He wasn't played as a striker for most of that though, even so, to suggest he is better than Berbatov is laughable.

I actually rate PIG, I don't think it's too much of a surprise he's opted for him over Foster. But many won't agree when I say he's a good keeper anyway... :p

You forgot Fletcher and Hargreaves (fingers crossed)

Right... O'Shea is not good enough and Brown and Neville are never fit...but they're still on the payroll so if we're not selling them how do propose on managing our wage bill if we buy another right back? And who would you buy? How much do you think they would cost?

I'm afraid we do have 2 premiership quality keepers, PIG did really well last season when VDS was out, how many other premiership clubs can you think of who have a backup as good? And how does VDS being 40 have anything to do with it? He isn't retiring and we aren't selling him so he has to play, he's not going to warm the bench is he. It's pointless buying another keeper until he retires.

I try to always forget fletcher..........;)

I said at the start of last season that we wont ever see Hargreaves play for united again, and I stick by that either the management will loose their patients with him, he will get injured again, or he will be transfered out if somebody is willing to take a punt on him.

As for whats VDS being 40 has to do with anything, google effects of age and gender on physical performance, and then amaze yourself with the findings about how less physically capable a top sportsman is by that age.
Its very interesting.
More to football than you think.

I'd personally put PIG on par with Almunia but better than the likes of Hilario & Fabianski so I agree we're not bad off in the reserve keeper stakes

It's always been the case with the keeper position though; there really is no point singing anyone till VDS retires as they'll just be playing second fiddle to him and no top keeper wants to do that

I'm somewhat surprised that we didn't just loan Foster out again seeing as Fergie clearly still has faith in him, let him build up his confidence and form again at Birmingham and then bring him back the season after to replace VDS. That is unless Fergie knows that VDS still has 2 more season left in him....

Well Hargreaves came on against Stoke :p

So you're saying we should sell VDS? to who? He just signed a new contract extension didn't he? I personally don't think he played badly last year, especially considering the injuries we had in defence. Regardless, the fact that he just signed a new contract means that we don't need a new keeper until that runs out. You can't have 3 keepers who all want first team football (that's why we sold Foster)

Edit: Wait we loaned Foster? I thought we'd sold him.

I see the problem as this, at the moment there are 3 possibly 4 great keepers out there who United have a realistic chance of signing who are on par or better than VDS was when we first signed him.
These Keepers no doubt after performances in the world cup and as a knock down effect of those playing in the world cup causing prices to escalate meaning that these keepers will be snapped up by other clubs on long term contracts, or be signing long term extensions with the clubs they are at, driving the price up meaning United either wont be able to get them at all, or end up paying through the nose for them.
Van Der sar still being there and decent isnt an issue, he moves down to the bench as the new keeper comes in and Pig gets shipped off to somewhere more his level.

Regardless of what he is saying, I think Ferguson will be bringing in and shipping out more players than many people think, much as I want one of them to be Berbtatov the club is lumbered with him, they cant make any money on him, he's shown he cant cut it a top club, and his general attitude wont cut it at a mid table side who is battling for every point.

In an ideal world, that being the world where:

a.) VDS is happy with that

b.) We can afford to have two goalies on first team wages (no idea what VDS is on but it must be high)

c.) We can afford one of these 3/4 world class keepers who are available

all of the home fans obviously or maybe it was a tiny minority

I never said it was all of the home fans

Even fervant home support shouldnt attack an ambulance though

We have two premiership quality goalies, we don't NEED another. Not until VDS is ready to retire.

.

Sorry you are dead wrong there - PIG is a decent goalie but we would never compete until the end of the season for the title with him in goal for majority of the games. Good for cup games and a few EPL games but he is questionable in a few areas.

Not only that but it takes time for a gk to gel with any team, and you cant do this over a summer, it has to be real live games of importance - its unlike any other position on the field imo and this is why you need the replacement while the retiring VDS is still around. VDS IS ready to retire - he cant continue at this level for much longer (and everyone has been saying it for a season or two already). Even a relatively minor injury at his age could finish his career tomorrow

Amos could come good - but no one really knows how good he will be until he has played live games (which are likely to be cup games to start with without injuries to the others)

I agree with what you are saying about the number of choices we have in other areas but its very deceptive as a large number of those are the same person and so a single injury rules out No 1 right back, No 3 centre back & No 4 midfielder (just random for example)

Personally think a 1st choice gk to take over VDS in 2012 and either an experienced striker/ left winger or Attacking & creative midfielder (thats two players in total) is bare minumum to even try and compete with Chelsea next season, more would be great but I think we need to try and feed some youngsters in and blood them

I also think people are looking very short term here in regards to gk position

1) I think its widely accepted that PIG will never get the undisputed No1 shirt

2) However long he can hack it for , VDS still doesnt have that long at the very top left

3) Every player wants to test themselves at the biggest clubs, most of which (unless something drastic happens) look pretty good for the next few years in the No 1 position (sorry but Arsenal are a little way behind imo, even though they desperately need a gk)

So who ever comes in may not get every game they want - however they do know that if they perform well they are set for 2 - 3 years after VDS goes on their initial contract let alone extentions when they come up. Considering the vageries of form and just getting used to a club and personnel I think one season battling from the bench isnt much to consider (after a WC, obviously season before its totally different question)

Welll with Fabregas' father coming out and saying his Son wants to go is good enough for me to say he wont be an Arsenal player next season. I am just hoping that Wenger doesnt break under the pressure and gets every last £ out of them. I am hoping the Sun story is true :D

Arsenal have slapped an £80m price tag on captain and midfielder Cesc Fabregas, which is more than double what Spanish giants Barcelona were hoping to pay for the Spanish international.
Full story: The Sun

DONT BREAK WENGER!!!!
