Will any ship upgrades be retained?
Nope. This is a partial account reset, items and money are being reset to your accounts defaults with reputation being retained. Although you'll need to redo any licence missions to unlock things such as npc bounties. Item wise, if it doesn't appear in your "My Hanger" on the website you won't have it at the reset. They've mentioned that some money will be given back to people depending on how much they've done but it's very vague still.

What I should have said is if you have any ships in My hanger, that you subsequently put better guns/shields etc on, will you go back to the default fittings?

So really right now best you can do is just go out and do missions and have some fun. Don't think about earning and upgrading, just not worth it until after the reset.
Yes I think a bit of playing around and getting the mechanics down will take me until the update. Just the sheer volume of information takes a while to absorb.

Reputation is being carried over, so that's a nice plus at least. I'm not at the higher ranks yet myself but they pay out more reward money.
Is reputation tide to each planet/area? Either that or mine is resetting every time i log in but i think im starting off at different areas so my history doesn't show any completed missions at the current place i am tide to.

Likewise I've done a lot of hopping around to different areas doing jobs all around. I think its tied to jurisdiction/faction. I've mostly been working round the Microtech planet and I have noticed that my Rep there has started to climb, slowly mind, but it has raised. Dropped into the negative slightly in Hurston due to some early issues working out who the enemy was on bunker missions... Microtech isnt my home planet but I think that is where I will be working out of predominantly after the wipe.

Visited Orison yesterday for the first time. What an experience that place is! The atmosphere and ambiance there is truly mind blowing, from the architecture to the music, even down to the little details like the cherry blossom blowing across the communal areas.

Just had a bit of a play. More or less got the taking off and landing bit sussed. Lots of stuff going on though, air traffic control, getting annoyed you're blocking a hanger. The realising I need a drink, working out how to take off my helmet  I'll be glad once I've got all this basic stuff sorted. Got Game Glass set up, very handy.

Yeah rep is tide to specific factions at locations. Here is a list of them

They're all tied to areas but some serve multiple. I've generally been staying in one area to grind the rep up but I do jump around. Bounty missions higher rep gets you harder targets etc. so I feel it's worth sticking it out a little bit.

Hurston Security is Hurston, BlacJac is ArcCorp, RedWind (semi legal) is ArcCorp and Hurston etc.

Is this game worth trying yet? or is it better to experience it through videos and screenshots?
Depends on your tolerance for bugs and the learning curve. I'm pretty new to it, and although there is a lot to know and workaround, it is very impressive. It's far from being a finished game though. I would say you don't so much play it, you experience and test it.

That's almost impossible to answer, the game is huge, its unique, its beautiful.

Its also complex, there is very little in the way of hand holding so the learning curve is very steep and you will find it frustrating, its also riddled with bugs, which you will find equally frustrating, but if you can bear it, if you have a high tolerance for it and a lot of patience it can be very rewarding.

The developers are trying to do something that no one else would dare due to cost and complexity, they don't have the backing of a wealthy publisher, what they have for funding is us, so the game must be open and playable as its being developed, the result of that is its a very unfinished and unpolished game.

I think what i would say is this, if you don't mind all of that and want to experience it through its development, sure, go for it, but even that is subjective, you may just not like it full stop, if what you're looking for is a polished game then steer well clear of this, you have to have a high tolerance for it frankly being broken at times and its a good thing be quite nerdy.

If you haven't got a game package and are on the fence... watch videos as you've suggested and perhaps wait until the next free fly event to get a taster... If you have a package already just log in and try it, its fun with others but has its moments and problems as you'd expect from a game in active development with gameplay loops not working. Note that the server performance is quite lacking generally right now until server meshing comes on stream in 4.0 which will allow for multiple servers to run the game universe fully synced.
