** Official ** Season 2010/2011 Pre-Season thread

shouldn't have stayed up for that. Got to give it to gibson, he doesn't do anything yet always seems to end up on the scoresheet.

Prett much why he plays tbh. I quite like him, fergie must too. How was Hernandez? Looked decent at the world cup. Be interesting to see if he does well for you.

Just seen the goals from last night, 4 of them were very impressive. Macheda showing why we dont need Balotelli, just give this kid a chance. Great free kick from Gibson, if he can sort his passing out then there's no reason why he cant be a permanent fixture in the team with his goal scoring. Cleverly scored a great goal, showed brilliant technique, hope he goes on loan to a Premiership team and plays week in week out to come back to us a even better prospect and Hernandez scored a great chip - expecting big things from him this season, looks the real deal

Also read that the MLS All Stars were previously unbeaten in these games

Nice bit of composure from Cleverly for that goal. I am hearing that he maybe going out on loan to Newcastle for part of the season. On the one hand you always want to see young players come in like Becks and Giggs did and establish themselves from an early age. However if he is going to get a regular run to get some Premiership experience and then move to be a first team regular then its not such a bad thing

Exactly a move to somewhere like Newcastle would be ideal, somewhere like Sunderland he probably wouldn't play every week and on the flip side somewhere like West Brom are just going to be struggling from week one and likely to get relegated so ideally a move where he'll play week in week out in a team that's not going to struggle, Birmingham, Bolton, Wolves could also fit into that category

The thing with Macheda, he seems to do the things that most players struggle with well...and the easy stuff, not so. I guess he is still young and has great composure 1on1.

Gibson can potentially replace Scholes, his long passing is sometimes OK, but if hes given a short run in the team it'll help him I think. His goals are the essential bit, not easy to come by a goal scoring midfield in his role (don't say Lampard :p).

That Hernandez is going to be a real handful this season, he looked a mile offside because of his break away speed. I still can't take anyone seriously with the name 'Chicharito' on the back when he looks like a ladyboy :p

Scholes and Carrick especially are going to love Hernandez being in the team with their eye for a pass, could potentially make Carrick good again....

CHICHARITO HAS EVOLVED INTO....

BAYLEEF!

He does indeed look a tidy striker when he's played in behind a defence playing a high-line. It remains to be seen how he'll play against all the poorer teams that defend all game with two banks of four, but he'll probably score shed-loads against Arsenal... :(

This is the main problem with loaned players - they seem to need to be a lot better "naturally" than a player the loaned to club already have to get any game time , or be loaned to much lower league clubs (when the experience imo is worth less to a club in the top 4)

I would really hope that Cleverley gets game time he deserves at Newcastle (if he ends up there) I have a horrid suspicion that he wont though.

Whether he is better than Alan Smith (for example) right now is possibly highly debatable, but he surely has a good chance of being better option if he gets consistant game time

edit - lets hope Hernandez (Bayleef?) works out well with Rooney, while rumour has it he (Rooney) wont play the first few games of the season, I can see SAF persisting with 4 - 5 - 1 in big games , which we have a few really early this season - so Im not sure how long fans will have to wait for Hernandez to get a decent run of games

lol

*sigh*

Being an arsenal fan can be so depressing at times.

I'm afraid to say it, but Man Utd look to be a real force (and arguably underdogs to Chelsea, maybe Man City). A lot of people, even some Man Utd supporters I know, are not confident, but they will no doubt be up there towards the end of the season.

It's no rumour, it's come directly from Ferguson himself.

Thanks for the videos Tom. :)

Cleverley is already better than Smith. I really don't have many expectations for this season, so I'd be even happier if Ferguson just played these young players in our first team rather than loaning them out. Rossi wasn't deemed good enough to play for Newcastle remember. :p Look at him now. I think they'd kill for a player like him. (Not a pop at Newcastle).

I really hope United stick with their youth, I can't remember a story like neville/giggs/beckham/scholes in recent history.

City are ruining the game buying foreign, pushes our own talent out :(

The good thing about some of our youngsters at the moment is that they seem to have a real eye for where the goal is. Something a bit lacking in our first team at times.

Watched some of the Man Utd game in bed, the first two goals were absolutely unforgivable defending, but Man Utd looked really fresh and played the game at a very high tempo, even though they were playing a group of poor players they made it very difficult for them to play.

I know its only pre-season, but Walcott and Arshavin were really poor last night.

In comparison to Nasri and Wilshere there was no effort and apart from the goal from Walcott little good play. Arshavin actually looked like he couldn't be bothered which has been par for the course so far in pre-season. He appears to be in a similar frame of mind to last season and needs a kick up the backside.
.

I'd describe it as this, all 10 other Arsenal players have to link up perfectly and give Theo and easy chance for him to score, most of our other players can create chances for themselves, others and score any types of goals.

Theo looks hopeless, the reason he's useless and ridiculous as a winger, is his interplay, he can't pass, cross, run with the ball, defend, position himself mark anyone and use any common sense in anything he can do. Anything behind running onto a ball and shooting on his 2nd touch at most and he'll screw it up. He's awful.

Arshavin you might be being too harsh on, he's looked ok in other games, he's quite a stocky little guy and maybe just not fit. He's probably used to gaining fitness by training up in Siberia at -5c :p

But again, most of the team seem to just play worse when Theo's involved, he gets the ball, the left/central players push in towards the box, run forward and break their necks getting back after Theo loses it. Arshavin thought he was coming to a quality team only a couple players from competiting for titles, and found his take home wage slashed, the team far from competitive and being played completely out of position, in an unfamiliar role, he doesn't look very happy and I can't blame him to be honest.

On the positive side, Jay Thomas has looked pretty much fantastic, him and Wilshire look probably the best two players in preseason, both are SO much better than Theo, Diaby, Denilson again I hope they aren't loaned out but actually get games. Wenger has this thing about giving youngsters only a couple games a month, if they are lucky. I've not seen anything in the past 18 months that says to me Theo should EVER get a game before Wilshire. Thomas's passing, linking up, finishing, movement, inteligence and workrate have been top notch to be honest.

Frimpong I think looks better than Song aswell, he hasn't gotten overly excited, he doesn't rush forwards when he thinks he should be fine, he doesn't panick and crucially, he gets the ball and has that thing where he seems aware of where everyone is already and where he wants to pass. SO often he got the ball, turned and passed forward quickly, something Song/Denilson/Diaby absolutely kill us on, so so slow to decide to do anything that the other team has gotten 10 behind the ball before they get their pass forward(on the rare occasion it goes forward).

Really good goals last night, the last 3 especially. Cleverley is looking very good, I'd like to see him stay personally but maybe a half season loan or something might be best. Hernandez once again scored and I thought he must have been offside. But once again he wasn't, just like his goal against France, very well timed run and a cool finish.
