Instead of asking why Carrick, Barry and Huddlestone have been picked, come up with who you'd pick instead and when you can't come up with any you'll know why they've been picked :p

I'm not saying I agree with picking Heskey (I don't), but I'm surprised at the amount of people who don't understand the reasoning behind it.

Heskey's far more powerful than Crouch and won't get dominated by CB's which at times Crouch does.

Heskey isn't getting picked to win us the WC or even a game because of his football abilities, he's there because Capello thinks by having him in the side it benefits the likes of Rooney and Gerrard.

I understand what you saying but I can count on the fingers of errrr one finger when Heskey has terrorised defences.

Don't get me wrong he's well capable of it but frustrates the hell out of people when he doesn't.

Well considering 2 midfielders will probably be dropped for the final 24, I'd bring Young into the squad. :p

I don't buy this whole 'Heskey occupies defenders' argument... If the defender has an ounce of nous he realises he lets Heskey go because if he does get played clean through, Heskey is only going to spoon it out for a throw-in in true tried and tested Heskey fashion!
Maybe Bobby Zamora or Carlton Cole if either were fit would get ahead of Heskey, because at least they have an eye for goal to go with the strength, but they aren't fit.

Bent is in the 30 man, so perhaps Heskey will be omitted from the final 23 but, personally I am resigned to the fact that Heskey will be going to South Africa. I doubt he'll start up front however.
I expect Capello to play with one striker (Rooney), Walcott in the right channel and Stevie G in the left...i.e no 'proper' wingers, with the real width provided by attacking fullbacks Johnson & Cole. That leaves him free to play lampard further up the pitch where he likes it, Milner's energy in the centre, and someone else to hold back in front of the CBs; ideally Barry, but whoever's fit...

Quite surprised Young isn't named yet Barry and Carrick are, one is injured and looks certain to miss the first few games and Carrick has been in really poor form and not even first choice for Man Utd anymore. Scary that out of the three keepers named, one of them has been relegated with his club, and the other probably should have been relegated. I'm not sure we'd see such quality in other countries were their second and third choice keepers play at the bottom of their respective leagues.

Carragher deserves to go, despite Liverpool having a bad season, he is always a rock at the back and can be relied upon and with injury prone Ferdinand, Cole and King in the squad he could play the whole tournament as first choice. Huddlestone....why? :p

Just looking at cover for the right back and I know Carragher has played there before but Gary Neville must have been in with a shout ?

Huddlestone ? Well theres no one else left :D

Yeah I thought he would have been in with a shout, he's fit and in good form, defensively a million miles better than Johnson, but maybe Capello fears that his lack of pace will leave the defence exposed. But that doesn't make any sense when he's included Carragher who isn't exactly blessed with speed. :p

23 ;)

Looking at the squad, I'd guess that 4 midfielders will be cut; 2 CM's and 2 wide players. If Barry's fit then I'd imagine Parker will be 1 of the 2 cm's to be left out and it's a 50/50 call on Huddlestone and Carrick (form or experience).

Which wide players get dropped will be interesting though, hopefully it's SWP and Walcott (I'd have had Young in my 23 btw), but I wouldn't be surpirsed if it's Cole and Johnson that miss out.

edit: Neville's **** and even you Mancs know it :p

A Cole and Johnson in midfield and defence could get confusing when they'll be on both flanks. :p

Glen Johnson wishes he had an ounce of Neville's defensive mind. :p

Phil Neville just came to mind about another possible midfielder.

If Ratboy can stop wingers strolling past him with the power of positive thought then maybe he's defensive mind would be useful :p

And not that I rate him but Phil Neville's not a bad shout as a utility player when you consider the amount of players that have got question marks over their fitness.

I'll be very surprised if Walcott starts ahead of Lennon. What does Walcott offer other than pace, with Lennon you get pace as well as someone who can dribble and cross. :p

Well done Scott Parker, fully deserved imo. Wouldve been a farce if Hargreaves (who i rate but simply hasnt played anywhere near enough games) had got in the provisional squad ahead of him.

Heskey and no Cole?!! :(

To be fair Carragher has pretty good positional sense and I'd take that over outright pace. Just look at the times he's bailed Johnson out ;):p

This sums up Carragher for me.

Real shame Wes Brown isn't going to be fit, Carragher has been poor for a good two seasons imo.

Agree. Considering how slow and average Henry was in his day you've got to expect far more from Carragher in that situation. Think that was the only time he ever beat a defender for pace as well. Shocking.
