******Official Star Citizen / Squadron 42 Thread******

Very impressive tech demo. Love the visuals.

Does it support VR?

Not yet, and probably not any time soon either.

I'd imagine its a mixture of complexity and priorities at the moment. IIRC the Cryengine only adds support in v5 and Star Citizen heavily branched when it was at 3.x.x (something like 3.5.8) and they completely rebuilt a lot of the engine to repurpose it for their universe. They've been able to look at official engine updates and transfer parts over with some work to re-sync it to what the 'StarEngine' needs but its not easy.

VR in particular, its a little bit complicated. Most VR games will cheat their backside off, you wont have a body you're just floating eyes, and the games are typically built to be VR friendly and avoid things that arent VR friendly.
They've also put a lot of work into syncing 1st person and 3rd person, identical animations. In first person you're view is exactly where your eyes are, your head exists, you have a body and legs, you're not just floating eyes and arms - if you take that realism, and then apply what VR can do, such as leaning forward and even turning yourself 360 degrees... how is a real model supposed to let you rotate your head 360 and look human to everyone watching you? when you lean forward, does your body stay firm and neck just stretches...

Its a whole load of complications, and the game simply isnt at a point where VR has got to be one of their current priorities. Im sure they're not ignoring it, and they'll be doing things mindful of the complexities and keeping their solutions open to what VR will need, but they're not implementing them yet, just the stuff that is their current priority.

Its a matter of development priorities and the complexities behind it make it something that the need to spend time and effort on rather than something that could be done in a week or 2, as im sure they'd see the benefit of adding it if it was easy, regardless of priority. Its a complex feature, in a game with lots of complex features, and VR sits in that list and they'll get to it whenever they feel its the right time.

good post. you sound like you work for them.

On another note, can't decide what package to get. the $54 Aurora package looks the best I think, SC and SQ42.

I just spend too much time following the progress :D and VR implementation is a regular grumble unfortunately.

You cant really go wrong with the Aurora either, MR or LN. Theres also the benefit of being able to change your mind freely too, if you realise you want something with more bite in a battle, buy an upgrade. Its the perfect place to start and see the game, and hopefully it wont be too long till we can buy items within the mini-PU using game credits, we have basic clothing, armor and FPS weapons, maybe by Easter it'll add places to buy ships too. They'll get wiped from time to time (any IRL purchases like the Aurora will still exist) if they need to rebalance credits etc but as long as it means people can earn ships to try in the PU for a while, i think most people would be happy and it adds encouragement to keep playing in order to access new things to try, which should help development stress testing and bug tracking etc

Jeeze, the Gamescom free-fly ends tonight, they'd normally give it full 10 days (Fri-Mon+1wk) but it seems they've done Wed-Mon which is a bit weak really.

I'm hoping it'll be extended as a couple of friends are interested and only got it downloaded yesterday, we are headed towards another likely free fly in October or November though I guess.

Game looks awesome. But each year it feels like 'give us some more money, the game's coming out soon'. I've invested around $150 so far but cannot shake the feeling that this is a giant ponzi scheme (sort of)

Are you guys still happy with progress - being honest?

Whilst I'd love it to be out by now I've been let down by so many games rushing to release that I'm pretty chilled about the whole thing. I play it several nights a week in its current form and it still needs a lot of work, bucket load more content and a lot of polishing first.

Ponzi scheme? Isn't that paying money back to investors from the new investors they get on board? Not sure backers get anything back from new backers?

I 100% believe this will come out as a working, good game when all is said or done....I try to keep my expectations low, but every year they blow them out the water with new footage that they have been working on.

I also respect that a game like this will take a long time to make (5 years +).....I've been following it from the very start and while its very hard waiting, what feels like forever, id rather them do it right than bring out another Elite or NMS, with are both as shallow as a puddle and wide as an Ocean.

I made the assumption it'd be their usual 10-day thing and was hoping 2.5 would be out, it doesnt make too much difference but i was hoping to get a few or my org guys all online to take a look from time to time and the free-fly just meant they had other options to fly rather than a Aurora/300.

They're a lot better at unpaid access than 99% of these early access titles though, and they do tend to happen 5+ times a year. Sucks that we're still on current 20+gb update patcher and not the new they're working on, cos ~28gb for a nights trial and then another 28gb in October etc gets old quick.

As for progress, if they were being slow and underwhelming, then yeah i might be a bit concerned at the pace of things, but what every single presentation has told me is that what they're working towards is worth the wait, and when its been delivered to the live build it hasnt been dumbed down, it wasnt a false promise, what they'd shown us was real it just wasnt integrated, stable and/or complete. I dont feel like im being misled or fed a lie, and bringing up NMS as a fresh example, they dont avoid a question or give a non-answer like we've often had with the multiplayer question, worst-case they've said they dont know, probably not at launch, or what the intention is. No carefully worded statements and ignoring attempts to clarify it.
Its not flawless development, but it tries to be and its honest about it - thats my feeling anyway.
Estimates seems to be the biggest thing they get wrong.

Thats just a buzz word for people that dont really know what it means, they just associate it with scam and so use it inappropriately :D

Yeah I know, I was being slightly factitious.

I find it strange that anyone would think this is a scam....you could argue a project that has the potential to overcook itself and run out of money before completion, but a scam.....why would somebody employ nearly 300+ people in multiple different countries only to eventually run off with what's left after multiple years of paying all the equipment, wages and other associated costs of running a multinational SMB and producing what is a huge amount of work and systems so far.

Scam it certainly isn't.

I did wonder, just tired of seeing it used wrongly more than anything.

Yeah, and yet theres certainly plenty of people who'll insist it is.
Worst scam artists ever. Given the amount of work they'd have put into the scam, it'd be far more profitable to actually release a game than disappear, let alone deal with its consequences.

That's exactly what I was asking so fair ;)

This and this. You got the context of the comment though which is good. Gold star

Not that it is a ponzi scheme, but this project does have investors.

Really? Who are the investors?

I thought he had investors in the background to compliment his Kickstarter campaign, but didn't need them after receiving the ridiculous money they have raised from backers.

The crowdfunding on Kickstarter was there to prove there was a market to enable him to speak to investors, other than Chris Roberts himself, his wife Sandi and his lawyer friend who watches his back I'm not sure who else has actually invested, the rest of us have effectively thrown money at him.

He didn't have to go out to private investors due to crowdfunding so I suppose it'd only have been those interested very early days.

Just seen a thread on Reddit asking about *reversing* a refund - ie they want back in :D

Seems like the 'goons' who've been sh-posting about Star Citizen over on Some___ Awful have gone a little quiet, some are talking about buying back in and the majority are a little bit stumped by the 3.0 presentation.
Why? Cos of DS. They went as far as making him a moderator (!!) giving him free reign to delete posts and stuff like that, and an position of authority to spout his manure, and they've been rolling around in it like pigs lapping it all up. He's seemingly guaranteed them (presumably by his oh so reliable sources, you know, those with photo IDs that CIG dont make etc) that there isnt any secret builds, what we see is what CIG have, plenty of them have cashed out and after Friday arent too impressed :D :D

They're trying to provoke him within their rules, bait him into kicking off so they have justification to kick him :D:D
What seems to have turned things around are demos of the Mini-PU back in Aug & Oct last year being realised by 2.0-2.4, and now this presentation of what 3.0 will hold, the doubt is being replaced by CIG saying what they'll do, and successfully doing it, and 3.0 pushed them too far.

From their forum:
Summon the Smart
The time of Judgment has come. He Who Shall Not Be Named must face our Space Tribunal.

If found guilty of lies, the Punishment will be banned.
If found not guilty, our Punishment will be Line of Defense.

:D

Seems plenty are on the fence, but the vitriol there is being questioned. They're a fairly toxic lot on the whole either way, and from what i understand their idea of 'fun' doesnt match most players so having them in-game (was likely on some level if they were anti-SC anyway) isnt exactly great news, but if theres some putting money back in and more not being outright abusive and hating on anything SC-related, its likely to be a better situation.
I can also imagine the goons being subjected to org aggression for fun, which probably sits well with them, but generally being bullied for being bullies.

edit - Wouldnt surprise me if they're on a WUM/fishing expedition or something, but sure i'd read a couple of comments (also on reddit) months back from someone who left there (SA) because they're just a bunch of try-hard kids thinking they're cyber anarchists or something.

Two things this fella failed to understand.

#1, Games take years to make.
#2, Internet Trolls exist.

He has no chance of getting a reversal on his refund.

I agree with Agathorn in that, to give this guy a refund reversal is a slap in the face to those who pledged and stuck by that pledge.
