*** Official Ubiquiti Discussion Thread ***

Well its only had two days use and is basically brand new so I would want a fair chunk of change for it unfortunately, I might stick it on tomorrow but I reckon its a bit big for most people heres uses.

I believe there is a new Cloud Key Controller in the works, might be worth waiting for that.

It’s in the Beta store now. It’s a bizarre thing. USB C, PoE, Unifi Controller with battery backup, 2-line LED display and 1-5tb HDD to act as an NVR. And it runs the new Unifi NVR software.

I suppose it will be EXACTLY what someone has been asking for but at a projected $400 asking price it’s not going to be high on my shopping list!

Is that really the v2 cloud key and not some other product? I thought the v2 would be a minor update not something completely different.

EDIT: Ahh there is a v2 and a v2+

Just ordered a ac mesh unit to cover the back garden. Tomorrow's task is to run a cable to it

Shame these can't be locked into place to stop theft. I'm going to have to strategically mount it so it can't be seen from the side street over the fence

Why did you buy a mesh device if you are running (presumably a poe) cable to it?

I thought the whole point of mesh was the way it uses a dedicated wireless channel for communication between the different devices as an alternative to a wired network connecting to every wireless access point. (I know that some 'mesh' system allow you to use an ethernet backhaul but again this seems to kinda bring into question why you bought a mesh system unless it was because you needed the mesh functionality to start with before running ethernet to each device.

Its an access point if you run an ethernet cable to it...? and one where you have paid for the mesh capabilities you are not going to use?

It's the same as the other unifi access points with the ability to mesh, You don't need to use mesh, it's the only one in the unifi range that is fully outdoor rated.

NB, the airmax and other models dont use unifi controller either.

I take its better (weather proofing wise) the the uap ac pro's then? Which I think can work outside just as long as their somewhat shielded from precipitation under a wide eave or similiar?

I think it's same line as the ac lite? . I didn't want the ac Pro outside on a exposed to weather wall, it's overkill for the garden.

But yeh it's better weather proof, it's a has drain hole at the bottom for water to drain incase it gets rained on.

It’s called the Cloud Key Gen 2 so it’s definitely a Cloud Key. I don’t see the need personally, but I’m sure it will be perfect for someone with 4-10 cameras.

Ubiquiti having confusing model numbers, or making pretty huge changes to products without also updating the model number? Doesn't sound like them :D

They updated the RAM, CPU and added USB C to all Cloud Keys manufactured after October 2017 but they didn’t make any sort of fuss about it. I’m not aware of any other devices coming through called ‘Cloud Key’.

They changed the PoE type on the AC-Lite without making a new part number, did the same with some of the UniFi switches, and there's two types of cameras out there - one passive PoE with an 802.3af adapter in the box, and one with 802.3af integrated into the camera, on the same product codes.

Looking to upgrade my home network and have narrowed my shopping list down to the following (probably a typical list for a home setup);
  • 2 x UAP-AC-Lite Access Points
  • 1 x US-8-60W Managed Switch
  • 1 x USG
  • 1 x Cloud Key
Is there anything I should watch out for? Any gotchas? I'm planning to ceiling mount the APs (cable running issues not withstanding) and use POE. I have 200/20 FTTP via BT and have an OpenReach ONT. I'd like to create separate wireless networks for various groups of devices (Sonos, Smart Home tech, kids devices, etc) and I use IPv6.
Minor change of plan. I'm going to get a Raspberry Pi 3 and use this for the controller software rather than spend the £70 on the cloud key. Will I lose any functionality/features going down this route?

They added 48V support to the 24V AP-AC-Lite and AP-AC-LR which was an upgrade on an existing product so I didn’t really have an issue with that. They did the same thing on the Cloud Key ie. same part number, upgraded device in the box. Again, I don’t have an issue with that.

And on the switches, they threatened to remove the 24V support, the user base screamed ‘No’ and they changed their minds and that threw the supply chain into a right old state that they still haven’t recovered from.

So I’m not really sure where you’re coming from really. The Cloud Key Gen 2 Plus is obviously a very strange name but they have previously renamed Beta products before they sent them to General Release.

Well it put people in a position of wanting an 802.3af part but there being no clear way to know if you were getting one. I just can't figure out why they can't issue a different part code for a revised product with different functionality, it would save all the confusion.

Unless you’re running DPI

You don’t need the controller running permanently unless you want the monitoring functions running so you could just set the network up with a PC running the controller and leave it at that.

They put a sticker on the front of the boX if I recall correctly?

Initially I had *HUGE* problems with my Sonos stuff, it'd randomly stop playign then the app would say that it couldn't find any Sonos kit on the network. After all sorts of messing about I created a seperate 2.4GHz only wifi network (on the same VLAN as the other network) for the Sonos kit and since then it's been perfect.

That was some time ago so maybe firmware and controller upgrades mean it's no longer an issue but I thought I'd mention it.
