no, in your opinion he isnt worth it. however froma pure P&L side of things, if he sold 80 millions worth of incremental shirts with names on and makes the money back then he clearly is worth it...

He was worth 80m to Real Madrid and I suppose that's what matters. If he makes Real Madrid more money than he cost then it's good business. From a football p.o.v only it's hard to justify any transfer over £20m though when prize money for tournaments isn't that much, but you also have to consider that some fans will happily pay for their season ticket just to see Ronaldo in the flesh.

I hope now that we don't carry on with the Schwarzer thing. We made a bid, Fulham apparently say he's not for sale and that should be that. Otherwise we're no better than Barca. Eww.

Barca and Real do it to English clubs each summer, my thinking's on the same lines as heavy simulators and cheats etc.; can't beat 'em, join 'em.

If he's the only one we can seemingly get a decent price then badger him up.

I couldn't disagree more. Alonso's a very good footballer but he's a luxury player; he didn't offer enough going forward nor was he good enough defensively. Playing Alonso meant you had to play both Gerrard and Masch or else the side would be lacking in 1 area.

I said the same thing when they were both Liverpool players too; Masch is far more important and imo far more valuable (we reportedly demanded £50m for him last summer) so if we got £30m+ for Alonso, I'd expect we'd demand at least that if not more for Masch.

Not convinced about Schwarzer myself, yes age isn't such a factor when it comes to keepers but he turns 38 in a few months and lets be honest how many GENUINE TOP CLASS keepers have you seen in their 40s? I mean like in the history of the Premiership how many clubs playing in the Champions League have been consistently fielding keepers in their 40s? Even the likes of Seaman and Schmeichel (two of the best keepers in the 90s) had stopped playing CL and left Arsenal/MU before they hit 40.

I'm just annoyed we didn't buy Given or Friedel all those years ago (2003 or so).

In my book recruiting a centrehalf should be the #1 priority, I'm not convinced Djourou is good enough yet to be starting every week.

If Schwarzer's a stop-gap for a big signing next season, that's OK by me. He's a good keeper, better than Almunia/Fabiankski any road, and perhaps the economic situation will be better in a year's time or Arsene has his eyes on someone who has an expiring contract then, who knows!

but where does "football p.o.v" start and stop?

Its never been "just " about whats between the white lines of the pitch - as even when the players of the 50's were paid £3 a week or whatever they were still idolised (perhaps even more so), and fans were attracted to how cool a player was off the pitch as much as on it.

And while it has no direct corrolation - what about international performances. Obviously this could be better or worse than your club ones , but just because you play well for one doesnt automatically mean you will play as well with the other team. Yet even from year dot a player's visibility and attraction to a "better" club are still about international performances more than the bread and butter of any league game

(Im not disputing at all that £80m is extreme for one player - I dont think anyone will argue that, but undoubtedly DBeckham was worth the "tiny" £25m all those years ago just as CR7 is worth £80m for his profile and ability now - havent RM already made enough profit from the deal to counter-act the transfer cost (if that story was true then its undoubtedly worth paying that huge fee)

Eh?

There's no rules, I just feel that figures over £20m being thrown around for a footballer to play for a certain team is crazy and should not be allowed. Even £20m is far too much

Welcome to free market capitalism, goods are worth what people are prepared to pay for them.

Well Rafa wants Tevez 'reportedly' :[....Its very doubtful.....I just hope hes not lured by Champs League......
on another note i hope Robinho has a top world cup so we can get rid of him after....the way he has treated us as a club is disgraceful and disrespectful considering how much money we have spent on him....32.5m+£160,000 every week...

As mentioned, its a business and you cant suddenly say that no player can cost more than £20 million. If they are paying more than that it is because they are making money from competitions, advertising, merchandise and tv rights. Who would take all the money if they didnt spend much on players ?

That's the thing with the stupid transfer market of today.

Milner is not worth £28 million. Probably anywhere between £10-£15 tops. But the crazy world we live in means people slap stupid price tags on them and then along come some stupid Saudi's or rich Russian and pay it.

Hilarious and ridiculous (I dont mean to single you out, as lots of people have said similar things, but your post highlights it perfectly). People need to wrap their heads around the fact that the transfer market has moved on. Players demand higher transfer fees now, it really is simple supply and demand which has been exacerbated by the fact that more clubs have big money available.

Is that really the case though?

How many teams in the premiership can afford to spend 30m on one player? I'd wager it's 3 at best, how many top teams in Europe could afford 30m for 1 player? Real & Barca of course but not sure the likes of Inter or Bayern would

So in truth selling clubs need to wrap their head around the fact that just because a club like Madrid spent 80m on Ronaldo that doesn't mean every top player is worth similar

If Fabregas goes for 40m and he's one of the best midfielders in the world then to suggest that Milner is only 10m away from being as good is a joke

Yes it is.

Dont get me wrong, it doesnt mean everyone is now worth astronomical amounts of money, but the market has shifted quite significantly due to the fact there are now more teams with money to spend wanting to sign top players. Personally I would say Fabregas for £40m would be a bargain.

Heh, welcome to the world of money grabbing mercenaries. To be fair also, it wouldn't be a bad thing if he went. I never was impressed by him at Real and he was nothing more than a stop gap signing.
