I do think the optimum size was the X/XS/11 Pro-5.8” versions of the iPhone.

While I’m pretty much a lock for the AW7, I think I can last another year with my 11 Pro. He says that 24 hours before the announcement… lol

Apple have a special way of convincing you that your 12 month old phone is now rubbish compared to their latest offering :D

Which is why I'll be replacing my iPhone 12 Pro Max with the 13 equivalent. Mug

Also, I've had every phone on release every year since the first iPhone, it's become a tradition I don't want to break, which is ridiculous, but I love it

The downside of this is you will never experience the wow factor of a major update. When I went from the 6 to an X I was in awe for weeks; from the screen, form factor, responsiveness, camera quality - just blown away. I assume from the upgrade the X to the 13 Pro will be similar but maybe not to the same level.

Are you on the Apple Upgrade scheme or do you just buy outright and sell each year?

My iphone8 appears to be running slow and my 2009 imac is a dinosaur. I’ve been holding on for the last few months…..waiting for tomorrow. I’ll probably opt for whatever replaces the current 12Pro.

Yeh this man gets it. I’m the exact same!

The last time this happened to me was the 3GS > 4 :D I remember thinking wow this screen and form factor is amazing.

I'm not convinced. I think in order to be blown away you will have to wait another few years. The X is still crazy fast for 90% of what most of us use our phones for, the camera is still great, the screen is still great and there isn't much else to write home about. My X was getting sluggish and I thought about replacing it but I put a new battery in it and its back to its best.

I’m really not sure what Apple could offer over my current XR, apart from a fractionally smaller handset. The battery life has been excellent since day one and it does everything that I need. If I really want great photos I need to be arsed to get the DSLR out, but the phone is so convenient a slight loss of quality is acceptable. To be honest I still think the 6S was the best iPhone in terms of form factor, just wish the battery had been better.

I’m hoping that I can carry on with a sim only plan for another 12 months and get the wow upgrade.

What are we expecting from the new iPhones anyway?

Similarly I’m clinging on to my rMBP from 2015 which is hands down the best computer that I’ve ever owned (sorry self build OC’d gaming machines of my youth).

Smaller notch, minor spec bump, improved cameras etc. Typical ‘S’ upgrade on the iPhone 12.

We hit peek smart phone years ago so have low expectations of anything revolutionary.

The only ‘wow’ upgrade your going to get is spending £1500 on a galaxy fold these days.

My wife is still running a 6S+ and it’s more than sufficient still. It doesn’t have the sharpest camera but it’s more than fine for social media nonsense and we browsing/apps are fine. She doesn’t game on her phone which is what most normal people need the extra power for.

The 12 was already a big camera jump over the XR, particularly in low light and doubly so if you're focusing on moving targets.

The 13 Pro is expected to bring 120hz (but who knows, it's Apple and they could release a 75hz panel in order to milk another 10 years out of screen upgrades) and if that happens, along with all the incremental upgrades, I'd call it a 'complete' phone, unless you're interested in foldables.

One thing I wish I could do is enjoy the iPhone in its full glory without a big rubber case and screen protector. Apple hardware is such a joy to handle, but so fragile in day to day use (or I’m just clumsy!).

@Squink - the displays are all well and good, but if I’m not gaming on the phone does a mega refresh rate actually make a huge difference? I can’t say I’ve ever noticed a display lag on my XR. I also turn down the screen brightness quite a bit in day to day use.

I'm not a phone gamer either, and to my eyes, the high refresh still makes everyday use of the phone much nicer. It's noticeable in almost everything. Doubtless there'll be a luddite on here soon to proclaim that 120hz makes zero difference, and each to their own. To me and to many others, it's a huge improvement.

As an aside, the iPhone 12 is also noticeably less juddery than the XS I'm currently using, so the increase in processing power from the A12 to A14 makes the OS smoother overall as well. I'm absolutely not trying to convince you to upgrade and the XR still does everything well, but don't think that you won't notice a change moving to a newer model. If you're a light-medium user, and not particularly into tech, then it's probably not worth a big outlay unless you can comfortably afford an upgrade.
