HELP?? Under performing 170

Bought my 170 from OCUK, sorry don't know what stepping it is, was too eager to install it.
Anyway, what I do I just cannot get it stable about 2300mhz.
I have tried increasing the CPU voltage to the max 1.55v, as well as reducing the timings to 3,3,8,3 2T @166hmz and increasing the ram voltage to 2.70v.
HTT is at 3x.
I am using a MSI NEO2 Plat nforce3 board, with 2x512 Corsair twinx 3200LL and 2x512 Corsair twinx 3200CPT.
I can get the PC to boot at 2600mhz but XP will not load.
Any clue as to what could be holding me back?

Thanks.

Running 4 sticks of RAM.

Cool. I thought as much.
What RAM is the best for OCing?
Noo.....too vague!!! :D :p. Don't ask me a question like that, I'll spend hours researching for you instead of doing my work! :p. Umm, I suggest you sell those 4 sticks and just get a decent 2GB kit - which will depend on your budget.

LOL - Sorry.

Budget is no a problem, though I don't want to spend too much more than £200.
I am mainly looking for something that will give me higher FSB and reasonable timings.

I will have been looking at either Crucial Ballistic or OZC Gold Series. Most people at Hardforum seem to swear blind by Crucial.

DO NOT TOUCH BALLISTIX - can't stress that enough. They have ALL been failing and Crucial no longer make them due to the amazingly bad reliability. Why not just use a divider and get CAS2 RAM - timings make more of a difference on A64 than high frequency RAM with loose timings.

ocz and muskin uccc in general clock better than g.skill sticks. you get what ya pay for I guess.

have you tried switching to 2t? if you can clock further it’s a sure sign your mem controller is being pushed a little to far.

I have gone for:
G.Skill 2GB DDR HZ PC4000 (2x1GB) CAS3 Dual Channel Kit, not bad for £158inc VAT.
I hope it helps my OC.
I see you have an Intel (sorry for earier advice then).

You made the best choice as an Intel user.

Sorry my sig was out of date.
I am now, and have for a year, a happy AMD OP user.
Had the 148 for nearly a year and then switched to the 170 last week.
I hope my memory selection is still a good choice for my system :(

Hmmm,

have been running it at the above settings for a week or more, very nice but I was just scrolling through this thread and the PC froze? Nothing was running hot just semi-idling in windows?

Makes me wonder if the issue lay elsewhere (Memory, PSU etc) as this passed a mental amount of torture tests (24hour quad prime etc)

for now its a nudge up on the vCore

TESTING! - 2.6GHz 1.425v

hate to say it wayne but i told you so :p no amount of stress/torture testing will give you complete and total stability. I would say it is either you memory or the cpu's memory controller, as I had some troublesome ram which my opty hated and it always made explorer hang, and that set-up was of course 24 hours prime stable ;)

I take it you have tried for more than 2.6 and been unsuccessfull (unstable), in which case the OS could have become slightly corrupt. I had similar problems when I went above 2.8, constantly trying different settings, rebooting, testing again etc, this must have affected my OS as I began to get some lockups etc with a 'stable' setting. Reinstalling cured it and all is fine again.

Another problem could be due to over ambitious memory timings as they are the no1 cause for lockups in my experience.

Now I think the AKASA 120mm silent fan has reached its limit, will have to dig out a more powerful 120mm fan. I was using the YS-tech 120mm monster but it somehow broke my fan controller? (too much current?). Aside from temp issues I believe that core 0 on this current 170 is a lot weaker than core 1. Will get back to some general usage now, hopefully that small increase in vCore will take care of that *one* single system freeze I had while web browsing. Will leave it like this for a week or two then it will be time to try the second 170 CCBWE 0550 UPMW I have sitting on my shelf.

While people are enjoying there dual core cpus playing the latest games and rendering twice as fast big Wayne will be there running his new and improved 96hour hextuple-prime XtremeXtremeStability test
Wayne your gonna get hiccups along the way no matter how "stable" your cpu is, its just how pc and pc software is. theres to many other factors involved.
