******Official Star Citizen / Squadron 42 Thread******

So many games currently have better graphics.

The latest cod springs to mind. That is a master piece.

And metro exodus too

A few games do yeah, like COD but these are limited instances. I don't agree all that much with Metro but that game really bombed compared to what I was hoping for after liking rest of series.

But it's all well and good comparing those sort of games which have very limited play area or player count, but the point is scaling that up and taking it to the next level.

I think the textures for planets are pretty poor still mind and repetitive, even worse in V4 than previous versions, but then much better than say NMS or ED which are games of scale/player count side.

The textures on ships for materials seem off rather often though, at least the external hull materials that look flat and plastic like. But the detail with POM and how they have done that across so much is impressive as is the detail at POI.

Cities look bland compared to those of say what we've seen of Cyberpunk or ant GTA but that is trade off with time and scale. Making Loeville, Area 18 and New Babbage truly feel complete and alive etc is so far off it's frustrating.

I haven't played CoD, but Metro can look quite bad, it really depends on the scene. I wouldn't say is a good example in terms of textures and details. In some parts, without the RT looks worse than previous Metro games...

The only truly bad textures (in SC), were from up close on a random relatively small asteroid.

What does look bad is the lack of shadows of some of the tress depending on the height (look like shadows are disabled), sometimes a bit far away texture seem to load load all the way and , of course, a lot of pop ins. Hopefully all solvable after the Vulkan conversion.

A thing to keep in mind, high textures quality (4k), for every asset will take a lot of vRAM, RAM and transfers speeds on the SSD. Not all players have the latest and greatest. Don't forget about that as well.

LE: Jump and played a little bit of BFV... to me, what I've played seemed a bit worse...

The scope of SC is so far beyond a generic a-b fps game that the comparison doesn't make much sense. Especially since one is out and SC is far from it.
Watching those Digital Foundry videos I take my hat off to them for what they're trying to achieve. Some very clever stuff going on. If they can pull it off it'll be something. It'll mean they can churn out entire persistent worlds very quickly.
Even if they don't I'm sure what they've learnt can be adapted for other future games.
It is basically a tech demo at the moment but it seems to be coming together now. They just need to make sure the world galaxy they create is actually fun to be in...

They won't though because its a scam.

After you go in the ship it looks like a door simulator game lol.

Tho does look cool the visuals. I like the realism of the style of textures vs say x4 visually styles in their ships tho the detail isnt massively that different tho the lighting is.

Those are detachable cargo pods, the doors are to isolate them from eachother. :)

By the time this comes out you could just fly yourself to Mars.

I invested 35 quid in this almost a decade ago. How ridiculous haha.

All I want is Squadron 42. Could not care less about Star Citizen at this point as I do not think I would ever the time to play it the way that I would want.

The longer this whole thing goes on the less chance the original people will actually give a crap about it.

Thing is, a lot of people would have ordered it in 2013 like I me and since then they probably forged careers, developed a relationship or had children lol. A lot happens in 7 years and priorities change. Their dreamy ambition was initially amazing to me.

7 years later and I really doubt I have time to commit to this thing. Truth is though, it's likely to be 10years in production and still an unfinished scam.

I still don't get how much salt the Dev time is causing. Cyberpunk, beyond good and evil 2, red dead redemption 2 all taken at least 8/9 years to develop also. Nobody seems to have the same issues there for them.

for me the issues are many.
1) its not about how objectively long the game is taking...... imo it is because the game was meant to come out in 2014...... delays happen but a 6 year delay is taking the cake a bit. historically how many games which have such a delay actually end up being all that good? am sure there are examples but far more examples end up being a mess. Just how many times will the developers scrap a load of code which was spent ages on, only to start again?.

2) The scope of the game has completely changed from the game i backed........ all i wanted was a spiritual successor to wing commander but with coop PvE (in S42) and to privateer but with optional multiplayer with a PvP slider (in SC).... the game is no longer anything like that and the coop PvE is no longer going to be in S42.

3) private servers... something i thought would be vital for this game, esp after seeing what happens in ED in some places... CIG are STILL selling a guide for setting up private servers and modding tutorials for when the game launches - and yet i have heard that CIG have now stated such features are very low down the priority (so then why still selling the guide?) (link added below because normally I get lambasted for this claim with people telling me moddng and private servers was NEVER a feature)
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/Add-Ons/Engineering-Manual-For-Modders-Digital

4)..... VR - a huge hook for me and one of the stretch goals, but it was clear very early on the game does every VR no no in the book....... I doubt SC will ever support VR myself.

5) 100 hand curated systems (not planets) on launch...... and yet they have only *just* managed to finish 1...... I highly doubt the game will have 25, let alone 100 systems at launch....

for better or for worse i am in it till the end, (because my refund request was refused)... but SC as it is now is not the game i backed, its not the game i wanted and TBH I thing people are completley justified in thinking it may ultimately be a cashgrab which never releases. i really hope those poeple are wrong however.

I will try and find the link but I read a pretty damning article written by one of the developers of star citizen...
