know more!

Nintendo is expected to be demonstrating its Wii to the world's press at the E3 Conference in early May, so keep your fingers (and legs) crossed for exciting information about those games soon.

And I thought Nintendo were not getting involved in the next gen weeing contest that MS and Sony have been involved in ;)

If nothing else the name is a work of marketting genius, at this rate there won't be anyone who doesn't know about it - what's the old saying, theres no such thing as bad publicity :)

The problem being, that many people are incredibly fickle, and this name and negative hype will have alienated a lot of potential buyers. It won't hurt Nintendo on the whole, though, even if it isn't a massive seller here.

Now that the initial shock of the name has worn off what does every one think of it now ??

No different to as before. I'll be pre-ordering mine as soon as a price is released, will then start scouring reviews for some feedback of the games, book a few days off work ready for the launch and organise the wife to go to her parents so I can have some mates round with a nice array of fine ales and game until the early hours.

Headline nightmare.

- "Gamers line up to be the first to have a taste of Nintendo's Wii!"
- "Nintendo's Wii makes a big splash at E3"
- "Crowds lap up Wii"
- "Nindendo's Wii leaked"
- "Wii - it's in your face!"
- "Nintendo hold back their Wii"
- "Nintendo finally release their Wii, to great relief"

Odd name, though :D

What does it translate to in Japanese?
The following is stolen from a slashdot comment.

The short answer is that it doesn't translate to anyting.

The longer answer is that Japanese obsoleted the "wi" sound many years ago, and the most common way of making similar sounds in loan words and sound effects is to use the two characters "u-i" instead. As there are no suriving Japanese words that start with "wi," unless there's some ancient meaning that only a classical language scholar would recognize, this is just nothing but a sound effect word, like "Wheee!"

Oh. I just saw the bit about asking us to lie. Hmmm....

Yes, "wii" is the way that nobles in the Sendai region used to say "ii" or "good." The use of ancient Sendai dialect evokes images of both the area's Tanabata festival and the legendary samurai Date Masamune. It is the spirit of big, brightly pastel colored floats and badass, one-eyed, moon-helmetted warlords that Nintendo seeks to evoke.

Doesn't anyone remember how 'odd' PlayStation sounded when it was first announced? I remember my thinking it sounded like one of those things babies lay under and play with rattles etc.

It'll soon grow on you. :)
