Just been testing my opty @ 2.4GHz using 1.35volts and the temperature gets into the 70's stressing it with prime95.
That's not possible

  • Is the fan working?

  • Did you remove any obvious stickers from the CPU surface/heatsink base?

  • Is the sensor your reading from known good and working? (does heatsink feel hot to the touch?)

  • Have you got a stock/spare heatsink that you could try, maybe the fittings of the Arctic have become damaged?

  • Did you drop any of your lunch onto the CPU just before you fitted it? If so look closely for traces of pot noodle and clean them away.

  • Do you have any pets or young children? If so do a quick head count and see if all are present, if some are missing place your ear near the heatsink and listen carefully for any *meowing* or calls of *daddy*

Hope one of these suggestions helps :)

Last 2 arent even remotely funny, good job you aint a comedian.

Yes the fan works ;)
No stickers on the cpu and heatsink was taken straight off my opty 144 and placed on the 170.

After paste was cleaned off of course :o

THe temp reader is fine as my temps were spot on with my old opty 144

I had a FX55 that was like that, I couldn't even get 2.8GHz out of it and if I put more volts through it like 1.425 only 0.025 of a volt increase it overheated and shut down, I returned it to AMD who sent me a new replacement FOC.

UPDATE!!

Well i took my artic freezer pro off one last time to reapply Artic silver and try seating it for the last time.

I took the heatsink off and............

The ihs came off the processor with it

Was shocked for an initial few minutes.........Put the cooler back on the chip without the ihs and temps dropped considerably.

Now idles at 31degrees with 39degrees full load :D

Heres a pic of it after i first took it out :p

Guess the ihs was never sealed properly from the factory

Yeah i did.

Are you thinking the guy selling it took the ihs off and then "temporarily" stuck it back on?

EDIT** PMSL now the superglue is actually funny :p :D

Used AS5 ;)

does the rubber look all cut as if its been sliced with a knife?

you might get some uber clocks with it now.As long as its not damaged I suppose

what did you pay for it?

Doesn't look like it was sliced to be honest.

Its currently at 2.65Ghz on 1.375V

Going to stress it over night :)

I payed £265 and stepping is CCBWE 0546XPMW

Looking at the picture, thats deffo a 'cut and shut' job imo. He's saved you the hassle of taking the ihs off anyways, n1. Take a close look at the little chips and the core itself to make sure none have been chipped.

Then again, how do you know it is the stepping he said it was....

Exactly!

depends if the seller actually mentioned on his ad if the IHS had been removed, I suspect he didn't.

In that situation I would have a play with the CPU to see how high I could clock it, and then probably contact the seller and have words, possibly chase a refund.

No refund? then leave a nice big fat *negative  * with details.

I have a strong disdain for unscrouplous traders

He's getting 2.65 @ 1.375v. Hardly a 'bad' stepping for a 165 (whatever stepping it is!). If it didn't clock past 2.4 I would deffo chase a refund but anything past 2.6 for a 165 is a bonus imo.
