We're pretty well covered for defenders.

CB - King, Gallas, Dawson, Kaboul, Bassong, Woodgate. 6 senior CBs lol, though Woodgate is a 50/50 for retirement and everyone knows King can only play 1 game a week. Even so, Gallas, Dawson, Kaboul and Bassong are a pretty good quartet without the top class sicknotes.

RB - Corluka, Hutton, Naughton, Walker. You can argue that we could improve on Corluka as he lacks a bit of pace, but I think he is a quality player and still only 24? Naughton and Wilson both look quality for the future.

LB - Ekotto, Bale, Gallas and Naughton. In 2 seasons time I can see Bale being the preferred choice here.

There are arguments for better quality, but I think we have a great mix of experience and potential to see us through this campaign quite comfortably.

Fabiano would be a great signing though, and be a serious step up from Keano, who I still love but I don't think he's quite got the edge he used to.

Not sure if its beeen picked up on here yet but Newcaslte have transfer listed Taylor.

Hes demanding 60k a week to stay at the club

I'm a Newcastle fan and hes a decent player but 60k decent? No. Hes another Woodgate/King player (not that skillful, nowhere near) in that you get a few good games before he is injured again.

I don't know what he expects as no one in the top 10 are going to want him and even if they do he won't get anywhere near 60k. Mug.

Mate of mine summed it up perfect on his facebook.

Steven Taylor, true Geordie through and through playing 4 his hometown club and possibly a future captain n wants more money to play 4 us, well this is a messgae from whitey and the toon army **** u u gready*******!!!!!!!!!!!

He's nearly 30, would cost a bomb, would demand a big wage, would need time to adapt to life in the Premiership and England and can't play in the group stage of the Champions League because he's cup-tied. Might as well try and resign Kanoute.

The thing is we need goals, a player of his calibre this season could mean the difference between us holding onto 4th and slipping into 5th.

The amount of chances our midfield are making I don't think he'd have trouble adapting and a week ago there was a rule change so he won't be cup tied if we play him in the CL. ;)

i think if bale continues his development and get more eperince his will be a left winger. always thought he was a left back but i dot think hell be pushed back to that positio now seeing as how well hes done at left mid

exactly what SAF wanted to do 2 seasons ago, but Bale wanted to join Spurs as a defender - really glad he is coming good, he had an attrocious time (with the run of playing in defeats for Spurs) really glad he is showing the promise seen while at Southampton

Depends who Spurs sign, but having Modric left wing and Bale overlapping from full back is a potent option. Bale can literally run all game, he is the definition of the modern attacking full back.

he too slow and not skillful enough im afraid...

he is more a workaday battle his was through via hustle and bustle than skill/fleet of feet... or so it seemed to me.

he is a makeshift left wing imo but is doing well there at the mo.

He's not a lightning fast winger, but he's anything but slow. As for him not possessing the skill or fast feet, you really need to watch him more.

:p

i dunno he looked a bit clumsy last night i know it was wet, but lets be fair Y BSC are underpar opposition and hm...

hes not slow in an absolute sense but he doesnt have the pace of say, lennon....he has strength however, more of a barreling winger than a quick footed one..

Harry said in an interview at the weekend after the Stoke game, that he sees Bale ending up as a full-back eventually. I think it's still available on the BBC website. Terrific in either position tbh.

Still no news on Squillaci, which I find a little bit strange, I would have thought we'd get a confirmation by now... Not long left in this window and I still don't want to give up hope of us signing a goalie too. I swear our negotiating never used to be so drawn-out when we had Dein wheeling and dealing!
