It's naive to criticise Wenger for not replacing Fabregas if and when he goes (he hasn't even left so it's even crazier). Ferguson replaced Ronaldo with .. Valencia. It doesn't work like that unfortunately, especially not any more. I think it's clear and has been clear for a few months that spending is slowing down dramatically besides the likes of Chelsea, City, Real. Soon you'll be seeing a lot more managers doing the same things everybody has been criticising Wenger for the last 5 years, hopefully then this childish 'success now' attitude will cease to exist and people will realise that football clubs need to be sustainable businesses first or everybody is going the way of Portsmouth. It had to stop some time and I feel we're getting there now.

The way football has been heading recently is rotten in my opinion and I'm tired of the attitude of most fans regarding money and football and the constant ill feeling towards Wenger for not spending as much as others, surely that has to be lauded not laughed at? He's steered the club to becoming a financial monster (one of the most valuable sporting clubs in the world) from being something not resembling that at all and he's only done that by being sensible, not by indulging in the beliefs of stupid and short sighted fans. But that's why he's a massively successful football manager and gets paid very well for his ideas I suppose

YEH BUT THEY HAVNT WON A EURO CUP LULZ.

Good post by the way. :)

Looks like Masch's inevitable depature is edging closer. He returned to pre-season training today and is reported to have told Hodgson he wants to leave.

As I said earlier in the thread, if he's not going to sign a new deal then we've got to cash in on him now and hopefully use that money to improve the squad overall.

Firstly it's very debatable that all the money raised will be reinvested and secondly our transfer targets are still being identified by the scouting team Benitez left. It's become very clear that Hodgson has been brought in as nothing more than a coach.

Ah I didn't realise Hodgson wasn't choosing the targets.

There don't seem to be many Spurs fans posting in here other than myself and Stag but here's some related 'news' anyway...

Sevilla striker Luis Fabiano insists he is going nowhere this summer, despite speculation linking him with a host of clubs.

AC Milan and Tottenham have already expressed their interest in Luis Fabiano and the Brazil international reportedly claimed he would love a move to the Rossoneri or Manchester United.

Chelsea were also thought to have made enquiries but the 29-year-old insists he will still be a Sevilla player when the Copa del Rey winners kick of f the season in the Supercopa de Espana against Barcelona next month.

"During my time at the World Cup I was very calm because I knew that I was going to stay at Sevilla," Luis Fabiano told the club's radio station. "Much was said but nothing true.

"I couldn't talk because I was with the Brazil team but I have a year left on my contract with Sevilla and I am very happy.

"I really want to defend once again the Sevilla badge and I would love to help lift a trophy in August."

Spurs have been linked with everyone lately. Apparently Akinfeev as well now, funny how that story only came to light after the Arsenal linkage to him though. From the article it seemed he would like to move to London, saying that Arshavin sold it to him quite well. Apparently Juve are also interested but he doesn't like the idea of playing in Italy.

I completely disagree with this. Hodgson selects targets, Purslow negotiates with them.

I can imagine Hodgson re-evaluating Rafa's transfer targets and ditching or proceeding with the ones he feels will add quality to the squad. I don't however feel that Hodgson is merely a coach and things are being dictated to him on who he should or shouldn't sign by the clubs hierarchy.

I also think if Masc was to be sold, Hodgson would receive pretty much all the money from the transfer to reinvest in the squad.

Did Hodgson target Cole? No, we made Cole an offer before Hodgson took the job. Did Hogson target Wilson or Jovanovic? No, both deals were all but agreed while Benitez was manager.

Did Hodgson sanction the sales of Benayoun or Insua (possibly Riera too but nothing to confirm that)? No, talks to sell both began both Hodgson took over.

There is absolutely no evidence to suggest that Hodgson has any control over our transfer dealings and plenty to suggest he doesn't. Will Hodgson have somekind of involvement in players we're bringing in? I'm sure he will but he's not the man making the final decision.

And you're incredibly naive if you're so certain that all the money that's raised from transfers will be reinvested into the squad. Since January '09 we've made a profit of close to £40m on transfers (before Insua); if all the money raised from sales hasn't been reinvested over the last 18 months, what makes you think it will be now? Are we suddenly better off?
