** Official ** Season 2010/2011 Pre-Season thread

Just out of interest, who thinks that Liverpool have a strong chance of winning their opening game? Arsenal have their own problems too, although admittedly not on the scale of Liverpool's.

Liverpool v Arsenal games tend to either be 1-1 or Arsenal win, so no I don't think Liverpool will win :p

Not a pre-season game but eurosport are showing the semi-final of the under 19 euros between England and Spain.

Spain 1 up and unsurprisingly Pacheco got the goal.

I'm not looking forward to the Liverpool game at all this season, I do see them beating us. Away at Anfield is a nasty start, made worse by the fact that Liverpool will still be in their Woy Hodgson Honeymoon, and will be determined to do a lot better than they did last term...

I don't think it'll be a cake walk by any means but I'm quietly confident that we will do a job on them, we've got a decent record against them in the past few years iirc and I think there's not much doubt that we are a stronger team across the pitch, if Liverpool have an in form Gerrard it'll probably be likely that most of their other players will step it up a gear as well. Let's hope Torres doesn't look fit by that time, that's if he's expected to start?

You only beat us last season thanks to Howard Webb and our first 11 is as strong if not better than Arsenal's.

Their lack of torres + our lack of defenders = a hattrick of goals from Dirk Kuyt scored with varying combinations of his ears, elbows, knees and ass! :D

tbf Arsenal beat Liverpool 3 out 3 times last season. Probably had a little more to do with football than Webb + I thought Arsenal were marginally better in all 3 games

We battered you at Anfield, should have had 2 pens and your first goal came from a free-kick which should have been a free-kick to Liverpool. I'm pretty sure even Sky gave Webb the champagne after that game.

The game at the Emirates was pretty even where Webb managed to miss a possible penalty from the clearest handball you're likely to see.

And then the league cup game :)

Yeah yeah, well if we're living in the past then how about the season before when Hleb got brought down in the box but no pen?:)

Don't start that, it was a clear pen. You should have had a pen in the first leg but Flamini should have been sent off that day too. You were fairly beaten :p

^see my edit, I was actually getting confused, your pen was debatable, it was the foul on Hleb in the first leg that was most annoying.

edit: and don't get me started on Bendtner being given offside in that 4-4 game, absolute disgrace, but for some unknown reason the media completely overlooked it (probably due to Sky getting overexcited with all the goals and not showing enough replays of it).

He was offside :p They showed the replay during the match and it was offside.

And lets not forget Vieira's dive at Anfield which Wiley saw but bottled giving him a 2nd yellow. Or the foul on Hamann which led to your equaliser when we were winning 2-1 at Highbury in the '03-04 season.

Or Jeffers dive at Highbury to salvage a point for you :p

SC Neusiedl v Arsenal

Arsenal starting XI:

Manuel Almunia
Havard Nordtveit
Laurent Koscielny
Johan Djourou
Kieran Gibbs
Theo Walcott
Emmanuel Frimpong
Jack Wilshire
Samir Nasri
Andrei Arshavin
Jay Emmanuel-Thomas

Substitutes:
Lukasz Fabianski
Vito Mannone
Bacary Sagna
Thomas Vermaelen
Gael Clichy
Abou Diaby
Alex Song
Emmanuel Eboue
Carlos Vela
Marouane Chamakh

2-0 at half-time, Walcott (28) and Emmanuel-Thomas (30). Both good finishes but IMO neither have had a good half.

Djourou went off after 29mins for Vermaelen - hopefully this isn't an old injury reoccurrence. Either way, we definitely need a CB before the close of the transfer window this week.

Wilshire and Nasri have been linking up really well and Gibbs has been making good attacking runs. Arshavin hasn't really got into the game, and Nordtveit and Frimpong still have a lot to learn. Koscielny is looking fine but nothing to write home about.

Substitutes for second half:
Mannone for Almunia
Sagna for Wilshire
Clichy for Gibbs
Eboue for Walcott
Vela for Arshavin
Chamakh for Emmanuel-Thomas

Thought Bendtner was level in that offside decision, but Reina didn't really try to save the shot so he probs would have

Edit - Pre season game looked alright, Nasri looks truly excellent though and Wilshere is very impressive, not sure if he's ready for the step up right now but he is so exciting. Decent showings from Frimpong and JET too, overall, the youth looks excellent

4-0 FT. Chamakh (51) (P), Vela (65). Chamakh handled the ball unnecessarily to give SC Neusiedl a penalty which was taken poorly and read well by Mannone.

Chamakh had a good game, he hunted the ball down in the final third and his large presence will help us this season. Frimpong had a really good second half - he controlled the midfield effectively and was very strong in his tackles and possession. Likewise, Nordtveit improved a lot when he was moved to his more natural position of centre-half after Wilshire came back on for Koscielny and Emmanuel-Thomas was given another run out in place of Nasri. Emmanuel-Thomas, for all his stature and power, seems a bit too cocky for my liking. He reminds me of Adebayor and I hope he doesn't continue in that direction.

All in all, we've scored 11 goals and kept 3 clean sheets. The competition have been poor but hopefully we can go into the Emirates Cup and our first game at Anfield with this momentum and confidence.
