Olympic Opening Ceremony

What's this NHS **** about? Why would anyone celebrate their medical service in an international sporting event? Perhaps the olympic medical team is superior than the NHS

Because the opening ceremony is about all things British.

The NHS is envied all around the world and doesn't exist to this degree anywhere else in the world.

The cauldron is made out of Shewees:

The status update was tacky, i am sure there are better ways to illustrate the WWW than Twitter!

There were no hashtags and with the relationship updates it looked more like Facebook, which does illustrate the internet quite well.

At the start I was wondering why the set looked so much like the LOTR and why the tree was giving birth to people, but as it went on I really enjoyed it. Was very good.

Forging of the rings was absolutely epic. The cauldron was also very impressive!

Hell, yeah! The rings bit looked amazing enough on telly, with the sparks etc. off their edges - must have been stunning if you'd actually been there. Definitely a collective "OMFG ..." moment in our house! I love the way the whole stadium took on a hellish atmosphere during the Industrial Revolution sequence, purely through the colour of the lighting and the smoke, contrasted with the fluffy, rural overtone a few moments earlier. Genius.

Loved the whole digital sequence too and the accompanying parade of 60s, 70s and 80s music. Great to hear Frankie Goes to Hollywood get an inclusion with 'Relax' (although you could argue that, in the spirit of competitiveness, 'Two Tribes' might have been more appropriate), but a shame they couldn't include my heroes Depeche Mode, in honour of their 30-year career if nothing else.

Another stroke of genius to include Tim Berners-Lee, the father of the most revolutionary British invention of recent years, the internet - something that has now become so ingrained, it would be difficult to imagine life without it.

And I must confess to being slightly teary-eyed when they played a) 'Nimrod' from Enigma Variations, without doubt my favourite bit of classical music ever - there's just something about it that screams 'England' or 'Englishness' and b) that stunning solo rendition of 'Abide with Me', simply one of the most haunting songs ever.

Absolutely brilliant as far as I am concerned. A great little insight into our culture and made me soo proud to be British.

Amen to that - it was grand, it was epic and reminded you that this nation did once have a lot to be proud of, but it was also tongue-in-cheek and done, I thought, in a completely unboastful manner.

Have to agree with pretty much everything you say except the bold bit should say the World Wide Web :)

Rowan made my night though, was crying :D

Exactly this, bean was hilarious!

The ring forging did it for me, it looked sensational in HD!

Watched right up until ruddy MacArtney came on, then swiftly turned off!

Loved the ceremony, the steampunk-esque industrial revolution and forging of the rings was brilliant.

I also loved the music, it was great to see Frank Turner play just before the start and the musical medley took me back to my youth with the Sex Pistols, New Order et al.

I don't why the Queen looked so miserable most of the time though....

It has to be said that that was absolutely epic...

The country side followed by the industrial revolution was immense! The let down for me was Paul McCartney at the end... Very much an anti climax unfortunately, although saying that they other bits were just so amazing he just seemed average, if they rest was rubbish he might have seemed better :p

I know it's a bit judgemental since it hasn't happened, but seeing the scenes of practice, the layout of the sections and grass and petting zoo, I'm going out on a limb here to say that it is going to be terrible.

What you reckon? Travesty waiting to happen?

And to the OP....

You were very very very wrong :p
