OLED 4K 30" 60 Hz - Dell UP3017Q

i think i would be sold if this was about half the price...

i wonder if 55" is too big for a monitor - the LG c6 seems to be around a sensible ish price considering the size.

Yeah. Price is only thing holding me back. This thing will deprecate like crazy over the next 24 months. I have to be patient. It will likely take 24 months for it to drop to my price range. By then the tech will be more mature, come with HDR, 120hz and with adaptive sync tech.

I (don't) like how the user's manual has clauses like "dead pixels? suck it up" and "burn in? try not to use monitor too much".
For that price range this attitude is totally unacceptable.

OLED Monitor Quality and Pixel Policy
During the OLED monitor manufacturing process, it is not uncommon for one or more pixels to become fixed in an unchanging state which are hard to see and do not affect the display quality or usability. For more information on OLED Monitor Pixel Policy, see Dell support site at: http://www.dell.com/support/monitors

Common Symptoms: Missing Pixels
What You Experience: screen has spots
Possible Solutions:
• Cycle power on-off.
• Pixel that is permanently off is a natural defect that can occur in current display technology.
• For more information on Dell Monitor Quality and Pixel Policy, see Dell Support site at: http://www.dell.com/support/monitors

NB: there is nothing about "OLED Monitor Pixel Policy" on that support site (only LCD one). So I assume for now it will be whatever customer service rep decides.

Common Symptoms: Image retention from a static image left on the monitor for a long period of time
What You Experience: Faint shadow from the static image displayed appears on the screen
Possible Solutions:
• Use the Power Management feature to turn off the monitor at all times when not in use (for more information, see Power Management Modes).
• Alternatively, use a dynamically changing screen saver.

If they made it cheaper I would be more than happy to use a screen saver. Better than dealing with ips glow and backlight bleed. Not to mention the much better image quality.

Reminds of the time I contacted LG to try and get a repair done on my second 29um65 rather than just RMA'ing the monitors until I got a good one.... The LG rep. more or less told me to just use the monitor in bright conditions with a low brightness setting lol......

Umm unless screensaver is all what you will display on the monitor? Otherwise you will get burn in from window caption bars.
Unless you
a) make taskbar autohide
b) don't use maximized windows and keep remembering to move your windows around
d) regularly change wallpaper

This sounds like a lot of hassle for "premium end monitor". I buy monitor to use it, not to think that I am wearing down some pixels too much because I forgotten to regularly switch where Messenger displays its popups.

Well, or just never use monitor for desktop (e.g use second LCD one for that) and use OLED only for full-screen games/movie watching. Even then, you have to be careful not to use letterbox (will eventually burn in letterbox edges) or not to play single game all the time which has HUD in same place.

Huh? I though a screensaver was something that would turn on after a certain amount of time of inactivity. Like we used to use on CRT monitors. What does task bar have anything to do with it?

I would even be happy to go as far as having my monitor go to sleep after a few minutes of inactivity.

Screensaver turns on when you *don't use the monitor*. May as well just use "turn monitor off" option - this will stop the wear completely.

But they don't state how much usage is "too much" - hour a day? 3 hours a day? Can I use it as work monitor and use it for 8 hours a day? Nope, they just state "it could happen, and if it did, you displayed something at same place for too long".

Just sat there using windows like I am now I have my taskbar showing and will do for 10 hrs a day. There isnt an inacivity to invoke a screensaver so 10 hrs of taskbar will burn in on a oled screen unless they do something clever.

Lets see what Vega reports :)

Absolutely zero image retention on mine so far. But I do use the "auto hide taskbar" option.

Good to know.

The tech will only get better in the next couple of years so hopefully won't be a problem by the time prices come down.

Just popped back in here again to drool over these picks :D

OLED will definitely be my next monitor. Just need to wait until 2019 for a Freesync 2 4K 120Hz OLED with proper HDR to come out at a somewhat decent price :)

So 2025 for a "monitor" probably.... ;) :p
Don't say that man :(

Daniel has sent all our feedback to LG so he will make it happen. My worry is it will cost silly money and come with ugly matte coating :p:D

I would actually pay more than usual for the spec above if I could get a 5 year warranty for it as I would use it at least that long.

That I'm sure he has and the main thing they took note of was that people are happy to spend stupid money as long as there is no bleed... :p

Just look at this:

But yeah realistically, my expectation for <£1000 OLED "monitor" is going to be around 2020+

Even if they brought out a 34" 1440 100+HZ HDR freesync OLED screen for £1500, I still would not pay that knowing that I could get a 55" 4k HDR OLED for a cheaper price, currently it can be had for £1350 and by the time a monitor of that spec comes out, even better and/or larger OLED TVs will be even cheaper, probably be able to pick up an OLED TV for <£1000 by that time.... :o
