******Official Star Citizen / Squadron 42 Thread******

So is this better than Elite Dangerous? I might join this weekend and wouldn't mind an invite if possible, from what I read I get credits and you get a recruitment point, which I have no idea if it's a fair deal?

It's not better, it's not even nearly complete. Having said that I've 700+ hours in Star Citizen alpha and around 200 hours in Elite since kickstarter..

Very different games, if in doubt just wait on the next free fly event which will probably be in about a month as they just had one - but the anniversary is coming up, Citizencon is coming up so they'll do at least one more before December. :D

Referral wise you just enter someones code (anyone's - mine is STAR-QGRR-WXNV) when creating an account etc here: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/enlist

There's plenty of other people's referal codes on here so feel free to look!

I dont think its unreasonable to say its not better than Elite at the moment, but where SC is heading, its not even in the same ballpark.

Theres just enough in SC at the moment to get a feel for what its capable of, being able to transition between on foot in space stations, space, and EVA in any order, and soon being able to fly down to planets will join that list, at the level of detail its all being done at etc.

But its not a 'game' yet, its parts of one, so theres no progression beyond earning temporary currency and criminal levels. Theres small missions, enough to give a really basic idea what a decent mission would be like (watch the Gamescom demonstration for a better idea for the future), but its not like you'll gain access to new missions, theres no ability to buy new ships or ship items (clothing, fps guns are there). So its still closer to a tech demo IMO, but i also think its an extremely impressive and capable example of a tech demo.

I dont think you'd be disappointed long term, but you might find it a little light on stuff to do if you're looking for a new game to play right away.

You dont need to buy anything to use the referral, just sign up for an account with one and it'll be remembered. They do free-fly weeks from time to time too, so anyone who's registered can give it a go with a few ships accessible and see first hand.

As for if its a fair deal, not really anything to barter about, both parties gain from it and so far this has been the only referral promotion type thing they've done and cant see them doing it differently in the future either. Im waiting on a 5th which unlocks a little buggy and fishtank :D Hoping to hit 10 one day, but 5 is the first nice item IMO.

Thanks for that Paul, I'll let you know if I go for it this weekend or in the next week or 2.

You'll be eligable to buy the Glaive, but only when they're on sale and they haven't been for a long time. 1000 were originally offered for winners of Vanduul Swarm but there were around 3000 given out to various event ticket holders as well on a per account basis, those people still had to beat VS though, no freebies.

The Glaive flies like **** by the way, the only reason I keep mine is because I feel like I earned it by hitting VS until I finally did it myself. It's a shame as it use to fly reasonable well, not great but the latest patch has improved it a little bit I guess. It was $350 if I remember right.

The main guns on it are insanely powerful BUT they overheat faster than any other gun I've seen so you must be very accurate, it's also not a mouse user ship - it can't currently have any of it's weapons swapped as they're built into the chassis and none of them are gimballed.

I made this at the start of the year, it doesn't fly as well now:

Hello, thinking about purchasing SC, but not sure about it.
What can I do in the game so far and what can I not do?
Do I have to pay real cash for new ships/modules or do you earn them as you play along? Finally, is it similar to Elite, or is it a bit more friendlier like Freelancer?

When the game gets released, I understand you'll have a basic starting ship and everything else can be got with either real cash or earned in game...

Finally, is it similar to Elite, or is it a bit more friendlier like Freelancer?
Freelancer was friendly??!!
There were a few nice people about, but the majority of it was dock-camping, dock-raping, gankfesting haxorz...:D

They do Free Fly weeks / week ends, usually about once a month, you get full access and some ships on loan.

If you're not sure you should wait, we just had one about 2 weeks ago the next one 'might' be at the end of the month, or just before or after Citcon which is on the 9'th Oct.

I don't have Elite so couldn't comment but i do know its a similar concept, only 'more'
This is in Alpha, so bug's galore, not much in the way of content at this point.

Its difficult to explain the game, i think the best thing you can do to get a sense of the game is to google youtube for player videos, to see what they do, what its about, problems they have with the game.

Add Alpha 2.4 or Alpha 2.5 into your star citizen search string, they are the latests.

Like....

It's made by the minds behind Freelancer, heck some of them even worked on the game. :)

If you mean Elite: Dangerous I'd say Star Citizen is 10000x more multiplayer and will be at release, don't but this expecting a solo game, if that's what you're after only but Squadron 42 (the solo game). Star Citizen is the multiplayer game which carries on from the solo campaign, essentially you work through the solo game and pop out in the multiplayer universe as a fresh out of the military trader.

Then you go on to do whatever you want !

SH & Vanguard

Looks like they're doing this as a weekly thing - pair 2 top ships of a particular category, let the community try them and then vote on the best, then let people buy it the following week i believe?

Both weeks pairs were limited time sale ships, so not sure what other categories are possible, cos they're sold 24/7 or not flyable. Alien ships are the only other, but what could their pair with the Khartu-Al that wouldnt cause a storm?

Glaive would be fine, it's still a very big call for people to throw money at it. I'd sell mine but I felt like I earned the damn thing! You are right though plenty of dummies would be spat out..

Blade? might be too soon..
