Official OcUK Skylake-X & Kabylake-X Review thread

So much drama! Let's get real here: if it really is a problem it'll come out as people are getting chips (and I've spoken with a few who have a 10C and have no issues whatsoever). OC3D has been testing all day with different boards: no issues. So far it's 2 people having issues; get a grip. Remember the recent 7700K reports from those very few? All circumstantial and questionable. Let's give it time shall we?

looks like my dream of a x299 build has gone to ****. need to sell off all my spare/high end parts and just have one system :(

No offense mate and I know it's your money so do what you like with it but... You already have a blazing fast gaming system your not going to gain much by switching in that respect. If you really need multi core just get yourself a cheap ryzen 1700 set up and have the best of both worlds for little money, heat and power consumption. You had issues in the past but things have moved on a bit now you'll be fine :)

honestly trying to figure out what to do, Mrs just dropped a bomb on some hidden debt she's been keeping from me, which normally would be fine. but I'm in the middle of trying to change careers and taking a big pay cut.

so looks like I gotta bail her dumb arse out so the bills can be covered.

gonna have to see if it's worth keeping the 7700k system or not.

That sucks but if she's worth it then it's no big thing. We all love our pc's but it not the be all and end all.

Look at it this way when your situation changes again their will be even better stuff on the market :).

yeah I know real life and all:) more annoyed as I'm the kind of chap that enjoys buying new parts and was getting excited over choosing bits etc.

thankyfull a few friends of.mine will want most of my spares (things like AIOs, spare 1080ti) looks like the main thing I need to shift is my titan Xp, and see how much I can get for my 7700k setup as to what that would leave for editing rig.

You have way too much to begin with. No one needs a 1080ti and a Titan xp, that's just greedy :p

you can never have enough gpus.

somehow I've got 5 AIOs in my store cupboard....still got 4 pc cases in the loft (air 540, carbide 600c, nzxt elite and a 400c)

I'm a boarder lol

The video doesn't make sense though.

Clearly the problem is that the heatsinks require airflow which they are not getting, especially in AIO cooling systems.

That is why when you introduce a 120mm fan without a heatsink it performs better. It would actually perform even better with the fan and the heatsink. Imagine running it without the heatsink and fan, the board would be begging for the heatsink back again. It isn't insulating the VRMs in anyway whatsoever.

This isn't something that is unique to X299 either. It is simply the immense power draw of Skylake-X which is making it more apparent.

tinytomlogan has shown der8auers results to be wrong, he plopped an AIO on 4 or 5 different x299 motherboards and benched his 7900x at 4.8ghz (so more voltage than what der8auer was pushing) and recorded temps in the 50s-60s on the vrms.

there's also a fair few owners on overclock.net pushing high clocks on the 7900x and all have said there are 0 problems with vrm temps.

apparently there was an issue with der8auers power supply, so he said he's going to rebench over the weekend.

Any word on why silicon lottery were experiencing the same as der8auer?

Don't be silly. 300W doesn't produce any heat. Intel have found a way around the laws of physics.

I don't see how a PSU can possibly be causing additional heat in the VRMs. Heat is a function of energy going into the system and the resistance of that component. If a PSU was suddenly causing additional heat it would mean power consumption should be far higher than normal which it isn't. It would also have to be operating at higher then normal voltages/currents which would have very severe consequences.

it sounds like his PSU was giving out 10V not 12V making the VRM try pull higher current = Hotter temps

this is what johnnyguru reckons was part of the problem.

also several other people noticed dwr8auers thermal probe placement might have been conducting additional heat.

anyway, there's what? 10+ reviews of 4.6ghz on the 10 core, there's a few of 4.7ghz and 1 of 4.8ghz and the rest have had 50-60c vrm temps.

the mere fact that der8auer said the msi carbon was throttling down to 4.4ghz after 5 minutes, when oc3d has it running stable at 4.8ghz without issue shows that der8auer either has a magical set of faulty motherboards, or as pointed out he had some wonky results.

Are we going to see any cheap boards under £200 for Skylake-X?

there's one for £220 currently so might go down to 200 in sale?
