*** Official Ubiquiti Discussion Thread ***

Morning, I need to get a new router modem. Just got Vodafone Fibre installed and the GUI is terrible and others are having the same issue when Googling certain issues. I want to replace the router / modem and I dont know where to start for a replacement. I need more control with my SSIDs and separating 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz with just WPA2 encryption for example. Is the Ubiquiti Dream Router a good device or is it overkill? 2nd hand I looks like £180 but I dont know if this as good or do I get an alternative around the budget of £150 or so?

I'm only considering this product because I have one of their APs which has been great in my house so maybe I can start expanding my eco system?

If you have an AP already then the Cloud Gateway Ultra is probably the best bang/buck.
Thanks for the suggestion. My AP is on the top floor of the house as I live in a town house style. The Cloud Gateway Ultra is slightly cheaper but I will need to think about putting another AP somewhere on the ground floor. I'm so out of touch of the APs but are smart they now using mesh capabilities? or do I need something different. Just looking at options for my home setup.

You don't want to mesh if you can avoid it. Best hardwiring your APs.

Think I’m going to ditch my old asus rt86u, had since 2014. Apart from the issues with Asus in general, think my asus has gone EOL for updates

Think I’ll go for the cloudgateway max and a wall 7 pro.

@Schizophonic I have the Cloud Gateway Ultra @Caged mentioned, a PoE switch and a U6 Pro AP. When I set it up I put the AP on a 3D printed stand, so it's pointing upwards, downstairs in my living room as a temporary measure to see what I may or may not need to do to get whole house coverage. My house is a 1950s 2 storey, 2 bed brick house with solid walls and as it turned out the AP covers the whole house with no issue with 4k streaming via WiFi anywhere.

As it looks like a flying saucer that's landed, I'm happy with it as it is. You never know, depending on your house you may get away with minimal outlay.

Okay I have my AP on the top floor hardwired. Its just the downstairs (ground floor) I'm concerned how to get a network cable.

I had a look at the products and the price if i was to do this setup and its not a cheap setup. Any real benefits if i was to get the Unifi Express?
I'm not looking to get blistering speeds as nothing in the household has a demand.

Honestly, don't overthink it and just get the Ultra or the Max - I've had my Max for a few weeks now and I can honestly say it's exceeded every single expectation I had. It's simply a 10/10 device. I'd imagine the Ultra is no different. Either should be the easiest decision you'll make. Just be careful to get the right one - there's non-cloud versions that would need you to deploy a VM / use a different device to manage it.

Pair it with a U6 or two as needed, and the cost does add up... but it's one hell of a rock solid solution for years to come. I've gone with a couple of U7's and some 2.5gb switches. It's not really needed, but it still works out cheaper and infinitely more stable than the absolutely atrocious TPLink Wifi7 system I'd tried beforehand.

Speed is one thing, but stability is another. It will do both without skipping a beat.

I think I will end up going for the Express, for my setup its enough for what I need it to do.
My Fibre hits a max of 910Mbps download and about 750Mbps upload.
Do not go for the Express; it is severely CPU limited and lags even loading the controller software. There are endless complaints on Reddit about how underpowered it is. The Ultra and Max are top notch devices though.

So to give everyone an update. I ended up getting an Express and I know I will get a bunch of flak from users here.

My first hurdle when I opened my Amazon purchase Unifi Express box, it came with a European plug. No drama just need to make sure the USB 3pin plug is a 3amp.
So I disconnected and switched off my Vodafone router and took the WAN cable to my Express. Booted it up, had the Uni App downloaded and it picked up the Express upon setup.

My Express failed to connect thinking it was just plug and play. Upon Googling I needed to get my Broadband details from Vodafone which wasn't an issue as their chat system was quite painless. However the conflicting information did make it confusing on the VLAN and what other reports online suggested. I navigated through the manual setup on my Express on the ISP settings and entered the details. It failed to connect, tried a few combinations and it still failed to connect.

Long story short after reading more online and diving deeper one forum post suggested to switch off the ONT box to clear any IPs. I tried that (not hard reset) and setup my Express and it all then connected. Happy days.

So just for reference if anyone else is reading this with Vodafone. VLAN is 911 and I'm based in East Anglia and using CityFibre hardware.

As for the performance. I'm not getting the full 900Mbps but getting less than that at the moment but I will have to troubleshoot this another time. So far its getting my head around the 'Site Management' and the various usernames / local usernames and password to use the Unifi Server management system.

So has this fixed my original problem with my Vodafone Router. Yes I would say. All my smart devices connected first time.

Boo ;)

I had the same issue with my Cloud Gateway Ultra, I had no internet coming from my VM router in bridge/modem mode but after a bit of head scratching, a reboot of the VM router solved that issue and it must've still thought it was talking to my old TPLink router.
