*** Official Ubiquiti Discussion Thread ***

Quick question. I currently have a Ubiquiti set up that I have been using for 3-4 years. I am happy with everything except the WIFI AP. Currently using a U6 LR which is OK especially with coverage, but it seems to max out at 300ish mbps download and upload no matter the distance (tested using iPerf to server). Now I know 300mbps is decent for family's everyday use, but I have one gig connection and would really like to get a higher throughput. I have tried everything and concluded the U6 LR is not going to get much faster.

Now even though I do have some WiFi 7 devices I was looking at get the u6 enterprise as I heard its speed and reliability is excellent. Originally, I was looking at the u7 pro/max but its flakiness it 2.4GHZ devices make it a no go. However, a friend of mine suggested I get the u7 pro or max and use it for its 5/6 GHZ connection and use my u6 LR solely for the 2.4GHZ devices (don’t think the wife would agree to let me get the E7 as this would be perfect).

Which do you guys think would be better the U6 enterprise or u7 pro/max with my current u6 LR for my 2.4GHZ devices. Appreciate any assistance.

Have you tried channel width 160?

I'm getting ~380mb at channel width 80 and it will go faster on 160.

Also, you've got nothing to lose trying the U7 Pro on 2.4hz, it will probably be fine...

Just realised I was connected via a VPN when I ran that rest which was likely dragging the speed down.

I swapped it to channel width 160 for the lols and I'm now pulling 900mb over WiFi from a U6 Pro on an iPhone 16 Pro

I definitely think this is a problem with your configuration.

Channel width doesnt make a difference. I think in your case its the u6 pro which makes the difference between our speeds (u6 pro's qualcomm chipset is much better than the u6 lr's mediatek).

It should make a difference regardless of chipset.

Have you tried factory reset and are you sure your global settings are not overriding your individual AP settings?

Unfortunately, yes I tried resetting many times. For a few months i tried everything and then just gave up. I did manage to get increase my upload (I forget which firmware version that was) but the download for some reason refused to budge. Now I'm looking to upgrade and hoping to get better speed.

Isnt it exactly the same unit as the UNVR-Pro, I guess just different firmware.

I was very tempted to get one but from all the info I have read its purely file serving which is fine, but for me would really need basic DNLA support to replace a QNAP.

Something funky is going on, try a different channel, because it should definitely be making a difference.

Take a look here;

This is what I have, it's mounted on the ceiling upstairs and exceeds 1 Gbps with line of sight, I generally get 400 Mbps as a minimum and anywhere between moving around the house.

1gbps in line of sight and 400mbps minimum would be brilliant. This is why I tempted to go with the u6 enterprise as generally I rarely hear anyone say anything bad about.

I've tried different channels and even tried the DFS channels but still the same. Its possible I have defective unit but i lived with it over the last few years. This time I'll test the hell out of my new AP and return if there are any issues instead of taking too long trying to fix it or hope a future firmware will fix it.

If the channel width didn't increase the speed you either got something affecting all 5GHz frequencies or you are running 100mb cable to the AP or fixed port speed.

If the wireless is setup correctly there is something wrong on the wired side.

What client devices do you have? Do you have an Android Phone?

If so, download Analiti and take a look under the OPER and see what it says for PHY Speeds, or better yet upload a screenshot here.

300Mbps is 2.4GHz throughput

Right, here are the screenshots. I've learnt the AP got better at some point but I still think there an issue with its download. First screenshot is at 80mhz directly below the AP the download is much better then when I first got the AP though still not as good as the upload:

This next one is in the next room. Though the download is exactly the same in the screenshot it did bounce around the 500 figure.

Now this one is directly below the AP but at 160mhz which improves the download........but

this one is in the next room at 160mhz.....and now i remember why I had my wifi at 80mhz. My house layout is weird as room where the AP is and directly above have a thick solid wall between it and the rest of the house. However, the room where the AP is installed is where 80% of people use their phones/other wifi devices as the bedrooms have Ethernet hardwired. I might stick the u6 LR elsewhere to cover the weak wifi here when I buy my next AP. As mentioned above I still think the download should be better even at 80mhz.

Looks like this is a simple signal strength issue rather than an ap issue. The speeds look fine for the signal strength.

That said, is the wifi speed actually an issue in the real world, are you getting and drop outs etc on the devices at the edge of its range? I guess what I’m trying to say, is there really any real world benefit of buying more kit?

P.S. im not one to talk, I’ve got 3 APs, one middle of the house, one on the back of the house (external) and one in my garage!
