Final final (well for now!) question,

Any recommendations for guides on ocing. Not oc'd in about 4yrs so uefi bios is a bit new to me!

OC ram first.

Then CPU:

Set SOC to 1.1v

Bring vcore up to 1.4v try for 4Ghz. 40x multiplier.

Try to stabilise at 1.35-1.4v

Linx for memory stability test
Prime 95 for cpu stability test

Enable overvolt protect if avialable.

hmmmm so seems I may have a failing bios battery. noticed the time was out when I turned it on this afternoon, so changed it to the correct time but it keeps losing about 30mins every couple of hours.

how the hell does a virtually just out of the factory motherboard have a failing battery?!

I have a CH6 and had a recurring reboot when turning off. Rebuilt it, reinstalled windows, the same thing. Finally about 3am one morning, I swapped the CMOS battery for a new one. Instant resolution of the problem.

There are definitely some dodgy CMOS batteries out there. Looking at you ASUS.

yea I'm a bit stumped now - stumped and bit hopeful that the board isn't dead afterall (see post below I put in the motherboard section)

tried turning it back on before I went to bed last night and it booted up fine, everything seemed to be working ok. system time was out again though. went to power off and windows shuts down but everything else stays powered on, fans, water pumps, leds etc.
pressing and holding the power button doesn't make it power off, only way to do that is to literally pull the plug. but if you do pull the plug it refuses to come back on straight away. seems you have to leave it a bit before powering back on.

well you add gigabyte to that list too - changed the battery and shutdown and restarted a few times without issue.

how the hell does a 170 quid motherboard that was almost certainly manufactured within the last 4-6 months have a bios battery die so quickly. were these a a box load they had laying about in the warehouse for about 10 years?!

BIOS batteries are and have all been the same for the past decade, so.................................... yeah, maybe.

Edit: glad you got it fixed tho :)

that's why I think it must have been a batch they had kicking about from about 1996!!

I imagine the conversations going something like this.....
Big Boss Man: 'Christ we need to get these am4 ryzen boards out the door, retailers are screaming for stock'
Lowly Employee: 'but but, we're waiting on a delivery of bios batteries'
Big Boss Man: 'sod waiting on those, here's a fiver, away down the market and by a box off dodgy dave' :p

lol :D

Or they store them loose in a box at the assembly station.

I did consider whether it may have been down to using Bios flashback a lot, but that has the board powered up even if the computer is switched off. Needless to say the Duracell replacement is still going strong. I have bought another pack of two though just in case.

EDIT, The dodgy battery was reading 3.16V in HWMonitor before replacement which is why I did not initially consider it.

I've got no idea because i have never looked, but where does the power come from for the LED's behind the plastic logo's on our motherboards ?
They stay on with a rig shut down.......................maybe it's via the bios battery ?

My lights have been running with pc switched off for months, it certainly isn't battery powered :)

I'm no expert. What's the tosh?

I haven't overclocked my CPU yet.

All the usual stuff really just with new labels.

Ensure you have a great cooler
Boot into BIOS
Go to overclocking/tweaking section
Set Ram to XMP. Only now this is labelled DOCP.
Change multiplier in stages.
Check temps etc.

There's loads of guides. Google is your friend.

That video has some tosh in there  .
Tosh from a guy who works for said company who builds the chip you are using who has direct access to the engineers.

You really beat a guide from the horses mouth.

I don't think you have seen the work gupsterg has put in with ryzen. Search for his name at overclock.net to have a look. He knows what he is talking about.

Is there any chance of Ryzen dropping in price when threadripper comes out? I know they're not really the same market. I'm looking to jump on board the Ryzen train but if there's any chance of a price drop I'll wait.
