I heard CryEngine 3 sucks from a netcode pov because it was designed for FPS single player games

I imagine this has been asked a billion times - so apologies - but what's the best throttle/stick combo, i.e. manufacturer and setup? I'm more of an ED fan and managed to figure that out fairly well. This seems more complicated :(

Bought a Cutlass when they first became available, but haven't been following progress of SC at all since then (mainly because my pc just couldn't handle it). At the time, the Cutlass was being touted as a good pirate ship, but I'm not sure I want to go down that route now.

So, my question is can anyone give me a link or something to a Wiki or FAQ that talks about the different ships available and what they might be suited to?

If you want traditional HOTAS:

HOTAS X - Cheapest option, great value too.
X55 - Now considered the go-to for many.
Ch Pro throttle + T16000M - Mix and match, this has become surprisingly popular as both devices are superb.
Warthog - High end, you'll need pedals too (no twist axis on stick).

If you want to use mouse, this is what I'm using currently:

CH Pro Throttle + mouse with an analog axis (like the Roccat Tyon).

If you want to dual stick, arguably one of the most popular methods now:

2x Thrustmaster T.16000M (great stick, can use either left or right handed)

or

1x Thrustmaster T.16000M (left hand) + 1x CH Flight/combat stick

I wouldn't recommend an X52, yes they're cheap but the stick is pretty dire. The X56 seems to have production issues and is fairly expensive just now too although if you get one without any button problems you might be reasonably happy with it, until it breaks :p

It's never updated much but at least has the theory behind each ship on it:

If you tell use what you'd like to do chances are those who have kept up to date could help out though mate, Cutlass Black (standard one) is fairly multi purpose but right now flies like garbage :( but at least you can fly it unlike some of the most specific ones like the prospector etc.

does anyone know if the misc prospector is hangerable and you can fly it yet ?

As halfmad says, its unlikely to have progressed much (if any) since the sale, which was probably about 10-12wks ago?
Its a complicated process, there can be ships that are done about 9mo after their concept, while others take a couple of years.

The concept sale is literally that, a nailed down concept, but all they'll have is a basic model to evaluate things. Just getting to that phase has no priority, they recognise what ships the universe needs, spec it, and then start on concept art, but it could be quick, could be back & forth, but once its done, it doesnt mean its straight on to the next steps because chances are the people who'd do that are either busy on another ship, it needs other game mechanics figured out before committing to a precise model, and it might simply be a lower priority.
At that point, its in hold till other things line up and they're ready.

With everything needed to promote a mining ship into production, they need the stuff they consider higher priority out of the way too, but they also need to be ready to start working in the mining mechanics too, we need resources to mine and their assets, the process that generates them in-game, and then all the stuff you need to do to mine it (more than firing up lasers or drills and sucking it up). If the team arent able to start that stuff, then the ship progress could be held up too.

Then factor in exploration, salvage, fuel harvesting, repair, science/research, on top of staples like bounty hunting, boarding etc and its not so simple, i'd say mining is probably the primary industry trade, but also a complex one, so it'll take a long time because none of this is 'press F to mine' etc.

Probably a lot more info than you were looking for, but thats the process going on behind the scenes. I'd actual be happy if we have it in Q3 next year tbh, and its the role im probably most excited for.

So there's absolutely no zoning, no replication 'tiers'...it's either an entity in the level that replicates to all clients, or it's not there at all, regardless of where it is in relation to the player? Jeez I don't envy them cleaning that mess up, major, major ballache to fix.

I'm sure if they knew how much investment they were going to get they would have rolled their own engine in the first place and avoided all this hassle. Hindsight eh.

Thanks man. I wouldn't mind something with a bit of versatility, although I'm more drawn to the exploration side of things at the moment. Something that could carry more than one person, but not super-huge.

Holy crap, tthe number of new ships since I last checked out the game!

Freelancer DUR sounds perfect for you.

Well after the Gamescon stream i was so impressed with it, that i upgraded my ship from the 315p to a constellation andromeda! I've always loved the look of that ship, now all i have to do is find a crew!

Yet another update to PTU... they are knocking them out every 24 hours again... must be getting close to going live.

Well the crew I normally end up with are next to useless so you will need to learn some good flying tactics.

Wait, did I just say that out loud

:p

One of the main reasons he chose cry engine was because they helped him a lot in the early days when he was creating the sales pitch and putting together a few vids etc...

Also a lot of those who wrote the cry engine are now working for CIG so there is a shed load of skill and experience to sort it. It's just time consuming.

Yeah the DUR is a good shout, possibly look at the 4 Reliants, the SEN variant is 'science' but i'd imagine a key part of that would be exploration, its a small 2-seater and about half the price of the DUR, although you'd only be able to buy the basic Reliant (Kore - cargo) currently which is flyable in 2.5.
DUR is in-hangar but its getting a make-over, the updated base freelancer is in-game and you'd get that to fly in the meantime so you'd get to have a nosey around the new and the old.

@mid_gen
Not sure it'd be easier to start from scratch, they've got a nice chunk of ex-Crytek developers who left when they were downsizing, so not only do they know the engine behind the scenes but many of them will have helped out, like tech support, only more hands-on.
Even without Cryteks fate pushing people our way, it'd be even more complicated starting from scratch and they wouldnt have years of experience working with it when problems came up.
They're basically re-writing everything they dont like about CryEngine, rather than starting from scratch and having to write all if it, including the stuff CryEngine does well. They've changed so much already that official updates, many of them wont transfer straight over, if they want to utilise those updates they have to modify them to match their changes. Having ex-Crytek staff must help a lot with that, thats a large part of what the Frankfurt studio does and when problems come up, call em up.

They did actually answer some of those "Why CryEngine?" questions in the last ATV, i think it was...

There are a lot of Unreal Engine fans who are vocal about "It should have been UE" i bet few of them actually know CryEngine to any great extent.
