*** Official Opteron 170 Ocing Thread ***

I have a theory that each time you apply pressure to the IHS (ie each time you re-seat or change the heat sink/block) it squeezes/displaces some of the thermal compound thats sitting under the IHS. So there is worse contact with the core each time this happens.
I say this because i must have tried re-seated mine >5 times and when i took the top off there seemed to be loads of compound on the edges/sides of the core but the middle was almoast bare!
I am prepared to get this theory ripped to shreads but its a thought anyway. :)

I took the lid off my 170 a couple of days ago and was absolutely crapping myself.
Prior to popping the lid couldn't get it stable above 2.8 even though it did that on stock volts (should say 1.35v in sig) with an arctic cooling freezer pro. Tried gradually upping the voltage but figured temps were the limiting factor. Switched to H20 and no change.
I would run prime at 2.9 bumping the voltage higher and higher (up to 1.575v) temps approaching 60C   Tried reseating the swiftech apogee but still no change.
De lidded after days of deliberating (its a 550vpmw so was easily re-sellable on the bay) voiding the warranty and losing the resailability was a VERY tough decision especially as i haven't done it before.
anyhow took a while but did it and temps have dropped to 45c max load running 2 instances of prime (well sp2004) with 1.575v. It will run at 3.1Ghz but fails prime after 1min on core 0. tempted to up the volts a bit more but will see. Prime stable at 3.0 at 1.575 at the mo. :D
For me de-lidding the cpu made a big difference. I think it was due to the poor contact under the IHS.

This sounds like the same thing thats happening with me. . .

So tempted to flip the lid!

yeah, a lot of people use the blades out of a decent shaving razor like gillette. the blades are around 0.1mm thick and really sharp. cuts through the silicon like butter and gets between the ihs and pcb no probs. I'm gonna use an extra thin single edge replicable razor blade, the thin ones are around 0.2mm and dont bend quite as much as the gillette type blades. probably best to get an idea of where those surface mounted ic are on the cpu, so you know how far to jab the blade in.
what ever you do dont use a craft knife with a heavy hand.

Gillette - the best a IHS can get! :p

Oh dear... Made me laugh mind.

But really, get a whole load of cheapo BIC razors and split 'em up.

And extra exciting news..!

I'VE JUST GOT MY 165 FROM THE STATES!!!

Ehehehe, i'll get playing with this badboy tonight...

Agent.

P.S. DAMN IT! I'm going to watch Les Miserables tonight.

Oh well, some time next week.

I used wilkinson sword double edged blades. Taped of one side to leave 5mm of blade showing. Worked a treat for me, much better than when I used a scalpel and destroed my old 165 by scraping the PCB.

GL ;)

^^ Thats what I used. £2.49 for 10 from your local supermarket. Looks like I will have to de-lid my next 9 cpus otherwise its money wasted!

Upped the volts to 1.6v in BIOS 1.63 in CPUZ and was looking good for a [very] short while :-

:D
but then..

reluctant to put anymore through it. :( the fun has to stop sometime!

Come visit us in the 165 thread :D

Exactly that.
I STILL think temps are limiting me. the PWMIC just cooks even with a 80mm fan blowing over em. Did have a waterblock for em but didn't work at all. Even at 1.6v cpu temp doesn't go over 49c but PWMIC shoots up to 70c virtually straight away.

Gonna have to give this a go me thinks.

Well it looks like the 170s are finally calming down.

Anyone got any good clocks going?

I've sold mine (pending payment) in the mm.

Oh well, bye bye my pretty.

ssshhhhh....

I've got a 165 CCBBE0610DPMW from the states in my machine and its going 2.92ghz with 1.45v - Max temp is 45Load on my usual Air system.

I'm putting togther water cooling atm to see if I can hit that magic three...
