You also mentioned he needs more than 1 good season, he has, he hasn't had many high goal scoring seasons but that doesn't mean he hasn't been good, there is more to football than goals!

There's just got to be a joke about Arsenal fans and not caring about the end product but I can't think of a suitable wording. :p

I'd agree though, Rooney is a great player and certainly one of the ten best at his position in the World irrespective of the World Cup. It'll be interesting to see how he performs in the coming season now though.

Rooney certainly is a great player, but as for lots of players being better than him, it depends entirely on what you want from a player. He's not a goal sniffer, there's lots of players better than him at that. He's not an attacking midfielder, there's lots of players better than him at that. He's very important to manyoo though.

Villa, Messi, Drogba, Ronaldo and Eto'o are the five best fowards in the world for me

I would put Rooney slightly behind them, on a par with the likes of Torres, Milito, Fabiano, Tevez, Higuain, Aguero, Forlan, Muller, etc.

He's undoubtedly a great player, but he does appear to have a tendency to have prolonged barren spells, which I would suggest is not a trait shared by the very best.
I think he's a very rounded footballer, he's very good at lots of things whereas many other strikers tend to be exceptional at a few things and poorer at the rest of the game. Milito for instance is a much better finisher, but perhaps not as good at passing or shooting from distance.

I don't know what to make of the Rooney of this summer, because honestly you wouldn't have ranked him in the top 100 strikers in world football if you were basing it on his performance at the World Cup, but it was clearly out of character and he must have been at ~80% fitness or something.

For me there are still issues with his attitude. People say he's a genius because of what he can do with the ball at his feet and I don't dispute that, but for me he lacks a bit of guile and patience to think about what he needs to do differently when things aren't going his way and he has hit a bad patch.

I see it like this:
1-Messi
2-Rooney,Villa,Tevez,Torres,Drogba,Forlan
3-Higuain,Eto'o,Milito,Aguero,
4-Ronaldo
Rooney is a good player and has been solid for a few years then last year he exploded but still got outscored by Drogba who doesnt even take penalties :/ but still had a great season and his world cup wasnt his best...

No Ronaldo!?

The reason I put Villa, Drogba and Eto'o ahead of Rooney is that their scoring records are just so good.

Rooney has had one good goal-scoring season. He needs to score ~30 goals for the next 4 seasons in a row to prove he is on the same level. That's not to say he can't... but he hasn't yet.

ha well as much as he is a preening, diving, self-obsessed moron, he's definitely better than Rooney... which is why Fergie built the team around him when he was at United and shunted Rooney out left fairly often.

i'll add to the above list which already has 10 players in it

fabiano, robhino, neymar, messi, aguero, llorente, ibrahimovich, Muller, Klose, anelka

zlatan in his 1 season with barcelona 41 apps, 21 goals and 10 assists ( he gets slated for being overated, but his record speaks for itself, he didnt get on with the manager so thats why he has been loaned out)

My brain hurts. Rooney is overrated and only had one season where he has scored 20+ and then you proceed to highlight Neymar an 18 year old who is unproven in Europe and Robinho who flopped so badly at Man City that he was sent away to Santos for the remainder of last season?

Right.

He often doesn't play as a traditional striker so why does he have to prove his quality as a player with goals?

You should look at goals + assists at the very least.

lol @ Ronaldo on Tier 4. He's Tier 1, him and Messi are in a class of their own.

While we're at it, anyone want to make a Tier list of Goalkeepers, Defenders and Midfielders...?

(Go on, do it :p)
