Wow, your perceptions of some of the Arsenal players differ from mine a lot drunkenmaster. But I don't want to get into a debate about that - can't be bothered with an essay war!

But of course I agree we need at least two more CBs before the season starts. Song can play CB but some of his tackling is best done outside of the area. I honestly don't think we need a new keeper (Schwarzer for Almunia? C'mon..). I think after our defence has stocked up, we'll have all our bases covered and should have a good shot at some silverware this season.

I agree. I dont fancy having Song as a cover for CB though. I would welcome a WORLDCLASS keeper but I would prefer two worldclass (Or even average solid) CB's.

Manchester City's new midfield signing Yaya Toure says that one day he would like to return to Barcelona, the club he just left to join City on a reported £200,000-a-week contract.

Poor City - Maybe one day someone will join City because they want to and not for their deep filled pockets. Shameful really.

But World Class = lots of £ and that isn't Wenger's style. I think our record transfer is Arshavin at £15 million, Wenger has just bought Koscielny for something like £2 million and Chamakh on a free transfer plus whatever signing bonuses he gets. We need a new GK but if we don't get one in this window it won't be the end of the world. I'm far more concerned about our defensive situation, we need to sign a CB immediately, we've got Koscielny signed up more or less but losing 3 veteran CB's and replacing them with 1 unproven CB doesn't make sense.

Oh and Arsenal's USA store are selling Chelsea baby booties. hah.

I thought Koscielny cost about £8.5m? As they were holding out for £10m.

There is still a chance that campbell will signup again for a year. Real shame Gallas is leaving though but maybe the atmosphere at the club will be better without him.

Wenger did say though that he is prepared to spend big if needed for the defence. And I think our situation does class as "needed".

We are monitoring some Germany CB arent we? Two international CBs would do nicely. Each about £10m

The longer we have Levy the better. I dread the day we end up with the likes of Gilette and Wilkinson Sword.

shouldn't that be Gillette and Damocles Sword?!

Yes, that's a greek myth based pun. Booyah.

I agree with the calls saying Arsenal need to sign at least two more centre halves.
Arne Friedrich, the Centre-back for Germany, his team Hertha Berlin got relegated last season. Surely we could snap him up relatively cheaply, rather than his partner in the national side, who we have been linked with, the error-prone-beanpole that is Mertesacker.
Trouble is we're in an awkward position, we need to sign centre-halves for cover, because we are losing our veterans, but that means we can't buy top quality players; presumably the two starting berths are already filled by Koscielny and Vermaelen.
So, yeah we're scrounging around for someone's experienced cast-offs again...

Oh, and the Best Player in the world is injured http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/a/arsenal/8792026.stm
Terrible Shame.
or is that shamefully terrible... I just don't know.

Atmosphere's don't get better as the best players leave while the other players have only signed contracts after being promised of the clubs commitment to bring in better players and challenge for silverware, it gets worse. RVP, Fabregas, and I'm sure Arshavin and a few others only came or signed new contracts because Wenger promised a real push for silverware and to bring in new players. Basically he's lied to RVP particularly, we haven't signed players, we've signed a couple of players to replace ones we've sold, no squad strengthening.

Schwarzer would be completely pointless and very expensive, 4+mil, 1+mil signing bonus, an increase in his wage and he's probably at or abouve 40k a week, and he'll probably retire after one season. Lloris, 15mil, get either 15 years out of him, or sell him for 10-20mil depending on how good he is in 5 years if it doesn't work out, 8mil for one season of Fulhams goalkeeper or a chance at getting a really world class keeper in the future, which would cost less per season. Fact is we'd just be going through the same process in a season if we got Schwarzer, waste of time. I'm using Lloris as an example, he looked poo at the world cup, but so did the whole french squad.

We had two world class CB's in defence last season and still lost games, our defence as a whole didn't work, but thats from front to back, the system wasnt' working, our wingers weren't covering, our DM's weren't good enough and in particular DIaby, Denilson were incredibly poor trying to defend, if you rate Song or not, we largely played in a system that required one player to drop deep and defend on either side and at least one of them was completely useless at doing it.

For all those that rate Song, I find it hard that you can argue that he was woeful in every big important game, considering if we'd manage to not concede against the top 4 we'd have been 1-2 points off winning, and had we won all those games we'd have won with a massive gap. If Song is useless, and I do mean completely useless in the big games, in Europe, in the league, in the cups, then how good can he really be?

Yup, be an Arsenal fan and mock Bendtner, he scored and setup goals in the Barca games, 98% of our squad didn't, he also scored and setup goals in the world cup, RVP has a single goal, not sure anyone else has done anything, but sure, lets have a go at 24 starts, 14 goals 6 assists Bendtner of last season, because those are truly awful stats right.

I might have a go at Song, who marked Drogba in the Chelsea game and took his eyes off him as Drogba strolled to the back post to score, and repeated that in many games, while the team conceded loads of goals, with his job being the defence of the team. But I don't have a go at bendtner, with a misfiring midfield, scoring 14 goals, some of them hugely important, in 24 starts which is better than most of the league managed.

Bendtner also played injured a lot this season, and played injured in all his World Cup games, and still performed and provided goals and assists, I find it very hard to criticise a player who plays injured, unlike the Kewell's of the world, and performs, and gets a hard time from the fans and has a single bad game all season.

Bendtner did well in the last few months of last season, hopefully he'll get over the injury and it won't be one of those niggling ones that keeps coming back. For what it's worth he's still young and improving.

Bendtner isn't great but he's nowhere near as bad as people make out, a more effective player than the likes of Berbatov and he's a kid who cost £50k

Come on be serious  How can you comment on other Arsenal fans complaining about Arsenal players when most of your comments all last season are depressing attacks on virtually every player in our squad including the manager. Except your special untouchables, Eboue, Bendtner, Gallas

I am only one of about three Arsenal fans on here that like Bendtner but he certainly doesnt help his cause when he keeps saying he is the best striker in the world when he obviously isnt. Hopefully he comes good this year as I am sure we will be relying upon him again.

Try and be supportive of Arsenal this season :D

From today

Bendtner said:
“I still feel quite bad in my groin. Sadly it hasn’t been better during my holiday, like I expected it to giving it nothing but rest. And that worries me a lot," the Dane told The Daily Mirror.

"I had hoped, and counted on, that a total break from football and training would heal the injury, but it hasn’t happened.

"I have spoken to Arsenal throughout the holiday and I am having to do a big scan when I return this week.

"My whole body must be scanned to find out where the groin problem really comes from.

"I still feel pain, and it is very frustrating. I don’t know where I am in *relation to playing *football.

"It doesn’t feel good at all. Some *mornings I can hardly get out of bed.

"It is not the best way to return to Arsenal like this, but the club and I have to get to the bottom of my problem now."

:(:(:(

Injury crisis starting pre-season this time around, although it sorta did last year with Nasri breaking his leg

I agree with you to an extent. I like Bendtner and I've always thought he'd turn out to be useful, if he can overcome this injury I think he'll be essential next season with the extra attacking dimension that he affords us. I have to agree with DM on Song though. Overall I think he was a good player but he cost us when it meant the most. Against the top sides it's hard when you've got someone who gives away free kicks in stupid areas because of his clumsiness, he needs to work on his man marking as well but I think these mistakes are just a highlight of his youthfulness, he'll overcome them if he's coached properly.

LOL @ the special untouchables :D

jakeke, did you get that from Arseblog this morning?

If what I've read is true then he had a bit of a falling out with the Dutch management as well. Could be good for us if he's benched, it's a good job France were knocked out early as well considering our large continental contingent. :D

Excellent.

Was going to say I was looking forward to Spain being knocked out now, but there's still at least another two matches for all 4 semifinalists.

Edit- of course, Arseblog. Must remember to add him to my list of 'news' tabs at some point.

Edit 2 - is his site down?

Indeed, hopefully Spain will get knocked out next. Yep Arseblog, cracking blog and he often links to other blogs and bloggers which is handy, also usually contains a fair few links to articles as well as his podcast every Friday. :)

Yeah looks like the site is down at the moment, it was up an hour or two ago so hopefully it should be back up and running soon. I know you're not a fan of social networking but he's on Twitter as well. :p
