I think the real questions Capello will be thinking about are:

Warnock or Baines?
Should I keep Bent in as a 5th striker and sacrifice a midfielder like SWP?
Is Barry fit?
How is Joe Cole looking in training?
Upson or Dawson?

Given that Carragher has been persuaded to come out of retirement, surely he must be intending to take him to the WC (otherwise what's the point?).

Do you guys seriously think Dawson should get the chop? If we go by Capello's promise to choose his final 23-man squad based on form then Dawson should definitely go, without any shadow of a doubt. He's had an immense season for Tottenham, and I'd be more than happy to have him as backup to Ferdinand and Terry. Despite his lack of international experience, he has had a much better season at Spurs than Upson has at West Ham, and will have more confidence due to the excellent season Spurs have had.

I'd definitely drop Carragher, he's had a poor season for Liverpool. He looks slow and lacking in confidence, and has given away far too many free kicks and pens this year. I'd like to see Bent go too, in terms of form he has had a better season than Defoe, Crouch and Heskey, so it seems harsh not to take him. I'd get rid of:

Warnock
Carragher
King
Carrick
Huddlestone
Johnson
Parker/SWP (couldn't decide between the 2)

Huddlestone or Carrick is up for debate too. 2 months back I'd be certain that Carrick would have gone but Huddlestone's been in great form and Carrick can now barely get in the Utd side.

With Gerrard and Milner being able to play CM or out wide, that may enable Capello to leave out an extra midfielder (wide or central) and take Bent.

@nicktay: You're failing to see that Carragher won't be going just as a CB. He's the only possible replacement for Johnson at RB in the 30.

But Milner can play at right back, and has done. I agree that it is a bit risky to not have a backup at right back but would you honestly want to see Carragher at right back? I'd be terrified if he was playing there even against a lesser team.

I'd rather see Carragher at RB than Milner for certain. He's played there at times this season and I can't recall him having too many problems.

His poorest form was in the first month or so of the season while playing CB.

I'm just concerned at his lack of pace, you can get away with it a bit more at CB because of positioning but it's crucial at RB. If we have Carragher at RB he will have to stay back and not attack too often, otherwise risk getting caught out of position and not be able to track down the player he is supposed to be marking. At least Milner still has pace and youth on his side, even if it isn't his ideal position.

It sounds weird, but I'm looking forward to the WC regardless of how well I think England will do. The WC is obviously better with England still in it but I still love watching it even if/when we get knocked out.

OK chaps, who are your 7 players for the chop? If pushed I would probably ditch:

Warnock
Dawson
Walcott
SWP
Heskey
Huddlestone
James

Only reason I'm keeping Carragher in ahead of Dawson is because he seems to be the backup rightback.

I don't know what the James hating is all about, OK he's in a relegated side, but things would have been a million times worse for Portsmouth without him. (he deserves better) A poorer defence required him to be better work harder and save more.
Some of the saves he made there this season defy logic. (fa cup game against Southampton springs to mind)
He would be my first choice.

Secondly I know Walcott, doesn't get much time on the pitch, but when ever I see him subed on, he is influencial in changing the pace for Arsenal. Hence the Barcelona game, and when he put 3 past Crotia.

Plus it also states that Capello can bring in players to the final 23 that aren't in this 30.

Carra is a shocking player. Can't understand him or Dawson being picked.

You really need to get over this anti-Dawson thing, earlier in the season you said you wouldn't have him for Leeds. Ridiculous. :p

Dawson has been Spurs player of the season, he is a rock at the back winning everything in the air and is calm and composed with the ball.

Who would you have picked ahead of him, Cahill?

Really surprised to see Brazil leave out Ronaldinho and Pato & France leave out Benzema & Nasri. You get the feeling that if any of those 4 were English they'd be in the squad regardless of how their previous season has just gone, just goes to show how much we're lacking

im surprised diego isnt in the team though, yet baptista is. I would have taken ronaldhino as backup but he wouldnt make starting 11, he doesnt seem to have the stamina he used to have or the pace.

Agree with you on all points made in your post ... taking the Beast over Diego is just

I'm sure that Brazilian team will still excite and produce when they get going, but it just doesn't look as mouth watering on paper without the omissons mentioned, even if they do make sense in the long run for Dunga.

The nostalgic romantic in me was secretly hoping for an amazing recall for the real Ronaldo (R9 my favourite player ever) :D haha

Does anyone else think it's a waste that every manager is taking 3 Keepers ? surely it could free up another precious wild card or gamble on a young star by only taking 2 keepers.

France leave out Benzema & Nasri

I'm a gooner but not one that thinks Samir Nasri is the new Platini or anything like that but to leave him out and take Abou Diaby-olical is mental.

Also see he is taking Djibril Cisse a guy who has broke both his legs in his career over a younger, faster, hungrier Benzema ?

Still it seems it's only the 30 man squad at the moment, so no guarantee Diaby and Cisse will actually go to Africa.

I suppose it's the risk factor that if by some chance both keepers got injured, there would be nobody else suitable to take the place. At least if one of the outfield positions gets a couple of injury problems there is somebody from another position who can fill in.

Taking only 2 keepers would be a big risk. If one is injured then you only have another one as back up and if they get sent off or injured as well then you're buggered.

Fifa rules say you have to take/name 3 goalkeepers in your squad.

The squad limit was increased to 23 to reflect this :)
