*****Official Star Wars: The Old Republic Thread*****

Still dont understand this after reading it a number of times?

I'm not sure either, I am guessing that when you are grouped there are conversations with npcs or something and you can "win" these conversations and thereby earn the social points. Not sure how you win a conversation though, maybe by saying the "right" things or something.

Basically when grouped, and you get a number of conversation options with an npc (a la Dragon Age), everyone picks their own one, and one player's response is picked as the one to be used.

If it's your one, you get points. Looks to be a way to encourage you to grind missions over and over, if such a thing is possible.

Edit - it's not a race, it's picked randomly I think.

Edit 2 - what if everyone picks "c: of course we'll rescue the princess!" does everyone get the points? Or does it still pick one of the respondees randomly? Weird system.

Any idea how it picks which one gets used? Is it just random?

EDIT : ah, just saw your edit :D

Hmm, sounds like you may be doing the convo over and over again till you get your reply selected.

No, i've already explained, nearly all of you are massively miss informed and are claiming the sky is falling before you have even played / understood the game.

Doubts are fine, express them and move on. Don't just go "this game will fail lol" *goes back to running around the dalaran fountain*

For example the people who claim this is a single player game, so sadly sadly miss informed.

And how are so you so much more well informed than anyone else? Or is it just blind hope.

Calm down, chill out, relax. People are passing their opinion on the game about what they have heard so far and what they have seen. I don't think (though I could be wrong) that anyone in this thread has just said "this game will fail lol" we are discussing the feedback that beta testers are providing.

Also why does everyone who expresses a doubt have to be a WoW fanboy? I'm pretty sure Tombstone hates WoW :p

I haven't really noticed too much of that in this thread really. It seems more the case of people saying that since the SP stories are really well developed, that they'll play the game for the SP *at the very least* and the MMO bit is gravy.

Thats what I have been trying to say. I wanted KOTOR 3 not an mmo so I will play the single player aspect when it is cheaper/free trial and if the mmo part happens to be good I might stick with it. But so far listening to beta testers nothing has really made me think this is worth playing over any other mmo that is currently on the market.

The game will be a massive success because it carries Biowares name and Star Wars name, I am assessing whether its the right MMO for me, not the right MMO for every person on the planet.

For me, Tombstone sums up this game from what he said above! Biowares name and Star Wars name I dont think I have played one bad Bioware game(IMO)

Same as me, i'm not in a hurry for another MMO because LoTRO is doing a fantastic job so far with drawing me into the game, very immersive. I'll keep an eye on TOR and see how the support for the game goes once it has been released.

You won't have a choice! You're in a group, only one answer gets picked and then the instance moves on. What would be the point otherwise?

I'm guessing they're different outcomes for each possible reply? If so, i don't like the idea that i'd have to play out the instance differently to the way i want it to turn out.

Hehe, I dont hate it, when I played it I found it to be a decent game, a great starter MMO for people new to the genre, just not quite the kind of MMO that I love and it didnt tick the boxes for the veteran MMOer in me.

(I did hate the community though :D )

Certainly hope so. It will make group instances a lot more interesting if it happens to pick the one guy in the party who chooses "D: Sod the princess, I'm just here for the loot!"

I'd be looking to pick option "E: Forget the silly rescue, turn coat and kill everyone in the room instead of saving them and embrace the power and loot" , would be damned funny watching the rest of the group if it picked my choice :D

You'd get the following responses:

'wtf!'
'FFUUU!'
'wut!?'
'nub'

Then you'd get flamed.

The sad thing is, this kind of FFA gameplay style just doesnt wash in todays MMO's. For every one guy who'll do this, you have four other guys way more interested in the phat l3wt or the achieve or the xp. Its simple economics to not allow it. I suppose they kind of tried it in the ghost town that is darkfall, turns out its not that fun being pk'd by super high level players.

Id love to see a truly experimental MMO that had free form, perhaps insta death, but you have to say that if youre after the big bucks you go the safer route of mass appeal. The truly novel stuff always has to struggle to survive.

Pity though, how else am I supposed to do a surprise turn to the darkside !

I'm one of those odd people who actually finds it surprisingly fun being pk'd. Its interesting that I can remember the names of the people who pk'ed me in UO , even now, almost 15 years later (most notably, ROMEO, Stan the Man and Ben Bolt-thrower) more vividly than I can remember the names of the people who I interacted with who didnt pk me. But yes you're correct, the big bucks are definitely with the mass appeal crowd. Shame though as so many MMOs which are about "war" and "conflict" and enemies fighting each other actually have very little war or conflict about them. But thats a whole other discussion :)

Christ, you keep trying to accuse people of WoW Fanboism, yet all I see in your posts is a massive TOR Fanboi, who is so massively massively overhyped by this game that it is never going to live up to incredibly unrealistic expectations.

People are raising very valid points, yet you refuse to listen to any of it, I mean the game looks extremely linear and it looks INCREDIBLY solo orientated, yet you wont listen to any of it, the most uninformed person in this thread reading through it is you.

It seems some people want every MMO release to be their perfect MMO, and if it isn't, the game deserves to get a lot of stick.

This is, and always has been, touted as a story-driven, theme park MMO. Your character has an "epic" storyline which was always going to provide a linear path for you to follow - it's mostly similar to single player RPGs that will have one main storyline and many side-quests you can partake in, as well as the standard theme park MMO dungeon runs, group quests, world / battleground pvp and endgame content. Personally I think there is a place in the market for an MMO that puts story above all else, and it could potentially revolutionise the genre in that manner, so the claims that it's just a revamped WoW-clone in the Star Wars universe seem a little unfair.

If you want endless sandbox freedom, play something else. This game never claimed it was going to be the next SWG, so don't criticize it because it isn't. It is what it is, and although this is only an assumption from what I've seen and heard so far, it looks like it's going to do what it does to a very high standard.

I feel I'm simply past the days where an MMO will offer me a second life. I'm not hoping that SW:TOR or GW2 will take over my life as WoW did, and as UO, SWG, DAoC, EvE have for other people. I just want a game that I can have fun with and play for a long time, and this seems like it will provide that.
