You went get the single pane of glass management for your switches if you use a UniFi gateway. The UniFi switches allow you to port channel, assign VLANs etc. But apart from that, they're not that clever at all. Depends what you want to do with them. If it's for the TV, PlayStation etc all on a flat network with no VLAN requirements, you don't need UniFi switches for that.
I probably would like to dabble with a couple of VLANs, just for learning purposes and a bit of enhanced security between the IoT bits and pieces and the PCs/laptops etc.

Yes I did, sorry I forgot their rackmount stuff was called the same.

Oh interesting about the replacement, is this why they are hard to find?
The Dream 'Machine' is the rack mountable options.

The Dream 'Router' is what you are referring to. It's a shame they aren't just refreshing it to be honest as it would be perfect for me.

I had the 2 Unifi Express delivered on Friday, unboxed 1 and had a quick play yesterday. Its a nice little device, similar size to the Apple TV 4K and is happy to run off of most half decent USB-C chargers. The form factor makes it easy to place on shelves and out of the way but it does get quite warm.

I did try it meshed and that works ok, these don't seem to be on par with the Eero for Wireless meshing, much the same as my experience with most UniFi hardware, but then its a 2x2 WiFi 6 without a dedicated backhaul. I cabled it in to one of my ports over towards the back of the house and its improved to the coverage outside and to the garage. I havent tried it yet as a router/ap but will have a play later today and see how it gets on.

One small oddity is that its deceided that the U6 Pro is its parent device rather than the UDR, not sure why or if its a problem was just a odd to see it in the topology like that and the mobile app topology seems to be getting itself very confused as it moves every few seconds.

as a matter of interest, what are you using as the main router?

I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on this as I've been swithering between the eExpress or the Lite.

Dream Machine is not rack mount, the Pro and SE are.
I don't think I understand in that case. I can see 4 SKUs when looking at gateways;

- Dream Machine Pro
- Dream Machine SE
- Dream Router (Sold out)
- Express (coming soon)

In the course of typing this out I THINK I've worked it out. There used to be a Dream Machine that wasn't rack mountable but, is now discontinued? I was referring to the current options and sorry to add any confusion.

The form factor is what appeals with the Express, its a pretty small device so easy to place around and if you can wire it in will be great as coverage seems to be very good for such a small device. Its much smaller than a Eero 6 let alone the 6 Pro and pulls less power.

Its a UDR downstairs with a U6-Pro upstairs connected to a switch in the loft and the Express cabled to the same switch.

Ah, I wasn't aware they had discontinued it. What speed broadband do you have? I think the Dream Router runs out of steam at higher speeds when it's PPoE.

I only have 200-300.

Dream router would have been good enough for me but, I think I’m going to dabble with the express when it releases. Must be better than the virgin hub 3 I have now!

The UDR does great on mine and i'm on 500/70, can max it out with the wifi across most of the house.

Thanks, I was going to get a U7 pro for in the loft (where my AC lite is currently situated) hence wasn't sure if a UXG lite would have been better for me as wouldn't require the built in AP.

Have you read up on 6GHz (Wifi6E/Wifi7)? Its penetration is very poor so unless you spend a lot of time in the loft it will still be 5GHz AC and AX traffic. WiFi7 will give you very little benefit. And I’m sure you’re aware that the licensing of the upper part of the 6GHz band is not yet agreed and it’s quite likely that they will go for 5G cellular traffic instead of WiFi. So WiFi7 will not work in the UK anyway.

You may be better buying a U6-Pro or even U6-lite as you’ll get the same or better performance for the same or less money.

Noted and thanks for the tips! I'll look into either of those instead also.

As long as he hasn’t gone to Alta Labs….
He likely is going to Alta. He obviously knows the people who exited UI and started AL. He left UI in Sep 2023 according to his LinkedIn, and if that’s accurate, and the ex-UI people at AL had a non-compete period, then Chris is likely waiting out the same thing.

He made an account (cmb) on the AL forum back in mid-December 2023
