ONM - MarioKart Wii Review

I haven't played the Wii version yet, but snaking is a staple part of most karting games to me. I remember Crash Team Racing having snaking as a staple part of the game and it seems more than perfectly fine to me. It's a skilled and nuanced part of the game, and not really THAT difficult to pick up and get used to. It's how and when you snake that separates the men from the boys. As far as I know, Mario Kart Wii still has snaking, but you need to snake for an extended period of time until the boost kicks in for proper. this means snaking on long straights is out of the question.

This was how I've read it whenever I've come across MKWii snaking information.

Don't play stupid with me. It has been an intended technique since MK64, you'd have to be blind to not notice that.

And the final nail in the coffin, a few of the staff ghosts snake.

There used to be a guide on snaking on the official nintendo website but I can't find their game hints section at the moment.

I love how pathetic the anti snaking lot can be with their excuses :)

I was joking, calm down you freak

Meh, I don't think there has been a decent Mario Kart since the first, so I'm not holding out any hopes for this. Also, online integration would be fine if it weren't for the silly friend codes.

Still that's the one thing with being a natural pessimist, you can always be surprised.

Played the DS version?

Yup, didn't think too much of it, so traded it in for Rainbow 6 vegas.

Fair enough.

I think a lot of the SNES mario kart overrating comes from people being a lot younger when it came out. It was a fresh new idea and there were always other kids around to play multiplayer with. I think the DS version is easily the best but then I've always had a social bunch of mates to play games with throughout my gaming life.

I bet a lot of kids will remember new IPs released today in much the same way in 15-20 years time.

Mario Kart on the DS is awesome, and the Wii version is looking brilliant too. I'll be pre-ordering that as soon as I can be sure I've got the cash...

On the snaking front... I don't snake, mainly because I've not really got the time to devote to perfecting that black art. That being said, the other day I was racing against a friend on Desert Hills and realised that I was essentially snaking through the slalom at the end of the lap by doing very quick boosts on each bend. Perhaps if I can figure out exactly what my hands are doing there, I can translate it to other tracks as well.

It took me 5 minutes on figure 8 track to get the hang of it. All decent players power boost for as much of the lap as possible which has a natural extension into snaking as you just add in an extra boost between turns on most tracks, which is why it's so amusing when people oppose it so strongly. :)

My lovely fiancee has pre-ordered it for me as a birthday present. Can pick up an additional wheel for £6.99, so I'll be doing that when I order Battalion Wars and Zack and Wiki too (you can see I'm hoping for mucho birthday money! :p)

hm no i disagree, especially if you are implying that its just childhood memories.

load SMK up today and its as fun and enjoyable as it ever was. one of my mates still has a snes and SMK especially for this and a couple of years ago i had it running on my laptop for multiplayer at uni...everyone loves that game, now and then! (and if you don't, your a snaker!)

Looks like this is going to be another Nintendo supply balls up practically every online store going has run out of stock for launch day so can't imagine there are going to be many copies about on Friday.

Already got it on pre order so should be ok hopefully :p

Well.. 5 days to go.

Who's getting it or are you saving your money for Wii Fit at the end of the month :p

If the wii had a decent online system, lobbies etc and voice chat I would buy this on release day. It doesn't sadly and none of my real life friends have a wii or interested in owning one so split screen games would be boring.

Voice chat and the simple nature of other formats online has spoiled me to the point I wouldn't get much enjoyment out of playing this in a party online in silence.

No voice chat? That's shocking really. In this day and age a basic online feature like that surely can't be overlooked? If Nintendo really want to push their online fucntionality they really need to get basic features in. Puzzles me how they advertise that you can play with friends but you can't even chat to them? Joke really in my opinion!
