*** Official Ubiquiti Discussion Thread ***

Been following this thread closely whilst doing some works on our house.

Im in two minds as to what gear to get in an ideal world I would grab a USG Pro 4 and a 16 port POE switch but I'm concerned about the noise. I'm struggling to find any good vids that give you an idea of the noise from a sensible distance.

Where I'm looking at having my rack located is at the back of a cupboard in our bedroom. How noisy are they? Would you hear them if in a cupboard from 8-10 feet? Would you hear them after changing the fans to noctua or similar?

Also if anyone has a USG 3 port, what kind of throughput do you get with smart queues and dpi enabled? Currently on a 77/20 connection and don't want to loose too much with both enabled on it (think I read both can be enabled together now?).

Thanks in advance for any info, tried trawling the ubiquiti forums but struggling to find anything helpful.

The USG-4P is quite loud. About the same as a gaming PC under load. The US-16-150W is basically silent in normal use. I've never heard the fans spinning up on any of ours.

I have 250mb down 30mb up Fibre, my USG 3 could easily handle DPI on and hardware offload enabled and use the full bandwidth without any slowdown. If you enable Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) then it limits the USG3 to 85mbs throughput becuase of the increased workload on the processor and hardware offload is disabled.

So you have to decide if IPS is a feature you want to enable and is necessary in your network.

Yes, and if you read the threads about false positives then you may decide it's more trouble than it's worth at the moment. UBNTs marketing people are playing a blinder on this one because they've basically built a £1500 router with a tiny market and what they're basically saying is that if you're on Unifi and you want your internet connection IPS'd you basically have to shell out £1500 for the USG-8-XG. So people who believe IPS is the new "security" will buy a USG-8-XG. There is, however, a bit of a clue in the -8. Clearly UBNT have a USG-x-XG as well, it's just not announced yet. I think many people on here are aware of the USG-4-HD project that was shelved until the USG-8-XG was put into General Availability and I suspect that product will see a resurrection under the USG-4-XG tag very soon after the USG-8-XG takes the market by storm. But again, it probably won't be cheap.

The other option for UBNT is to offer some security kit for the Unifi Application Server XG, which has just gone GA at £1500. This is supposedly a £1500 UBNT-cameras-only NVR that also replaces your Cloud Key as it has the controller built-in. I can't see there being much of a market for it in that role but given the specs (quad-core Xeon D with 32Gb RAM, 120Gb SSD, 2 x 2Tb HDD and 2 x 10GbE NICs) it could be repurposed as a security appliance.

I simply don't believe that UBNT hired Chris Buechler to tart up the USG-3P. They clearly have serious plans in the security appliance arena and I think it's going to be very interesting to be a Unifi user over the next couple of years.

Damn that's pretty loud then, think I might stick with original thought of:

USG-3
8 Port POE
24 Port non Poe switch as think all are fanless

Don't think need more than 8 ports of power at mo and the small dip in throughput that I may have (if even need to use smart queues) probably won't outweigh having that kind of noise near the bedroom

Cheers.

This is what I have. Once the switch is on a newer firmware, the fans will be off unless it gets too hot. Mine has never gotten hot enough to start the fans.

Bear in mind you will currently need Beta firmware for the USG for smart queues to work with DPI.

I posted literally 10 posts above yours, giving my experience with the USG 4-Pro :p

Anyway... don't even bother with the stock fans, they're loud. I changed mine for the 20mm version of the Noctua fan that I mentioned ^ and they're fine. I didn't use either of the low-speed adaptors (there are 2 in the box) as my rack is under the stairs and I'm happy with some background noise, but I've tried the adapters as a test and the fans are basically silent if you use them. Without the adaptors the fans are quiet enough that they aren't loud but you'd be able to hear them if you were less than 10ft away.

I’m not sure if it has been mentioned before but there is a new revision of the US-16-XG 10GbE switch in the stores now. If you are buying one, you want to specify at least revision 6 with a test date after the middle of October. The test date is printed on the box so your retailer can easily check for you.

The new revision mainly fixes the broken 10GbE copper ports issues so the US-16-XG can actually work with the UAS-XG now. Which is good news for anyone wanting a cheap 10GbE switch to hook up to a NAS.

Ooh I didn't know this. Looking forward to it now.

I need to replace an ageing SonicWall TZ appliance. That does Internet (via BT VDSL modem), switching for a few devices and WiFi for part of the house. Already have a UAP AC LR for the garage / garden. I've got the UniFi controller running as an Amazon AWS instance, though I want to move that back "home" at some point.

Looking for the minimal number of boxes, so thinking of an EdgeRouter Lite 5 Port POE, with that powering a new AP AC LR (preference is coverage over outright speed). Is the EdgeRouter stable? Happy to put the effort in to get it setup but then want minimal faff.

The USG is an option but then means needing a POE switch for the AP + local devices where the router is, so more boxes to hide.

I can only speak for my ER-X which I only use as a switch and for the POE pass through. Mine only gets reboots for firmware updates so months of uptime.

The Edge line of products are generally regarded as pretty bulletproof. I fully believe Unifi is the way forward though. Unifi is also extremely stable. I know of one system that ran for over 12 months. The very frequent upgrades aren’t due to instability but almost always to add new features to the system. If you don’t need those features, you don’t need to upgrade.

A USG 3P and a US-8 will only need 1 power supply to run both of those and an AP-AC-LR because the switch is PoE powered and has a PoE pass through on port 8.

If you just want it to work, and you’re not concerned about access from anywhere, then the EdgeRouter 5 Lite is a great choice.

Thanks @WJA96. So the USG 3P can provide POE to the switch and the AP? I've found this thread which says (in 2017) the USG can't be powered by POE but not opposite.

No, I got my product mixed up. You would need power to the USG and the switch. And if you want more than 1 AP you’ll need a US-8-60W.

I was thinking you could use the 24V USG 4P backup to run both the USG and the Switch but it won’t work with the USG 3P.

My apologies if I confused you.

Thanks folks.

So looking at the USG 3P, US-8-60W to provide POE for a new AP-AC-LR and possibly a cloud key controller (which can also take POE from the US-8-60W I believe). Shame it's three (or four) boxes to replace one.
Shutting down the AWS instance now it's not free will pay for the cloud key controller in under 12 months.

Or just find someone with a cloud based Unifi controller who doesn't mind letting you piggy back on theirs? Mine is largely unused so you're welcome to have a site on mine.
