What do you expect? Isn't the rental scheme you cited specifically aimed at giving you something without paying for it?

We used to actually get given vehicles to keep from events, not the chance to drive one for a few hours.

The monetisation has got out of hand, if you want to keep paying then fine but theyve lost a fair few players because of it.

Oh blimey.... I've had a bucket-ton of free premiums in the past!

Granted, I've had to work for some of them.... but, some have been well worth the effort.

i301 springs to mind, as did the pretty epic M8A1, until they upped its' battle rating to be too high :D I've also 'earned' the DB-7 and D521, as well as the XP-50 and the Spitfire LF Mk9 in the American tree.

This kind of behaviour, giving away premiums, is what makes a player base happy, loyal, and willing to spend further money on the game. Blatant price increases, price-gouging and rip-off monetisation (£80 for 4 tanks! REALLY?!?!) is what annoys players, and makes people against spending any further money.

It's sad, because underneath the awful marketing policies, is a pretty good game :)

to be fair the i-301 and m8a1 were classic signs that the grind was getting too ridiculous, that was 2 weeks of non stop effort on some days just to catch up.

Oh and the t34-57, that was a hard grind but worth it.

Also Boston, boomerangs, havoc, and a few other high tier premiums were avaliable once.

Used to be loads of freebies :(

you aint gonna get f all free from these crooked sods ever again. they're just going to squeeze this cash cow till it pops - for me the sooner the better. I love the game, but the path gaijin are taking it just makes me wish it would hurry up and implode

Managed to spend a couple of hours trying out the new Brit starter tanks last night. The T17E2 AA car seems very powerful at low tier, and I really like the way they have implemented these armoured cars they handle better than wheeled vehicles do in Armored Warfare IMO.

Curse the 2Pdr/40mm gun on the low tier Brit tanks! Man, such a useless weapon when you go up against a StuG or Panzer III/IV.

Enjoying the Valentine though, armour is _fairly_ reasonable and has fair mobility. Looking forward to unlocking the Archer, I hope that will be my Brit version of the Marder ;)

Yeah I think Archer is the way to go, the Churchill GunCarrier at 3.3 doesn't seem as appealing. Gun looks great but being mounted so low down in the middle of a flat surface... not great.

Thats good to hear and something I'll be doing, its acheiveable and with a good reward, nice to see.

You guys moan sooooo much ;)

I dont think its unjustified tbh, I've got 1200 hours played and its got worse and worse as its gone on through developer decisions.

I'm not asking to have the good old days back, I just want rid of pure monetisation. I've bought tanks for 6000 eagles because they were worth the money at the time.

The american tanks beta was 2 euro to buy a tank to unlock the closed beta, which a large number of us did. This time its a minimum of £8.

The bigger the game gets and the longer it stays going, the more money it's going to need. I've been playing with Brit tanks but golden eagles haven't helped me and I've been levelling fast (albeit with Premium account). I'm happy to support them for what is in essence a great game.

I've been using my Achilles for exp gains for the Brit tanks, managed to get a complete BR2.7 lineup currently:

Crusader MkIII, Cromwell MkV, Valentine Mk IX and the SPAA Armored Car MkII

Progress is starting to slow down now.

Cromwell V is awesome. Great mobility and reasonable firepower for its BR (2.7!!!). Armour not brilliant but it reminds me of the T34 bar that, superb for flanking.

The Matilda II is great fun, I've had some amusing games in this because its armour really does appear to be quite good. At one point I was up against 2 x KV-1 and an SU-85 at close range, managed to crit them all and disable one of them before they destroyed me, lasted a good minute or two. So, they seem to have got that one about right, good armour with poor mobility and a terrible gun for BR 3.0, it's got a really nice fast rate of fire but it's like a peashooter.

I'm quite liking this Achilles lark :D

Brit tanks are a bit of a mixed bag, but I'm enjoying them on the whole. AEC Armoured car with 2x20mm Oerlikon cannons at 2.7BR is utterly, utterly devastating. I've been wrecking Crusaders, M3 and M5's, and even Pz3 and Pz4's at its' BR level. It's at its' absolute best if you can get side-on to anything, and close in, but even face on the turret turns so fast you get the first shots in, which often disables their gun, and a few more hits and they're dead. :D
