It doesn't detract from the game play, it just adds depth for various players.

If you dont care about achievements, ignore them.

Agreed

What harm is the achievement system doing ? oh wait it hurts your epeen because it's not as high as others.

Its simple really you dont care dont bother with them and dont worry. Personally I like the achievements it gives me something to aim for when I'm not raiding or pvping. It also gives guilds something to aim for too by going for them random (and sometimes hard) achievements in raids and or BGs.

one thing that really bothers me in this game now are the achievement points... something about the whole system just constantly irks me. call it being anal or being over-concerned with trivialities, but my playing experience is constantly ruined when i'm aware of how little achievement points my character has. i got to rank14 in vanilla and experienced most of the game's content, but took time off from tbc (when i rerolled a belf) and wotlk (irl university commitments). now i've returned my character just feels... 'weak' in some arbitrarily quantified way. perhaps it's just me but, yeah, achievement points have really spoilt my enjoyment of the game-- they detract from the original focus of raiding and hardcore pvp.

i get the same thing in starcraft 2 as well. multiplayer league stats are great and all but then there's that pesky achievement figure just leering at you from the top-corner... :/

That is just retarded. They don't mean anything.

I'm excited for Cataclysm, but I will admit that as a long term Mage player I'm a little dissapointed with how Mage plays at the moment.

Fire is great as long as the fight is the right type, otherwise half the new stuff is useless. Frost is nice that it's usable again but a little dull and Arcane is just plain BORING.

I thin whatever I raid with in Cataclysm will be something I've leveled to see the new zone changes.

Exactly, there is nothing at all you can do to secure it and it just makes you another form of ebayer :(

He was even asking for one about level 74! I cant understand that at all considering it takes no time at all to level and its not like he would be getting a decked out character.

More of the thing of CBA to level. I have enough Beta testing and taccys to write for my guild + working a 9-5 5day a week job. I've already got 5 80s. I gave my 80 pala with full 264 to a mate coz he wanted to play again.

Yes,they can do damage. The amount of damage they do is offset by the fact they can heal themselves.Fights will generally take a little longer if you have a healing spec but it's totally viable to solo with it.

The downsides to a priest are cloth armour so you'll be very squishy at first. You'll also be sitting and drinking mana drinks fairly often because all of your damage comes from spells..at least till you level a bit and get a wand for damage. On the plus side priests are very versatile healers with 2 effective healing talent trees. You can heal groups very easily and quickly as well as heal single targets very well.

Paladins use mail armour at first then get to wear plate at higher levels. They use a combination of weapon damage and spells when attacking. They are a hybrid class and you'll be able to choose whether to dps, tank or heal.Their healing isn't as versatile as a priests, they tend to excel at single target healing but suffer a little when trying to heal groups quickly.Soloing tends to be *much* easier with a paladin too with little downtime between killing.

To be honest, either class can heal 5 man groups well enough and you'll be in demand as a healer no matter which healing class you choose.I chose a priest as my main character because of it's versatility and challenging play style.I'm happy I made the right choice.I've tried a paladin but didn't like it.

Ultimately it boils down to what you like the look of :D

What level do you think i need to play them both to, so i can make my choice?

You seemed to have forgot about Shamans. They're a hybrid healing/DPS class and wear mail, so not too squishy. They can happily heal 5man HCs and Raids. They also have the choice to be melee DPS or ranged caster DPS. Its made better that both ranged caster DPS and healer can share the same epic equipment.

Achievement points have no effect on the "performance " of your character. They mean nothing at all, other than a measure of how much time you waste playing wow. Pretty idiotic thing to get worked up over.

I was looking through my achievements after not playing for over a year.

It doesn't show most of the dungeons and raids I've done....

It shows I've never done Karazhan, Gruul'sand other while I'm wearing the Items from it. Same for loads of BC Heroics...

It seems like a rather pointless thing to me if it's so inacurate, but hell if people want to make it the only thing they focus on really good for them.

I'll start playing again when Cata launches, want to try alliance and a Worgen, already faction swapped an alt to alliance so I can get some gold :p

Keep in mind that the achievement system was implmented quite late. WoW was not setup to account for achievements in Vanilla or TBC. I mean that would be a MAMMOTH of a task to try and work out what every single char had ever done in there wow play time.

I mean its not like its even that hard to do Gruuls or Kara or even BC HCs anymore if your that concerned just go solo them or get a couple of friends and zerg it. I've soloed most of Kara (Chess event sadly I need an extra body) and Gruuls can easily be done with 3 or 4. imo the reason I play this game is its fun and the social aspect of playing with guildies and/or RL friends in game. So surely you can grab 2 or 3 mates and do some fun achievements like Kara. Nostalgia is great from doing them and its fun when you think back holy crap man I remember this fight taking ages to learn.

MC is also another one I do (grinding for the eye off raggy) MC can be soloed easy for me. Might be a bit harder depending on class but still.

As already mentioned achievements are one of those things you either really gun at them and enjoy collecting them (like me :D ) or you just ignore them and get on with the game. Really do not see what the big deal is. There are people in my guild that hardcore go out to get achievements, our GM has nearly 11k achieve points ! Then again there are others who dont give a dam. Our MT has about 3k points if that. Yet he is in 25 ICC HC kit. So is our MT "weak" because he doesnt have many achieve points even tho he is prob one of the best geared tanks on our server. ?

Just transferred to Ravencrest Alliance, having played horde since vanilla its SO weird! Got lost in SW last night! :(

Also a massive change goin from a med pop realm where alliance outnumbered us 2:1 to a high pop realm where we are in the majority!

Fun times.

Personally I'd say at least 60. When is the next PTR due up? I think you can get premade characters copied over at level 80, should be a good way to test all the classes to see what fits you best.

If you start playing a class straight away at 80 you will be completely overwhelmed by all the stuff you can do. Particularly when you're new to WoW. 90% of what you learn about your class you will learn by levelling it.

What level do you think i need to play them both to, so i can make my choice?

Get to at least 30 then you'll have a good idea. Make sure you do a few dungeons so you can see how your class fits into a group.

ive got no interest in the achievements but theres people in my guild constantly grindind rep with low level factions for Insane which I can only tip my hat too for their perserverence.

I once tried to get rep with the Kaluak (sp) just to get their fishing rod and even got bored doin that so i cant imagine how tiresome it is to get rep with bloodsail etc.

Once guy has made so many darkmoon decks and bought so many pristine diamonds i have no idea whener he gets all the gold to do so.

Only good thing about people farming rep i syou can make a small fortune by grinding the areas and selling the drops on AH, ive made about 5k alone on our server from Bijous in ZG whilst im farming for the tiger anyway.

The only recent achievement i actually worked towards was getting the drake from ICC 10man achievements. The only reason that was even possible was because half those achievements you get automatically killing the bosses week in week out.

I dont mind achievements its just the people who say grats all the time when someone gets them. For big ones, yeah ok fair enough but few holiday ones where you get one just for clicking on something. Chat fills up with grats messages and I just think do you really need to congratulate someone for being able to right click on something?

I noticed though they have stopped advertising the achievements in guild now unless its a really good achievement.

I finally finished my KOT Rep to get my Burning crusader achievement :) and I was all YAY FINALLY FINISHED !! and all the guildies where like what you on about. Then I linked the achieve and they said they had not seen the achieve spam. Its happened a few other times with guildies completing low lvl achieves I dont see the achievement unless they link it personally.

I quite like rep grinds though tbh. I generally wack on some music listen to that while grinding. Or sometimes do the grind as im listening to music and reading a book :p Multi-tasking is WIN ! :D

ahhh in that case I like the bugged ver :p I don't need to see every silly achievement every guildie gets.

Espec as we have about 32 people in our guild all with various alts.

meh

He asked specifically about paladins vs priests. If we're going down the full hybrid route then druid is the best option as you can fulfil all 4 roles perfectly well.Shaman are a very good choice..as are all classes to be honest.
